Praise BOINC all you like, but let's look at the facts.

1) SETI classic is currently bug free and fully operational while BOINC is not.

2) SETI classic software is FREE, which means, contrary to what some Einsteins will tell you, that you CAN get software that works FOR FREE.

3) I've never heard anyone say they were ready to give up the SETI project completly UNTIL coming to this forum and reading about the CHRONIC problems and frustrations caused by the BOINC software or server, or whatever other reason you are blaming it on this week.

4) TWO topics started about the problems getting WU's for BOINC, neither of which I started, indicating that I am neither the only person with a problem, nor am I the only "complainer"

The simple fact of the matter is that this bug laden software MIGHT be better in the future, but CURRENTLY is a big steaming pile which is turning users away from SETI, not bringing them in faster.

Lets look at the technical complexities of both.
S@H classic = Sputnik.
BOINC = Space Shuttle.

It's not surprising that BOINC has a few more "issues", because it's doing more. (CC and project apps) How well does S@H classic do other projects?

> 2) SETI classic software is FREE, which means, contrary to what some Einsteins
> will tell you, that you CAN get software that works FOR FREE.

No. The S@H classic software isn't free. It's development/distribution is/was paid for by sponsers. Same as BOINC.

> 3) I've never heard anyone say they were ready to give up the SETI project

I have. Many people feel this is a good excuse to stop running S@H. Nothing to do with the servers or software.

No, you aren't the only complainer. Simply one of the complainers who can't look at things logically.

Yes, the software does have some bugs. Yes, I feel it wasn't ready to leave beta yet. However, I wouldn't by any stretch of the imagination call it "laden" with bugs. As has already been mentioned, the software does "work". None of the existing bugs are game breakers.

Yes. Let's look at the facts shall we? Your 'fully operational' example spent something like 72 hours *down* over the weekend, and such downtimes are far from rare.

The remainder of your comments are equally 'factual'.

Thank you to the Boinc developers who have spent all of this time working on this project. Thank you to Chris and others like him who read and think logically and does not resort to foul language to get their point across. The bugs will be worked out in due time. Debugging a piece of software can take many many hours and can take months to work out every single bug.

It amazes me about all the complaints there are referring to the "software," While currently all the problems are stemming from server hardware program issues which have nothing to do with the client. Ignorance is like the clap around here, and all the big complainers are doing all the F******.

I to am upset that there is no work available.
I now have the Pirates@Home project added. But it doesn't have any work available either.

I think BOINC people might of jumped the gun on letting this out. If they can't keep up with the work load demands of the people that have signed up to use it. There is something wrong. I don't really think it is software related. But server related ?

If anything, is there other projects out there that my computer can be running.. If so post links to the sites. Not just names....

BrainSmashR:

If the software is bug ridden, why don't you enlighten the rest of us with your high and mighty insight into what the SETI@home scientists are obviously failing to see.

As Dogbytes says in the previous post...the issues are not with the software client or the analysis. Have a close look at the SETI@home client...still the good 'ol 3.08 under the new skin.

Spiderman:

You're right on one account...BOINC is intended to allow users to participate in multiple projects with one computer. However, no project is obligated to make sure that you can process units at all times. They'll hand out as much work as they can. If there is a surplus of CPU cycles, well that's great! You can put them to good use towards other projects.

Make the work units bigger. Take longer to process so less connetions.
Im not saying make it 200 hour units on a p4 3gig but slightly increase the work unit size for more processing.
Unless theres a problem with bandwidth.

Did we bring across all the Seti@home backend equipment ??
Shouldnt be this low on units?

Although 2.7mil in units already compared to 6mil for all of last project is scary. :)

If you go here the message I believe is quite clear.

Although the timeline is only an estimate, it says very clearly that S@H Classic will jump over to the use of Boinc.

Even during the most intensive Veta testing the daw for WU's was not what it turned out to be on announment week.
==========

Personally I stay away from the Veta Testing, although I will do some Beta Testing now & then... ;)

"Lets look at the technical complexities of both.
S@H classic = Sputnik.
BOINC = Space Shuttle. "

VERY poor example. How many Space Shuttles DISASTERS have we had since it's introduction?

"No. The S@H classic software isn't free. It's development/distribution is/was paid for by sponsers. Same as BOINC."

Well, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but that means the software is FREE to the end user.

"I have. Many people feel this is a good excuse to stop running S@H. Nothing to do with the servers or software."

Well, I won't call you a liar to your face, just ask you to provide some proof and ask you why an adult can't stop utilizing softtware if they want to. It's not crack and it's not physically addictive.

"None of the existing bugs are game breakers."

That's YOUR opinion. I droped BOINC in 24hours because it STOPPED my SETI WU processing in it's tracks. Effectivly "breaking" the game.

"Yes. Let's look at the facts shall we? Your 'fully operational' example spent something like 72 hours *down* over the weekend, and such downtimes are far from rare."

Mine WAS NOT down. In fact, I have not talked to ONE PERSON who was unable to get WU's this weekend with SETI classic. You are full of s**t on this one, buddy.

"While currently all the problems are stemming from server hardware program issues which have nothing to do with the client. "

In Louisiana, they say it's not the heat, but the humidity. But you know what, it's still hot as hell outside.....meaning I don't care what you blame the problem on, BOINC doesn't get the SETI job done.

"If the software is bug ridden, why don't you enlighten the rest of us with your high and mighty insight into what the SETI@home scientists are obviously failing to see."

SURE, if it's NOT broken, don't try to fix it. SETI classic is STILL working like a charm

"Someone got a gun pointing to your head making you run Boinc?"

LAF, if you bothered to read the entire topic you'd see I AM NO LONGER RUNNING THAT PIECE OF CRAP. SETI classic WORKS, plain and simple.

"Although the timeline is only an estimate, it says very clearly that S@H Classic will jump over to the use of Boinc"

I completely understand, I just hope I'm dead or someone works the bugs out before the change takes place, because as long as the problems exist, I'm not switching.

"It Seems that all this SUCK's Big time. I can not get new Wu's, it keeps deferring with project. NO FU..... WU's"

I know the feeling, buddy. Try SETI classic, IT WORKS

I just wish that the news link was updated more often... like whenever there is a problem!

At least then we would all know the reason for the current lack of work units, and maybe when it will be sorted out.

Just noticed a new message in Boinc:

2004-07-21 06:38:37 PROJECT IS DOWN

Looks like its no longer a problem of not enough work units. Looks like they've shut it down until they can fix the problem. Gotta love how they don't mention that on the main page. Not a problem for me, but for all the people who switch at the moment they won't know what's going on. Not complaining, just stating facts.
