|I have always been interested in space and believed that there just HAS to be life, intelligent life, elsewhere in this galaxy and vast universe.|
I read about SETI@Home, the now famous Classic SETI, in the newspaper in May of 1999. As soon as I got home from work, I fired up my old 486DX2-66 PC and installed the project. I crunched Classic SETI until I discovered BOINC in 2004.
I installed BOINC and have been BOINCing ever since on a multitude of different PCs. Throughout the years, I had bought new mother boards, CPUs, video cards, DIMMs, hard drives, cases, etc. in an attempt to keep up with current technologies and to crunch BOINC even faster. At one point, about a year ago, 2008, I ran BOINC on a laptop. I quit that, though, because the laptop just was not built for that kind of use.
For several months, I had been reading about users having i7 powered rigs. I started dreaming of having one myself. I was checking prices and availability on the different parts and pieces needed to build such a power house. Well, over the past several weeks I have been gathering those parts and pieces and 2 weeks ago, I made that dream a reality. I now have my own i7 powered rig.
Intel i7-860 2.80 GHz CPU
Corsair H50 CPU cooling system
Asus P7P55D-E Pro MoBo
Galaxy nVidia GeForce GT 430 PCI-E 1MB DDR3 RAM (CUDA Enabled)
Crucial 8GB PC3 1333MHz DDR3 RAM (Dual Channel)
Western Digital 500GB 3G SATA HDD x 2 = 1TB Storage
Case: Ultra Aluminus full tower
PSU: Thermaltake SP-850M 550W Smart M Series
Micro$oft Win7 Pro 64 bit
BOINC v7.2.42 (x64)
There is only 1 item that is not new, the case.
This rig is a far cry from the 486DX2-66 rig I started with in 1999.
UPDATE - Nov 07, 2010: Due to some problems, on my i7 PC, I had narrowed down to my video card, yesterday, I got a new one and installed it. All those problems have seemed to disappear.
UPDATE - Feb 18, 2011: The previous problems I was having with my i7 PC did not go away with the video card upgrade, mentioned above. They came back. I have upgraded my RAM and the OS (see specs above). I have seen no problems since the upgrade was made 4 days ago.
UPDATE - May 11, 2013: I am no longer running 2 rigs. The PC described above is my only cruncher.
UPDATE - May 06, 2014: Had to replace the PSU that finally died.
I am confidant that some day, one or more of us BOINCers is going to be the discoverers of that intelligent life I so believe is out there somewhere.
