... I looked through the services list and cannot find anything about automatic updates. :(

Can you believe this to reduce your Microsoft updates woes?...

End to surprise Windows 10 updates? New 'download and install now' option rolls out

As Microsoft promised in early April, Windows 10 is gaining a new option that gives users better control over when its twice-yearly major feature updates are installed.

That option is called 'Download and install now' and should help Windows 10 users avoid unintentionally accepting a feature update after using Windows Update to check for new patches...

Good luck!

I used this video to disable updates a few weeks ago and so far it's working. Hope it helps.

https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/6/18534687/microsoft-windows-10-linux-kernel-feature

Microsoft has surprised many in the Linux developer community in recent years. Surprises have included bringing things like the Bash shell to Windows, or native OpenSSH in Windows 10, and even including Ubuntu, SUSE Linux, and Fedora in the Windows Store. Microsoft is now going even further, with plans to ship a full Linux kernel directly in Windows 10.

“Beginning with Windows Insiders builds this Summer, we will include an in-house custom-built Linux kernel to underpin the newest version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL),” explains Microsoft program manager Jack Hammons. “The kernel itself will initially be based on version 4.19, the latest long-term stable release of Linux. The kernel will be rebased at the designation of new long-term stable releases to ensure that the WSL kernel always has the latest Linux goodness.”

Microsoft also announced Windows Terminal today, a new command line app for Windows. It’s designed to be the central location for access to environments like PowerShell, Cmd, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

This is a rather curious headline...

(Even for Microsoft!)

Despite Build 2019 Absence, Don't Worry About Windows

At Microsoft’s Build 2019 developer conference here in Seattle, there’s a word I heard far less than many expected: Windows...

Don't worry... Be happy! ;-)

Greetings,

Ok, I've been seeing this a lot lately, at least for the past few weeks. If I go to a site like TomsHardware and they have a video, it comes up all black with this message in the center and some weird looking icon, a white play button with a slash through it:
This video cannot be played because of a
technical error.
(Error Code: 102006)

Any clues as to what is causing this? It doesn't happen on all sites with videos, just some. YouTube videos are not affected with this. Could it be a piece of software in Windows 10 like... what was it called?... Adobe flashback... or something like that? Or perhaps a Java or Javascript piece of code? Something? The sites give no clues that I can see.

I was just over on TomsHardware site checking things and I found that not all videos on their site give this error message. Now I'm really confused... ;)

Have a great day! :)

Siran

[edit]
Well, using DuckDuckGo, I found something "close" to an explanation, JW Player Errors Reference:
CODE REASON Deprecated Error Message < 8.4.0 Displayed Message
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
102006 The XHR request failed with a status code Error loading playlist: () Sorry, the video player failed to load.
             outside of the 400 and 500 ranges

The displayed message does not match what I see displayed and XHR refers to: XMLHttpRequest.

Hope this helps. :) I'll keep looking... :)

Hi IntenseGuy,

Firefox, latest version.

I looked at the web page source trying to find what they use for videos. I'm not entirely sure, but I found what could be references to JW Player. Their source is much more complex than any I have seen or used. A lot of scripts. My website is simple by comparison.

I'm kinda thinkin' this is gettin' a bit off-topic. To be honest, I really don't watch that many videos on websites unless it is related to what I am there for. Since it was in the middle of the article that Martin linked, I was curious. But no longer.

Have a great day! :)

Yes, why do some (most?) commercial websites have such elaborate (sneaky?) obscure scripting?...

Video? What video??

I've looked there again and there is no video to be seen... Also running Firefox here.

Then again, I don't get to see most web adverts either ;-)

What add-ons do you run?
If a script blocker, did you allow the website that the video runs from, or the JWPlayer explictely?
I can't play JWPlayer either, even when whitelisting it in uMatrix and uBlock. I don't care much because when loading the site in Chrome I notice these videos tend to autoplay with their volume wide open. I hate those.

Hi Jord,

I only run 4 extensions:
* AdBlock Plus
* FaceBook Container
* Firefox Multi-Account containers
* minerBlock

That's all of them. :) I don't know what I did, but when I found out about the problem with Firefox and reinstalled it, videos no longer autoplay, not even YouTube which used to.

Have a great day! :)

Running the noScript plug-in here, but also with a Linux network gateway kindly blacklisting a lot of known advertiser sites...

Hence, I see no black box and definitely no error and nothing else for that silliness. There is merely an inter-paragraph bit of white space between those two paragraphs.

Message 1993342 - Posted: 10 May 2019, 18:12:06 UTC

Greetings,

Winblows 10 did it to me again!!! I had the Update Service disabled. I went to shut down both PCs to do some dust removal and do a mod to my Winblows machine. I clicked on the button to shut down and it gave me the options to "update and restart" or "update and shutdown". Oh great! I checked and the service was re-enabled! That's the second time that Winblows 10 has undone what I did in services concerning updates. I chose the shutdown.

The mod I did actually made the PC a bit more quiet. I pulled out my Dremel, removed my radiator and fans. I cut a slot in the top grid large enough to slide the pump through. I now have the radiator on the top of the grid, under the dust filter cover grid, and the fans underneath the grid. The fans are now blowing through the radiator instead of sucking like before.

I'm thinking of installing Linux Mint on the PC as a dual boot and work with it to see about getting Winblows stuff to run in Wine. If'n I can succeed in that, I will remove everything from my M.2 c : drive and install Linux Mint by itself. I have had it with Winblows and Micro$oft and them not following the settings we make. This is MY COMPUTER! It will run the way I WANT IT TO! Get over it Micro$oft!!! You do NOT OWN the world.

Have a great day! :)

Apparently you still haven't read the EULA:

By accepting this agreement or using the software, you agree to all of these terms, and consent to the transmission of certain information during activation and during your use of the software as per the privacy statement described in Section 3. If you do not accept and comply with these terms, you may not use the software or its features.

6. Updates. The software periodically checks for system and app updates, and downloads and installs them for you. You may obtain updates only from Microsoft or authorized sources, and Microsoft may need to update your system to provide you with those updates. By accepting this agreement, you agree to receive these types of automatic updates without any additional notice.

It may be your computer, but Windows is theirs and theirs to do with as they please. You may not interfere, as then you're in breach of contract.
Never trust free software, especially when it comes from Microsoft (or Facebook).

For your Linux experiment I would not recommend dual-booting. Best method is to install Linux to its own drive. SSD drives are cheap and most motherboards have an available open SATA connector. That way both Windows and Linux do not step on each other's toes with respect to who is controlling boot. Use the BIOS to control which drive to boot from.

LMAO!!! :D

That may be kinduva joke right now, but I would not put it past Micro$oft to figure out how to do just that. ;)

Hi Jord,

Then I will continue to BREACH THEIR CONTRACT!!! Their crap keeps breaking stuff on my computer. If they don't have the brains to figure out how to prevent stuff getting broke on OUR computers by their crappy crap, then I'll keep interfering... ;)

My computers are MY computers. I have no problem with my Linux computer, nothing gets broken there. Micro$oft keeps changing stuff on my Winblowhard computer. If I don't want their broken updates, I should have the choice not to get them at my own risk. I don't care WHAT their EULA says. IT'S MY COMPUTER!!! They can quit breaking stuff on it. :)

Have a great day! :)
