cloud? what cloud? there are literally dozens of free no registration implementations. and IIRC NOOBS installs a VNC server and viewer. |

VNC is a stand alone app, and very small at that. Hi Brent, Ok, I have TightVNC installed and now one needs to be a rocket scientist to use the application. I cannot get it to connect to my Pis. They reject the connection. What do you mean that it is stand-alone and very small. I have 10 different buttons to click. That doesn't seem small to me. Man, RDC was so much easier to use. No massive configuration. Maybe I have the "wrong" TightVNC? Have a great day! :) Siran [edit] I found a PDF instructions, it's old Win7 version but... From what I gather, I have to have a VNC server running on each Pi in order for the viewer to see them. The way it looks, I could go to my Pis and view my Windows machine. I'm going to experiment with some advice given earlier, I think from MarkJ, in RDC and If I can do it, I'm removing VNC from this PC. [/edit] [edit2] Experiment was a success. I used the terminal to stop and start the BOINC client. It worked. I have uninstalled VNC. I can do this through RDC. Woohoo! :) [/edit2] CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? cloud? what cloud? there are literally dozens of free no registration implementations. Hi Gary, I was looking at the wrong VNC. I was looking at RealVNC which requires a cloud for the Free and Professional versions and cloud or direct choice for Enterprise. Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Greetings, @ Gary, Brent, Tom and Mark: Thank you for your advising. Although the VNC thing did not work out for me, I still appreciate the advice. The command line options for the terminal will suffice. Thanks again! :) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Because there are many options, some new, some old, you need to be sure the server settings for security match the viewer options for security. If not connection refused. Also make sure you enabled VNC in the PI settings. (Raspberry Pi Configuration -> Interfaces) |

I just ordered a RP3+ since I have been reading this thread with interest. Want to play with and learn this new platform. Parts should be here Monday. Should be fun! Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

I have been thinking of one too. I have see Pi Vesa mount cases which would make it very portable if you ever want it to be. Just grab your monitor and it tags along. |

@VNC, I just looked at it seems RealVNC got rid of their older versions which don't use the cloud. Don't know if there is someplace out there to get the old versions or not. Glad I have my old versions installed already. Now to make sure the backups are good! <ed>More Pi crunching over on Einstein https://einsteinathome.org/content/parallella-raspberry-pi-fpga-all-stuff |

I wasn't thinking about portability or driving a monitor. It will probably reside on one of my entertainment equipment racks in the living room. I will run it headless. I did order it with this nice case with cooling fan. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BTHNW9W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

So your PI's are not connecting directly to the server? I don't see them on your computer listing. They are doing E@H work. They've been off for the last couple of weeks, just getting back into 24/7 mode now. I fried a USB charger which was powering 4 of them. I thought I might have been pushing it a bit too much running 4 x Pi3B+ when its 30 degrees :-) Its a pity nobody has come up with a suitable power supply for running multiple Rpi demanding 2 - 2.5 amps on each connection. Its a pity nobody has come up with a suitable power supply for running multiple Rpi demanding 2 - 2.5 amps on each connection. Some assembly required there. I meant something ready to go, like a USB charger. You would need to do some wiring and come up with a case for it. On the plus side at 14 amps output it could run 7 Rpi off a single power supply. I did order it with this nice case with cooling fan. That's basically a pirated Pimoroni Pibow case. |

I did order it with this nice case with cooling fan. Greetings, I compared the 2 cases in close-up views and they do not look the same. They look similar, but not exactly the same. The one he ordered looks more like my cases except that mine are completely open between the top and bottom covers. I would not say that his is pirated. You have to figure, all the cases made for the Pis are going to resemble each other in some fashion or other. Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? Yes, they are not identical but in my opinion the manufacturer of that case went too far when borrowing ideas from others. |

Yes, they are not identical but in my opinion the manufacturer of that case went too far when borrowing ideas from others. One has to understand the Pi pholosophy, FLOSS applies to hardware too. It wouldn't surprise me to find one or the other of those put their design files online if not their 3D print files or someone else even did so and they both took that design as a start. |

Okay I have added 4 of the older Pi3B's to Seti, Lets see how long they take. Apparently 20 hours. I knew there was a reason why I run Einstein BRP4 work on them normally :-) BOINC blog |
