We are a Federal Republic. With 51 Internal Governments, with many different laws, and interpretations of laws.
For example: Some actions are crimes in some States, but not in others. Some States have a Death Penalty, others do not. If one commits a crime in one State, and is captured in another. He must face Extradition (as between Countries).
The closest example I can give is this: Think of the USA as the European Union - Light.
Of course, not exactly. But perhaps it will give you some understanding.

Well, more precisely, 50 Constitutional Republics (the States) and the Federal Constitutional Republic (which also has exclusive jurisdiction over the capital district (Washington D.C.)).

50 + 1... 51 different Governments, internally. Externally, only the Federal Government has much relevance.

Also, eariler, Clyde called the USA the 'EU-lite'... I would say it is the other way around, especially since the USA existed well before the EU.

The EU is the 'USA-lite'. They are not anywhere near as far down the path as the USA is... And they SHOULD take warning lest what happened to US happens to THEM.
