I wish us all strength and skill as we struggle with intolerance in ourselves and in our society. It has been my personal experience that this struggle is not something one "gets beyond". Personally, I am better at it than I used to be, but I am not "beyond" it. If I deemed myself to be "beyond" untrue, unjust, unfair and unkind beliefs, I think I would be at risk for not recognizing intolerance in myself. So true. So much of what is intolerance may flow from ignorance. An example. You see a group of teenagers walking down the street. If they are like you, you can pretty rapidly judge if they are a threat to you in some way. If they aren't like you, from a different culture, you have no reference to make the judgement, however as they aren't doing the things you expect, you place them in the possible threat category. If you then end up talking to them, if you have them in the threat category you will be more hostile to them than if you have them in the no threat category. You have just engaged in discrimination. It is next to impossible to stop this, until you recognize it. Even then you won't be able to 100% suppress it. Until you learn that culture, so you can read it, there will always be a percent or so. |

I am happy to see a frank discussion of race on the boards. As a citizen of the USA, I think most of my fellow citizens would agree that our country has come a long way in this area, but that we still have a very long way to go. Angela, I graduated HS in 71 and we had one Afircan- Ameraican out of a total of 2000 students for the whole High school. My first interactions with any other race was when I enlisted in the USAF in 1972. And you know what. I learned that regardless of skin color we all have a lot in common. And I will admit my parents were less than stellar in being tolerant. But they did learn to be. They had no choice, As three of my Grandkids are bi-racial. Yes Ameraica has a long way to go when it comes to ending Racism. But Im hoping my grandkids generation will get there. [/quote] Old James |

Just read an article on the BBC site that said that whites will be just under 50% of the high/grade school population in the US of A. Once the USA goes darker it will only be a matter of time before it gets dark in Canada to. The US won't have jobs for all the people so they will try Canada. |

Although to be fair, the political wing of Fox News aka The Tea Party are blatantly racist. I think you over estimate the numbers rushing to push the red X Clyde. I do find it amusing that you make these speeches about how offensive you find some posts, yet are completely oblivious to how offensive your posts have been on many occasions. (this being one of them) Luckily the more tolerant left wing posters such as myself don't need to be told not to go around red Xing posts we don't agree with, because left wing people believe in things like your right to express your opinion no matter how unpleasant it is. People need to stop taking offence for the sake of being outraged FFS. You can't call a person this that or the other...GET A LIFE PEOPLE is my answer to all this racism nonsense. All humans are racist to one degree or another, its a simple fact, get over it. Does this mean we should treat different groups differently, absolutely not, but lets just accept the inherent failings of man as a species and move on for christs sake. As far as I am concerned we are all HUMAN and then your nationality should be strictly dictated by the your nation of birth (assuming your parents were in the country legally and not committing a crime). Ban Religion, who needs an outdated iron age sky demon myth, and then the real escuses for war come to the for and are thus easier to deal with and perhaps prevent (highly unlikely) I have seen real depravity in this world, I have seen things that I hope 10 generations never get to see, but as a realist I know these events will continue, and the reason is because people take offense at the slightest thing. I have been the "victim" of racism and I am white, although as a 6ft 4" 256Ib ex Para it is few and far between and usually when I am here in England and not some third world crap hole where people usually have a better understanding of mutual respect. Do I take offence...no, because I understand that we are all racists and all humans, when looking to insult or belittle another will always use the grossest of insults...THE KEY IS TO NOT RESPOND I was called a bastard only a few days ago by some donkey who can't drive..I pointed out that my parents were married when I was born..however i then confused the idiot by stating I was not aware of who they were married too at the time!! :) |

I was called a bastard only a few days ago by some donkey who can't drive..I pointed out that my parents were married when I was born..however i then confused the idiot by stating I was not aware of who they were married too at the time!! :) Whiteness? Racism? Personally, I think those of other races & colours should just stand back & watch the White Race destroy themselves. I'll lay odds that all the White people on this project have personally witnessed either from a white individual or group, racism/hatred against their own. There are several other threads on-going where this can be clearly seen even though they are about specific topics. The poster which I've quoted above mentioned journalists & Journalism in one of those threads. The Vitriol & hatred within that industry has not changed in over 40 years. When I left school until I reached 18, I worked for 2. The London Evening News especially with Lord Arran & his Wednesday column was hilarious as the vitriol against that man was plain to see in all departments - he was never sober enough to write that column. I followed that job by moving round the corner to the Bouverie Street HQ of The Sun(years before their move to Canary Wharf). Was I glad when I hit 18 & left losing half a weeks wages but I didn't care. The quote above brought those memories back along with this which still makes me chuckle today: For years one of my sisters called me that whenever we met at home. It always had me wondering as I have no knowledge as to why. It all came to an end at my fathers funeral 9 years ago. Entering my fathers house, in front of her 2 daughters, she said it again. My response was to laugh, then stated the following: "I find that strange coming from you as you dropped 2 before you married" After the service, her daughters asked me why doesn't their mother like me - I replied "give me a call when you find out" & told them both that she has to be 5 cans short of a 6 pack for holding a grudge for over 40 years. No matter what race or colour one is, the dangers are not those from without but from within. Nice world we live in, isn't it! |

That's all well and good if racism is restricted to name calling. However, the black people have a whole deck of cards stacked against them through racism. So there really isn't an equivalence when it comes to victims of racism who are black compared to those who are white. Reality Internet Personality |

BBC News I could've tried asking for a white taxi driver when i lived in Birmingham, but i'd end up waiting months for them to find one. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

Whether or not the current UK legislation is what the general public actually want is quite another matter altogether. There are very powerful lobby groups out there. I make no further comment. So the purpose of publicizing that link was? |

Well as UK isn't Canada, the thread topic, all I can think of is to stir the pot or show how the colonies learned their lesson well from the mother country. |
