This is interesting:

Interesting, yes, but I have no desire to sign up for clinical trials!

Along a similar vein, I've read that anti-aging research involving laboratory animals has a long track record of showing that animals just this side of starving live longer, healthier lives. (Probably not happier lives though...)

Until medical science can give me something to trigger the beneficial bodily effects of starvation in an easy to swallow pill form (preferably mashed into my ice cream), I will simply have to settle for a life span of average duration... should I be so lucky!

Well, how about this?

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/05/science/young-blood-may-hold-key-to-reversing-aging.html?_r=0

If it truly works, and I think it will, metabolism would revert to a younger age, as well. This news excites me more than anything I've read (biologically) in a long time.

Finished hijacking thread.

CC

And vampires are so "in" now... what's not to like?!!!

I do not see this as a hijack. This is a thread for people who want to improve their health and you have shown us some directions the scientific community is exploring with that very objective in mind. Your articles seem very "on topic" to me.

Although the title involves weight loss, I did state at the beginning that this is a thread for improving health, in general. If someone wanted to try to quit smoking, for example, that person would be welcome to come here and discuss that process.

Worked out today. Spent 45 Min. on the treadmill; plus, a 10 Min cool down. (Breakdown of two sessions at 22.5 Min. each with two 5 Min. cool down periods.)

I also got weighed... Two pounds gained... NOT good; but, since I was able to work up to 45 Min. workouts, that should correct itself next Monday's weigh-in. I hope to lose 5 lbs. between now and Monday. Wish me luck.

Quite possibly so, as muscle mass weighs more than fat.
But daily weigh-ins can also be misleading, which is why I only get on the scale once a week (usually Monday morning).

Yes, but, I'm not weighing everyday... Just once a week. This week; however, I missed weighing in on Monday, I skipped working out Tuesday, so, I weighed in yesterday.

As Uli suggests; it could be muscle mass, however, that doesn't help me when I need to "lose the most weight between April 1, 2014 and June 30, 2014", to win the contest at Fitness 19 "for a trip for two to Hawaii." Therefore; my goal remains to lose another five pounds before this coming Monday, to put me back on track.

That seems a lot. Don't put yourself in danger because of a competition. Getting fit is a long haul.

Five pounds in a week is so much!!! No contest is worth jeopardizing your health by crash dieting, Scott.

I agree. And whilst muscle does weigh more than fat, it also boosts metabolic rate significantly. Crash dieting doesn't. The body thinks the planet has plunged into a widespread global famine... it then does it's utmost to conserve it's energy supplies by lowering your metabolism... then, as soon as the global famine ends (a whiff of a jellybaby for instance) it keeps the metabolic rate pegged at a much lower rate "just in case" the jellybaby famine returns the following week. :) What you've hit is the extremely annoying "plateau" where the scales say "nothing to see here" but the tape measure says otherwise :) Don't let it fool you AND DON'T LET IT DEPRESS YOU EITHER :) You're doing brilliantly.

Yes Scott, you and Vic have both lost the most weight so far. You ARE doing brilliantly!!!

Is anyone besides me feeling hungry right now? I hope Eric gets home from work before I start gnawing on the furniture!!!

I ran some errands this evening and in doing so I parked the car far far far away from my destinations. It was a win-win for me. I drive poorly and I park worse, so the further away I am from potential victims the better... and on top of that I got in a little bit of the dreaded e-word (exercise).

Been starving to death all morning even though I had 2minute noodles at 2am and a homemade hamburger at 3am. Its just passed midday and I made a bowl of sweet potato soup for lunch. Tossing up weather to ride to Aldies or walk. The roads are still a bit wet.

I fell off the wagon... and when I fell, I landed in a ditch and the wagon rolled back and forth over me a few times.

Breakfast was totally sensible... lunch even more so. Then Eric got home super late and I was famished by the time we sat down to dinner. My impulse control was gone, gone, gone, gone, gone, gone, gone... gone with the age of the Mastodon. I drank waaaaaaaaaaaay too much wine, nibbled on some high salt/high calorie appetizers and ate waaaaaay too much dinner.

Sigh...

I shall try to scratch and claw my way back up onto the wagon tomorrow.

What sort of apps did you have? What was for supper?

The apps were cracker nuts from the Philippines and a Japanese rice cracker/wasabi pea mix. Very high salt!

Dinner was individual chicken pot pies from a local bakery near us and oven roasted cauliflower. (I didn't eat the soggy bottom and side crusts of my pie, so at least I saved a few calories there.) The adobo flavored cracker nuts and half a bottle of wine were my undoing tonight.

Other than the salt, the apps sound pretty ok, but easy to get carried away with...
