On 1 January, 2005, telemarketers will gain access to all cellphone numbers in the USA. They will be able to use up people's cellphone minutes or dollars without limit. There is a website for taking our cellphones off the list and making it illegal for telemarketers to call. The deadline for registering our number on the National Do Not Call List is 15 December, 2004. The website is http://www.donotcall.gov This information came to me by way of a trusted friend. The website looks legitimate, and I have registered my cellphone and that of my wife's. Just because I trust the information does not mean you will. I would suggest checking it out and doing what you think is in your best interest. Robert |

I've already signed up. I should also point out that there was nothing preventing a user from signing his/her cell number up previously. THe reason they're asking for permission is probably to mask the Caller ID which is built into the cells. |

The site IS legit, I have used it in the past to register my home phone numbers, worked GREAT! I have used it again for my cell numbers. |

Oddly enough, VZ has let a lot of landline numbers slip, but not a cell number. |

The very first day that the national Do Not Call List opened for registration, I put both my LL and wireless numbers on the list. The only calls I've gotten were before the election from political action groups (the bastards) which are excempt from the regulations along with charitable groups. I've got friends in Britian that say they need the same thing there as they are flooded with telemarketing calls almost daily. My recommendation how to handle these calls are two fold depending on your mood and time. The best is to string them along, take up THEIR time, then when they think that they've sunk the hook, tell them to take your number off their list and f**k off. The second tactic is to talk to the other party about sex and what you'd like to do to them (regardsless of their sex) in the most graphic and kinky fashion. That works quite well, they never call back. Account frozen... |

Just to set the record straight, the story about the telemarketers getting our cell phone numbers is mostly a myth. You can read the exact details here... http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/c/celldirectory.htm The truth is that a directory listing of cell phones is being considered, but there is no definite date set, and it is being proposed only for directory assistance, not to be in print or online. As for the Do Not Call database, there is no blackout date for registering a number with them, so for the moment there is absolutely nothing to worry about it. You can of course register your number preempitively, free of charge, and avoid any future decisions to make your numbers available. But there is no reliable source to suggest that there is a definite date for telemarkets gaining access to our numbers. |

It's very irritating to have five or six competing theories on what's what. Depending on the state you're in, it could be that the tele-bums have the right or might not... The only [i]sure</I> way to leave cell numbers alone is to harass a senator and register on the list. Maybe if you can frame telemarketing as a form of terrorism, then I have a Senior Senator you'll want to talk to. |

As fate would have it, the source of 90% of my telemarketing calls are a 10-minute's walk from my house. If I were a really vindictive SoB, I'd cut down their telco lines. |

Free speech ends at the doorstep. I have a right to privacy. Within the residence they are trying to use my bought-and-paid-for resources for their advertising without any sort of compensation and without allowing me to make the decision to accept the package deal. That's the difference between telemarketing and TV advertising, and that's what the politicians are dancing around. |

I remember a point where I was getting daily multiple calls from a telemarketing co in North Dakota that wouldnt take No -leave me alone for an answer (and already being on the do not call list) until I contacted the ND attorney generals office. Funny how the AGO and Co were in the same zipcode just a few blocks distance from each other. ========= I got so pissed off one time at a telemarketer that repeatedly called 3 or 4 times a day I threatened to come to their office and blow the freaking place up if they ever called again. I could have probably got in trouble over that but they haven't called since anyway ... |
