My blood type as said by My Dog Tags is O-, My relatives are O+, doesn't mean what they think of course, they think anyone related to them has to have the same blood type, not true of course. I'm considered a universal donor...

My blood is A+, but no one wants it. For one thing, I don't have enough to spare. For another, I have too much stuff in it: meds, tuberculi... (no HIV, I had that checked after getting four units in the hospital last year).

You do realize that if a hospital trip is planned in advance, that you can donate your own blood to be stored for said surgery?... My local hospitals allow this, I think most if not all hospitals in the country do to.

Yes, I know that, but this wasn't planned. I was incredibly anemic and they had to refill me fast. My hemoglobin was about 7.8.

(The second unit, not the first, gave me an allergic reaction (which also happened to my mother once). For the third and fourth, they gave me something to prevent that.)

We can donate blood from 17 onwards, on my 17th birthday my mother (who is a great believer) marched me down to the village hall where the clinic was, by coincidence on the same day. That was an interesting birthday present.

sorry to hear you had an ER visit.
they actually gave you way to much blood. first off did they know if you were bleeding. can't store Iron. That seems a bit hasty to drop any blood in you unitl they figure out why you are low. We have patients that walk around all day at 7.8 and don't blink an eye. we prefer for them to be at 11 or more but even with modern medicine and shots they still go very anemic

the allergic reaction could have been the unit partially hemolyzing which causes an allergic like reaction. Or the person that donated the blood could have eaten something prior that you are allergic to prior to the donation.

at a hgb of 7.8 they essentially doubled your hgb to around 15 or 16 which is is on the high end of normal. In treating anemia the Physician is supposed to attempt to get your body to start making more blood. Obviously, if you are bleeding or are shot that isn't going to happen. I hate second guessing a physician but they seem to have done an excessive amount of transfusing.

While I was on Chemo’ they were talking about nipping out my spleen to
help me with too much bleeding. Is that done in the Boston States as well?
(Boston States is an old way of talking about the US of A in my home province
of Nova Scotia.)

With all my family and friends who've gone through chemo, that's the first I've heard of it.

I hate second guessing a physician but they seem to have done an excessive amount of transfusing.

The blood was missing due to a hematoma following laser lithotripsy of the kidney a few weeks earlier. I went to the ER with the anemia manifesting itself in my mind as not breathing adequately (I'm guessing my body felt it wasn't getting enough oxygen due to insufficient iron to carry it and told my brain to breathe more). Even though the stupid finger clamp said my O2 was about 95%, I asked for oxygen and stayed on it for three days. They gave me two units of blood, then waited a while and kept checking the numbers before giving me two more. At some point after that, pressure from the hematoma caused a bleeding ulcer of the colon, which they had to go in and treat with the scope (no other problems found). After that, my numbers gradually rose. On the fifth day, I begged to be allowed to go to my grandmother's memorial service the next morning; they said I could if one last check showed I was up to 10 -- I was.

Granted, my hgb had been running a bit low the previous couple of times it was checked, at my employer's annual wellness screenings. My doctor already had me on iron supplements and doubled them for a while after this. I'm about normal now, but still taking the iron.
