Oh yeah, looks real well fed, out here this area doesn't have any fruit bats, just the Insect eating type that come out around sunset, quite a sight really.

Magoo came by for kibble the night before last and Marcel and Magoo both came by for kibble and grapes last night. It is late in the year for bachelor brothers to still be visiting us. I assume this means that no dominant female has yet fully claimed our backyard.

While we were away, our house/cat sitter said that she twice saw a mama raccoon come in with 5 kits, but Eric and I have not seen this raccoon family since we have been home. It is possible that the mama raccoon is Donna, but having 5 surviving kits would be quite an accomplishment for a very young raccoon mama. I think a large litter size lessens the chances of our mystery mama being Donna.

I do hope this raccoon family stops by soon so that I can try and figure out by body size, by scars and bite marks and primarily by behavioral characteristics just who this mystery mama raccoon really is. A ready rail climber would be Izzy, as she is the most accomplished rail dancer we have ever had. A spare bedroom window beggar, who also tolerates my presence outside, would be Donna. A raccoon with a broken front paw would be Gigi. Our cat sitter didn't mention anything about the mama raccoon limping, so the mystery mama is probably not Gigi. Also, sadly, Gigi's disability would have lessened her chances of living another year. She would have climbing and fighting disadvantages that, in all probability, would catch up with her over time. (Mother Nature is a harsh mistress.) Anyway... a shy and skittish raccoon, one who runs if I open a window and one who absolutely does not tolerate my presence outside, would probably be a new raccoon for us - a raccoon who did not spend her childhood (kithood???) in our backyard.

I know Chris, who named Izzy, and Uli, who named Donna, are really hoping to be grandparents, but the smart money is probably on a new mama raccoon. Time will tell.

In the meanwhile, Purvis has a food rival that I am calling Little Stink. Purvis and Little Stink are clearly not related! They do not like one another one bit and I have to scatter their food widely to discourage spraying. Last night I also had a very large opossum at the back door. Unfortunately I startled him and he ran right under the deck. I did not see him again before I went to bed. Four beautiful ravens now regularly visit our backyard during the day. Since we cannot tell ravens apart, Eric has always called them Edgar, Allan and Poe, but since we now have a regular fourth visitor Eric and I both decided that it was only logical to call that one Usher.

I've often wondered what the American equivalent of "Stuff that Gibbon" might be. It looks as if Raccoon Tossing is a good candidate.
