Nice looking car. How come the fuel consumption is that high with a 2 litre manual? RON stands for 'research octane number'. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Ford? Yeah. I own one. '98 Taurus. I bought last year it for my #2 son who now drives it to college. Dull, boring, 6 cylinder, white fleet vehicle I picked up cheap in a State government surplus property auction. Most kids would bitch and moan about being stuck with such an old heap, but everything works, we got it all cleaned up, and my kid loves it. Besides, there was no way in Hell I was going to let a teenager anywhere near my '06 Charger with a 5.7L Hemi!! Join the PACK! |

So far, I have not owned a car made in detroit. First car that I drove was a 59 Willys (but I could borrow the 69 International Harverster Travel All, 67 Toyota Corolla, 74 Civic, or 76 Civic if I needed to). Second car was that 74 Civic. Third car was a 1988 Civic wagon. Fourth car is a 1999 Outback. The 76 Civic had an engine that was a bit too clever. In order to meet emissions standards, they had a 3 barrel carburetor, one barrel of which was about the diameter of a mechanical pencil, and one barrel only opened when your foot was pretty much on the floor. It did get good gas mileage because it did not have to use any pollution control in the exhaust stream - those put back pressure on the engine and cause it to work harder... BOINC WIKI |

Nice looking car. How come the fuel consumption is that high with a 2 litre manual? Also a U.S. gallon is about 4 litres while an Imperial gallon is about 4.5 litres (I welcome the day when everyone uses the metric system). ;) Cheers. |

Nice looking car. How come the fuel consumption is that high with a 2 litre manual? Except you have to note that the Litre is not an SI unit. The unit of volume is the cubic metre. |

Except you have to note that the Litre is not an SI unit. The unit of volume is the cubic metre. In that case my car does 14100 kilometres per cubic metre. So American petrol is only 87 octane, no wonder you need cars with such big engines. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

Here's the latest prices for the Barstow CA area of the US: Gas prices for Unleaded(87) range from $3.679 to $4.399, Mid/Plus(89) goes from $3.799 to $4.499, Premium(91) goes from $3.809 to $4.139 a gallon(not all stations have reported in on Premium), Diesel goes from $3.999 to $4.599 a gallon, Being the area is a major truck stop doesn’t hurt I guess. Now If only the area had more water… The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Petrol at my local Shell (Regular Unleaded, 95 RON) is £1.34.9 per litre today, that works out at $8.04 per US Gallon. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

LOL... Anybody else seen the new Ford Taurus commercials? I don't seem to find them on youtube just yet, but I am sure they will be uploaded there soon. I've seen a couple different ones. Both show a supposedly stock Taurus being flogged around a race track, four wheel drifting, tires smoking, with the driver engaging in humorous banter with the bedazzled passenger. What a hoot. And pretty impressive if that really is a stock Taurus. EDIT... Try this link from Ford's own website... Not your daddy's Taurus. NASCAR's Carl Edwards is the driver. Have you taken your car to the shop every 2000 miles for major repairs lately? #resist |

So American petrol is only 87 octane, no wonder you need cars with such big engines. Er um, the 3-1/2 ltr engine that most Brits know about, the Rover 3.5, was actually a Buick 215. But it did take the Brits to recognise it was a good engine and to get it to work properly. |

What about the 3.5 litre V8 from the Lotus Esprit, 350 bhp, cracking engine. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

What about the 3.5 litre V8 from the Lotus Esprit, 350 bhp, cracking engine. Good engine but a bit specialised. How many have been built compared to the Rover lump. I have heard that if the restrictions are taken off that Lotus 3.5, the turbo version can reach 800bhp. The renault gearbox cannot take it though, probably cannot even take 500. |

How about a 3 liter (2.89 actual) that produces 425 HP on American gas. Oh and if I drive modestly I get about 20-22 mpg. Now if I choose to light up the rubber expect as low as 7 mpg. By the way my last Ford was a F-250, Crew Cab LWB Diesel. |

I'd expect many Esprits have had replacement or custom gearboxes fitted. That old 25 gearbox was a mistake from day 1. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

Kinda explains why I am driving a -'90 vintage 2.5l Olds Ciera. The 2.5 iron dukes never die. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |
