replaced a 750W power supply with a 1200W power supply so I could drop in a second GTX295 that I had lying around. I did this so that I would have some head room with the power supply as last time I tried this with this computer without replacing the p/s, the machine started rebooting every 5 minutes or so ... nothing else major at this stage but am thinking of giving the others a spring clean on the inside ... |

..., removed extra graphic cards, to save power, decloked those, which remained, declocked one of the rigs also. |

I replaced a 600W power supply with a 800W, and added a GTX470.. I hope that ps can handle the GTX. |

Nothing to do with Seti being off, I run backup projects all the time.....BUT I am replacing my computer desk and going to, for the first time, organize the cables and systems. (two desktops and a server). Through the years I have just added each piece as it came along, so there are cables that go nowhere and general junk everywhere. As I type this I am having power hits......bought two new UPS's yesterday but they are still in the car. Yesterday I powered off the Vista computer and it would not reboot.....another project. I am typing this from a laptop and will have to reset the router before I can transmit this. I really do love living in the country. Well my old 80GB SATA I died on my 2 weeks ago, so went to Newegg and bought me 2 500GB HD502HJ. They are single platter drives from Samsung. I have them in Raid0, and its more than enough for what I currently have. Now I have enough space to put some VM's and finally I can install my Steam games :) I got them for $55 for each drive so its a decent price for them. Been running other projects. But I have come home to find my UPS beeping constantly and power cut to my machine. Do you think it's an overload condition? |

I've been wrestling with my gateway server (not Gateway the company, but an internet gateway) that's been suffering from random reboots. The STOP errors indicated that a driver was at fault, but it didn't know which one. So a fresh load of Server 2003 Advanced with fresh drivers was in order, but didn't solve the problem. The next round of STOP errors reported that a race condition was happening due to my teaming of two Intel NICs. So I broke the team and disabled one of the adapters. No sooner than an hour later it randomly restarted again. The next day I found a new STOP error suggesting that I have a faulty Intel Xeon processor, or that it is overheating. I'll have to check for bulging capacitors, but in the meantime I've already started decommisioning the machine and have replaced it with a more traditional router from Cisco. Fun times with the Cisco router have left me trying to get port-fowarding to my web server to work propertly, which seems to have somehow started working overnight while I slept as I can get to my websites again. Now if only I can get the VPN working, I'll be relatively happy. So it seems that SETI is not the only one having server issues as of late. Unfortunately, I don't have the same passionate mass of users to donate funds to replace my dual Xeon machine. So it's back to the dual Pentium III 1.4GHz machine for now. This also means that my file transfer throughput is going to suffer like the last time this server was my file server. And I still have to find time to upgrade the accounting software for one of the companies that I contract for. I want to convince them to buy the same model router since it supports VPN tunneling, which can be very useful for me in remotely managing things from my own home network. Fun times. |

I see a lot of folks moving into the AMD Phenom X6 1055T, I also have this processor its quite fast, and it can overclock easily! Great cpu and at a cheap reasonable price :) Can't beat 6 cores for $180.. Any program is only as good as it is useful. -Linus Torvalds |

Nothing too crazy here, just some basic upgrades and parts swapping. New case for the power rig, as the mid-tower wasn't enough to hold 3x GTX460's properly (PSU had to stay outside the case). Also bought a couple 640GB WD Black's in 6GB/s to replace the 1TB 3GB/s drives. Moved all 3 1TB drives into the big rig with it's fresh HAF X 942 case, and did some file reorganization. Switched from ASUS SmartDoctor to MSI Afterburner, as it's interface is MUCH better for OC'ing the GTX's. Proyecto Unity: You should be fine with 800W for a single GTX470. I'm running 3x GTX460's with significant overclocking (890MHz compared to 675MHz stock) and a Core i7-950 on a single 950W PSU. I'm not sure how close to max I'm running on the PSU, but I know voltages are rock steady. |

I found out that Primegrid has a new ATI sieving app for PPS. It works great and I'm happily crunching away on that. I've also gotten 5 silver badges over there and a ruby one at WCG. I did go nuts 2 weeks ago. I popped all my keys off my keyboard and cleaned the nasties out from under them. you wouldnt believe the garbage that actually gets stuck under a keyboard over 5 years In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. just and FYI for those upgrading. I have had some HD issues in the last year with Western Digital. I have lost 2 Velociraptors(300G,10,000rpm), 1 Caviar Green (2TB, 5400rpm) 1 Cavier Green(1TB,5400rpm) and 1 Cavier Black (1TB,7200rpm). So it would seem that their whole drive line in SATA is horrible. Just trying to make it so you guys don't have the issues I have had. I have had Seagate and Fujitsu drives and not a one of them failed on me ever. Western Digital support hasn't even said sorry to me once. The last HD I lost took all my music that I had ripped with it. 500G lost and the drive doesn't spin up with any method that I have tried (even the freezer method). No way to get the data off the drive. I don't want to take the drives apart and ruin the warranty either or I could fix it that way. |

Interesting. I've got 5 WD drives (2x 640GB Blacks, 1x each 1TB Black/Green/Blue) across 2 machines and, knock on wood, haven't had a problem yet. The 1TB drives are coming up on 2 years old now. |
