if no new work is sent out the work load will get lighter as no new work comes in from the faster machines and the new servers will not be hit with the returning wu,s because there will be none for a few hours after start up and the slow machines like mine can have the covers taken off and dust cleaned off

I'm with the other guys here and would suggest allowing uploads, reporting and if it can cope assimilate/purge. No new work and try and clear the millions of wu out in the field. Once new machines are available you can look at creating work.

At this point, we are discussing what we will do between now and when the new servers are on line. Work wise, just stay down. Perhaps leave an upload server running and allow work to be reported only through the scheduler. Don't give anything out. The lesser a chance you have on crashing spectacularly again, the better... ____________ Jord - BOINC FAQ Service - BOINC User Wiki Real is just a matter of perception.

At this point, we are discussing what we will do between now and when the new servers are on line. I think this is very good advise. I agree with the general sentiment in this thread. that, it's best for the Scientists at SETI@home, to take whatever time they need, to safely, do what they they think, is in the best interests of Science. Swimming up stream a bit, perhaps this is a chance to learn something. Cut back on wuproduction as far as you can such that the 'system' doesn't crash. I realize there are many variables, but without getting into the weeds just try to see what works on a reduced scale. It will help understand things as they are enabled more fully later, I bet.

Is the load really the problem ? I mean, recently with all the hiccups the load has to have gone down, but still the hardware is crashing randomly.

thanks for the update i am curious tho Tod Hebert and the rest of the GPU users group has sent Eric and Jeff multiple messages starting on oct 8th about

I like Jord's suggestion. This way everyone can upload and report their work, and the backlog will begin to clear, ready for a fresh start. Steve ____________ Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website

thanks for the update i am curious tho Tod Hebert and the rest of the GPU users group has sent Eric and Jeff multiple messages starting on oct 8th about Maybe there was some unacceptable conditions tied to that (what seems to be) a very generous offer. I see no other reason why they should have ignored it.... ____________ /The grumpy old Swede. "I'm so old, that 98% of all trees in the forest, are younger than I am"

thanks for the update i am curious tho Tod Hebert and the rest of the GPU users group has sent Eric and Jeff multiple messages starting on oct 8th about Typical They only tell US what they want WHEN they want only need to know And if the don't like what we say They censure us Welcome to the club ____________

no there were no conditions on it except maybe naming it we just never got any responce we asked them what they wanted plain and simple I see what you write... A server of a better class than Oscar isn't something you say no to, if it is given to you for free, and without conditions.... So, still I see no other reason why they should have ignored it but for some unacceptable conditions tied to the offer. That, or the less likely reason that both Jeffs and Erics PM system is broken. ____________ /The grumpy old Swede. "I'm so old, that 98% of all trees in the forest, are younger than I am"

we have had an indirect reply now via "he who cannot be named" and they are waiting till the new servers are up and running first

Could someone bring up Beta with the same stipulations as production? (I.E. no new work, upload and reporting only...) There are some of us (me, for one) that have 85± WU that we'd (or at least, I'd) like to upload and report...

As some have taken a dislike to my posts I will make this post as my last comment on this subject.
