I'm with the other guys here and would suggest allowing uploads, reporting and if it can cope assimilate/purge. No new work and try and clear the millions of wu out in the field. Once new machines are available you can look at creating work.

Thanks for the update.

At this point, we are discussing what we will do between now and when the new servers are on line.

Work wise, just stay down. Perhaps leave an upload server running and allow work to be reported only through the scheduler. Don't give anything out. The lesser a chance you have on crashing spectacularly again, the better...

Take the whole system down until you have installed and thoroughly tested the new servers. If that takes a month or two really doesn't matter. It must be extremely time consuming and not beneficial to the science, just trying to keep the system up, when it is this unstable and unreliable.

It's much better if you spend that time doing some science work, instead of baby sitting unstable machines.

I think this is very good advise.
I agree with the general sentiment in this thread.
that, it's best for the Scientists at SETI@home,
to take whatever time they need,
to safely, do what they they think,
is in the best interests of Science.

Best Wishes

Swimming up stream a bit, perhaps this is a chance to learn something. Cut back on wuproduction as far as you can such that the 'system' doesn't crash. I realize there are many variables, but without getting into the weeds just try to see what works on a reduced scale. It will help understand things as they are enabled more fully later, I bet.

Is the load really the problem ? I mean, recently with all the hiccups the load has to have gone down, but still the hardware is crashing randomly.

thanks for the update i am curious tho Tod Hebert and the rest of the GPU users group has sent Eric and Jeff multiple messages starting on oct 8th about
DONATING a FULL OSCAR class Server (actuallu I think some of are specs were better) and never even got a responcei was a little surprised that a 10-15k
server donation would have been ignored even if not used for the main it could have definately had a purpose

I like Jord's suggestion. This way everyone can upload and report their work, and the backlog will begin to clear, ready for a fresh start.

i do wish they would start using us volunteers to a larger capacity
i know the right phonecall to Leo Apotheker could have probrobly gotten them
both of those servers free as a charitable donation and write off instead of a 20% discount

Two things

definitely no strings attached to our offer of another server - just a pity we got no reply

On the volunteer potential
This may have been offered in the past (only been back a few months) but within the SETI community there must be several well qualified DBA's SA, hardware support engineers etc who would be willing to help diagnose what actually is wrong with the servers for free - and i am sure some of those live in the Berkeley area. Also the Uni has a very good computer department that you would have thought would help out in times of need

the guys are scientist and should concentrate more on the science than trying to fix things that are not their speciality (i want them to find ET!) - yes they have lots of experience of the servers etc but its a pity they do not appear to communicate with a wider community who actually may understand the problem....

we have had an indirect reply now via "he who cannot be named" and they are waiting till the new servers are up and running first

again a pity it needed somebody else to tell us especially as done via email and no pm on the forums

Could someone bring up Beta with the same stipulations as production? (I.E. no new work, upload and reporting only...) There are some of us (me, for one) that have 85± WU that we'd (or at least, I'd) like to upload and report...

As some have taken a dislike to my posts I will make this post as my last comment on this subject.

The Cloud at your Service by Jothy Rosenberg and Arthur Mateos
Manning Pub, ISBN 9781935182528

1.2

Benefits that can be garnered from moving to the cloud

“I’ll never buy another server again,” said the Director of IT for a
medium-sized Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) company, only partially in jest,
after recently completing the deployment of a new corporate website for his
organization. This website (a PHP based application with a MySQL backend)
showcased the corporate brand and the primary online lead-generation
capability for the company’s business. Before the overhaul, it was run from
a redundant pair of web servers hosted by one of the leading managed-hosting
service providers at a total cost of roughly $2,200/month. The company
replaced the infrastructure for the original website with a cloud
implementation consisting of a pair of virtual server instances running for
roughly $250/month—almost a 90 percent savings! Its quality of service
(QoS) team monitored the performance and availability of the website before
and after the change and saw no measureable difference in the service
quality delivered to end users. Buoyed by the success with this initial
project, this organization is looking at all future initiatives for the
possibility of deployment within the cloud, including a software-build
system and offsite backup.
