Damn PC upgrades! Work have replaced my 3yr old desktop with a nice new shiny Dell Optiplex 380 Not only am I dropping from a dual Pentium D to a dual celeron, my nvidia GTS250 no longer fits! I do have a pci-e slot in the machine, but it will need to be a half height card to fit in the chassis Do Nvidia do any half decent half height cards suitable for crunching seti Sad to see the old machine go - it had crunched 3.2 million credits for me and was a trusty workhorse |

Can't you just ask it back, haven't seen half-height video cards, maybe some older ATI card like 2400. Or just take a saw and make your own 'Cutting Edge Card', just kiddin tho. Probably the Chipset used, will do the 'graphics', as 'office machines' don't need any 'graphical power'. I'll bet the case has gotten smaller, noticed there are quite a lot of those little boxes, nothing wrong with them, only very little room for anykind of expansion.... |

Damn PC upgrades! Hate to see you lose your 250, I have one in one of my machines and love it. I am not trying to be sarcastic, but have you considered getting a larger case, so that you can keep the 250 alive? |

Did you ask them what they are going to do with your old computer? Maybe you could buy it from them cheap. :-) PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

Damn PC upgrades! Low profile (that's the search term to use) CUDA cards certainly exist, but I don't know if you'd call them even half decent for SETI. So far I've found:
(the first three on general sale, the latter two on the Dell website for the Optiplex range). |

We donate our used macines to charity, and if I bought it Id have to take it off site and there is no way I would get any more machines past the missus! As for moving to another case, nothing is standard about a Dell, so it would be a nightmare job.. I have already asked for my old machine back, but they want lower power draw from all machines, so no hope there, and it is known that I have seti set to use 100% of everything, so Im a prime candidate to save the money :-) Looks like I will be putting the 250 on the bay, it's been a good little card, and a faithful machine - 3 million is not to be sniffed at.. I will check out the other cards, but I doubt they will be worth it.. |

Don't do that. Move all the Dell components into an Antec 300. Thataway you can fit a full height card in your system and not sacrifice anything. What if Fiction was Fact and Fact was Fiction and vice versa? |

MadMac-does your company know you've been crunching on their machine at work?? I'd be ***SUPER CAREFUL*** here....the guidelines for Seti have stated for years that you should get permission before crunching on an employer's machine |

A few manufacturer out there have GT240 graphic cards, which need only 'one slot space'. |

BTW. Make an internet search with 'nVIDIA low-profile' and you will also find a few.. BTW. Sparkle have a GTS250 low-profile. |

OK, now I get it, this is a workstation that can't really be modified or put in a different case. You could try an external solution like a Magma Expressbox: http://www.magma.com/expressbox2.asp The 240 only uses ~69W max so it should work with this box. The 250 is cutting it kind of close though at 150W, it could blow the PSU. Or if you're willing to get another GTS 250, here's the Newegg link to the Sparkle low profile 250: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187098 What if Fiction was Fact and Fact was Fiction and vice versa? |

Seems a shame to lose the 250. Could you just put that in one of your home machines? I'm sure you'd sneak that past the missus ..... John. GPU Users Group |
