SO far, the word is that SETI Classic will end wehn BOINC/S@H is stable. This has not happened yet, and there is a logn list of bugs to be fixed before that happens.

Origianlly the plan was to shut down classic about a month after the cross-platform GUI is released. That client is in alpha test right now and should get to us in a couple of weeks. Add in the fact that everything will take a little longer than planned and I would estimate another 3 months. Don't quote me though :)

The windows version of the cross platform UI has made it into ALPHA, none of the others have made it that far yet.

Since SETI Classic have 5224413 users - I am a bit curious what will happen when, let us say 50% of those will join SETI BOINC. What I’ve seen so far when it comes to stability of the entire SETI BOINC system I don’t think they’re up to it, even though it shown good performance lately. Bear in mind that SETI Classic still expanding in terms of new users with about 1000 every each 24 hours. All information from SETI Classic http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/totals.html

But Boinc Seti will inherit the Seti Classic hardware assets, so that may offset quite a bit of the added load. Time will tell.

While there are over 5 million people who have downloaded the SETI@HOME program, there are currently less than 500,000 active users.

My uninformed prediction:

One day you will go to the SETI classic site and there will be nothing there.

No amount of furtive clicking will uncover it.

No amount of screeching boards will awaken it.

On that day it will be safe to say, Shit O dear- it stopped.

And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer.

I would think a good starting point would be not giving out any more new SETI classic accounts...

...or simply redirecting the hyperlinks for "sign up" and "download software" to the BOINC site...

Forcing new users to the new platform will have less impact than the migration of 4.5 million from one platform to another.
