ET to rise up from inside the Moon in a few hours and SETI will get real personal. It is likely ET is in the interior of The Moon and Mars. Why not? Didn't NASA discover methane being exhausted out of an area on Mars recently? Methane equals life. Who knows what is exhausting out of vents on The Dark Side of the Moon. I believe the Earth may have Highly Advanced ETs in the Interior. Enjoyed a book about such a thing. Do ETs think it tastes like Chicken? |

I suppose/presume/guess they found ET, because this is the message I've been getting for awhile: No work sent Tell ET for me, I appreciate IT having a detectable signal. Guess the search is over. Happy 10th SETI |

Yes, because "No work sent" clearly translates to "we have found ET and have no more work!" :) |

personally i don't think we will ever find et using seti. however i think we should still crunch away because seti had layed down (and continues to) the groundwork for distributed computing. every day they find new ways to make the system run more efficient and reliable. seti was/is a pioneer in this area and DC would not be where it is today without them. although we probable wont find et this time around. who knows what will happen if/when seti version 2.0 comes about and we are using more advanced instruments then just radio telescope. besides, think of how fast computers will be in a decade or 2. we could of set the seti resolution a lot higher in anticipation of future computing power. i know matt and the team just finished increasing the resolution, but i would favour an even higher rate then what we have now. |

as far as I know, SETI search not only use radio signal, but they develop on optical signal (laser signal or infrared) too. As for S@H, specification is on radio signal. Just like Cryptokid's said, we probable won't find ET this time around, but never loss the faith to search and dig. They always give a try to developed technology used by the S@H. Ahh...here, the interesting debate between 'white' and 'black' astronomers =P N = R x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L |

Hi Cryptokid! Why are you crunching then, wasting electricity and kicking the crap out of your over-clocked gear? :-) The DC model is mature so it does not need Seti for its survival. Is this like when a guy stands at a busy city intersection looking up into the sky at nothing, then everyone around him starts doing the same? Are we just Sheep for looking for ET? Personally I believe that there is a much better chance that even this version of SETI *will* find ET in our own Galaxy; I'll go out on a limb and state (hope this doesn't start a flame-fest) that Seti has a higher probability of succeeding than a religious Diety coming here to save us. Happy crunching... |

We need another Roswell. Somebody, quick, send up a balloon. A nice shiny one. Preferably without duct tape and sticks. |

Hi, a big antenna/dish in the sky* (coupled to a space station)f.i. which receives a 'clean', RFI/RADAR signal-free, data, sended to Areicibo. Technically possible, but (certainly} far too expensive to realize, today. *(Or on another planet or moon.) Then we would have a far more 'clean signal' and can enhance resolution, again. But easier said, then done ;) |

Well, earth has received signals clearly not from our planet decoding "WOW". It was shown on NetGeo. |

Good thread. I think the aleins invented the Vlar auto killer. Strange, once upon a time, "grays" would have made me think about large headed aliens with gray skin, now the first thing that comes to mind, sounds more like a curse, "damn grays"... And terminators are to blame. |

I came on board in 2000. I wanted to help make some progress in the long SETI trek; if you want to find a needle in a haystack, you need to roll up your sleaves and start working. Back then, you got an indication of the results of your number crunching, some kind of best bet percentage. (Nowadays I cant even run those graphics because it locks up my computer.) One thing that explains the lack of progress, for past few years, is the fact that data has not really been analyzed for a long time. The S@H is really just a way to make data compact, a first step in the process of analyzing data. The small client-program scans the recorded signals in search of patterns, recording everything it finds and then returns its results... Now, we do know that with a large radiotelescope, you will hear a lot, you will get signals by the thousands, but none of that really matters, because what you really want, is a signal source, and not just any signal source, but one that is clearly outside our solar system, and not just another pulsar of anything else that could be explained by "natural causes". S@H has been really efficient in gathering data, finding signals and storing the information about them into vast, rapidly groving databases, but that is just a lot of data, not a signal source. Right now, we do not know if two signals have originated from same region of space or not. The "nitpicker" trying to sort that out. I have not been tracking the progress recently, so I don't know exactly, but last I heard of it, was that it wasn't 100% operational yet, but despite problems, for a long time some progress has been reported. Now, new servers and first runs of the "nitpicker" are still a long way from actual scientific progress, but getting it up and running is a necessity. Without it, there is no scientific progress, and that is why there is not really anything to report. The massive databases, might have a thousand ET's by now, and we wouldn't know about it, not untill that data is analyzed. Now, even if we have been operating a quite a long time without much progress to report, that doesn't mean all of this has been for nothing, gathering data is not pointless, even if it is not analyzed immediately. This is a long term project, and the search does cover the entire sky visible from Arecibo. Even after all these years, number of passes on average point in sky is still quite low. Chances of cathing two separate signals from one point, with just a few passes, is quite low, even if it would be an active signal source. So, the key to discovery is to scan the sky over and over, every point in it. At some point, we will see signal sources, many of them will be nothing more than "random noise" that happends to originate from the same direction, but maybe, just maybe, at some point, we will find something that seems more than just random noise, maybe some day we will locate our very first signal source, that cannot be explained by any natural phenomenon we know about. When you think about it, the search seems allmost hopeless, and in a way it is. But one thing I like to compare SETI to is exoplanets. Ever since humans first learned of the true nature of stars, we have been thinking that most likely other stars will have planets like our Sun does, but we didn't know that for sure until 1990's. But scientists never gave up, they kept on looking. And now there are over 100 exoplanets we know of, and more are found all the time. Personally I believe, that SETI is nearing that point. I believe that S@H does have a real chance of actually finding something. After all, we do have the biggest single telescope, and the most powerful supercomputer ever built (our computers combined) to analyze the signals in much greater detail than ever before. Now all we have to do, is gather data, analyze it, and find that signal source. I'm still optimistic, one day, we will find it. It might take years, it might take decades, but we will get there, some day. All I hope, is that I'm there to see it. |

Let me do some clucking. Venus same size; closer to sun and a hotbox. Mars is farther out and an ice cube. Sentient, signal making life in either?-if any, then in the interior. Not likely, but who knows. Geologists say we have had five major extinction events, with our present man-made one being the sixth. Not counting the two iceball Earths and many minor, but locally destructive events. Result: sentient, signal making life. Now that's a WOW, but for how long? So, sentient, signal making life needs to be on a planet in a habitable zone and lucky enough to survive the many extinction events which are common. All the above is a duh. Clucking. The best calculations I've read so far are from Asimov who concluded there are 500,000 civilisations in our Galaxy. I say most, if not all have gone extinct. For all the reasons they could go extinct and more we don't know about. Did they throw out any signals before dying off? Maybe a couple did. That's about it. Is it possible to recieve these signals here? No. It has never been about finding ET, it is only about a signal. A signal Earthlings will never hear. Stack 'em. |

Since water vapor is a main interfering agent of radio waves, this makes finding a signal less than zero. An intelligent ET is going to live on a water planet, with a very wet atmosphere-as we do. The Signal looked for will then be obscured/discombobulated and once Spacebound a signal impossible to detect. The only way for ET Signal to be detected is for ET to have facilities on dry/atmosphereless planets. This means they are travellers. Either robotic or human/robotic. Will they want to create these beacons for others to notice? It keeps getting more unlikely a signal will ever be found. I'm also wandering when the Voyager craft get beyond the Termination Shock, Heliopause, and Bow Shock, whether their signals(assuming they still have power to send) will be detectable. iStack 'em. |
