One thing to watch Andy. US speedometers are accurate. They don't read 10% high as legally required in Britain. There is some customary slack on the speed enforcement (5mph I think), but if it says 55 on the speedo then you really are.

@ Andy: Actually The speedometers aren't calibrated here anymore Andy(It's not been a legal requirement for a number of Years) so are relatively accurate and in CA the CHP has said there is No such thing as slack in speed enforcement, If You are doing 70mph, Yer safe If 70mph is the posted speed limit, If Yer doing 70.1mph or more You could get busted and there are some all white CHP cruisers that look like an ordinary FORD, But beware they aren't, I've seen them along the highway and all their lights are either in the grill or inside in the back behind where the prisoner compartment is located at(the Cage) with only a Decal on the doors to give them away as CHP Cars, You've been warned as they can pop up anywhere.

@ Andy: Be careful Driving on the I10 and I15 Freeways as both are prone to accidents and I've see a few too, But not been in one at least.

We have them locally here in Northern AZ, too, but they have several different models, not just Crown Vics (Fords); could be that Nissan Sentra following you is a "local yokel" in an unmarked car - and these really are unmarked; nothing on them to give them away as a cop car (can't even see the lights - until they come on).

I-10 and I-17 in the Phoenix area are, as well.

I'm sorry (just kidding)

@SJ: Thank you for the update. The key point remains that one cannot rely on the speedo reading 10% high which is mandated in the UK. Your point about the unmarked cars is very well urged.

I only lived in CA for about 12 years, and it wasn't that recently. Now I'm a dual resident of Reno, NV and London, UK.

If he is in LA going to San Diego, then he will be taking the I5 or 405. Both have heavy traffic on weekends. So speeding will not be an issue. SJ as far as getting nailed for .1 mph over the speedlimit. That's not true here. Normal for my area is 10 mph over. If you go 65 in a 65 around here, you run the risk of getting rearended.

Maybe there, But out here the two freeways I mentioned are the most dangerous in the state. Oh and It's a bit windy out here too still. Oh and there's always the slow lane, As this isn't the autobahn here.

It is once a year. The CHP division commander is a member of the Ferrari Owner's club. Annually the Belagio holds a club weekend. Most of us meet up at Barstow for the drive to the state line. About 20 miles out of town, we get the go ahead and the CHP actually pulls cars over so we can unwind the ponies. Since, this is a public forum, I cannot say how fast we are allowed to go. But use your imagination.

SJ, you take the fun out of eveything. Just think of it this way. If Andy gets a speeding ticket, he will have to come back and visit again in about 30 to 45 days.

If Andy gets pulled over, and shows his UK licence (and some respect), he might well get let off with a warning.
My experience of US cops is that they are far more inclined to be reasonable than UK ones.

Hi Cebion - While you weren't looking I drank that coffee, so thanks.
