If the last WU is processing and no other WU is available anymore, then Boinc hangs.

Boinc takes 50% of CPU time and the GUI is not accessible anymore. It can not be opened or closed.

Boinc can only be stopped by using the taks manager. As a result, the last WU goes into a computation error (to be checked).

Win XP Pro SP1, P4 2.4@2.88, Boinc 4.09 and using last applications available.

Running S@H and LHC.

Greetings from Belgium.

On HT I have this too.

yes 50% for gui and 50% for Seti or cpdn, what else is left. Both seen.

Eaven if the gui looks like it went to "nirvana", from remote you can send suspend rpc then the gui realives.

remote management still works, the 50% "left", itdo work..and progress work

Have this seen on 3 clients.

Gui 4.09 m$. XP, 2003 and 2000 clients

Running seti cpdn lhc

The clients have not monitor/screen attached, cant test.
I'm thinking, rebooting to bios, setting HT OFF (for a while)could solve for the moment the nirwaned gui. Was to lazy to do it.

myself still let run, even with 50% und til more work will come. I want only run one cpdn per client.

greetings back
ric

I've seen exactly this behaviour on my Dual Pentium III XP2. Never happened before BOINC 4.09.

downgrading is always a valid option! and I heard about it in other threads too... apperantly with 4.09 it happens sometimes, with 4.10 beta more often, and with 4.11 beta even more often... for now, try downgrading or using only one project as a workaround.

Or, go to your preferences and change them so it only uses 1 CPU. (or multiple if its currently set to only use 1 CPU). That might do the trick while this is being fixed.

Downgrading isn't an option anymore. SETI is forcing you to go to at least 4.09 now.

This a nasty bug, it's affecting every P4 HT I am trying to set-up now, work around = setting to one CPU, downloading work, then setting back to two cpu's.

I have not run out of work yet, I am not looking forward to it either.

After finally being forced to upgrade BOINC 4.05 to 4.09, I am now faced with this exact problem. Thanks! BOINC 4.05 was running great on all my PCs, and yet for some reason I was forced to upgrade to 4.09 and things are broken in a major way.

Is there anything else that can be done short of changing the processor settings? If I let BOINC run, will this work itself out eventually?

I think someone mentioned that running more than 1 project at a time also causes problems in 4.09. Since that's out, I'd suggest attaching to CPDN (for their gargantuan WUWUWUWUs) and running that alone until this problem is fixed.

sure downgrading is a valid options.. last I checked you can still run climate prediction and LHC with the 4.05 version....

As for it solving itself, it might, but its highly unlikely since its cross project nature suggests its a core client problem not a project cleint one.

I am confused here. I also run cp.net (1 WU per machine except for the Mac Dual G5 with two), LHC@Home and SETI@Home (also had Predictor@Home for awhile with just SETI@Home) and I don't see this behavior on 4 different HT machines.

I do get interesting intermixtures of work on the various machines with which two WU will be in work at any given moment.

And it seems to switch back and forth on the work as it is supposed to. Though I was having a little trouble getting LHC@Home work yesterday. And a couple of my machines are getting low on work to do ...

I had a problem similar to this yesterday when I finally upgraded my work computer to Boinc 4.09. I'm running a P4 2.4 w/ HT turned on. I already had SP2 and all other updates from Microsoft. My problem finally went away after I uninstalled Boinc(lost about 5 WUs :(...), then deleted the BOINC directory and reinstalled then reattached to projects. I did get a short time after that the problem came back, but I simply let it set over lunch and when I came back it was good. I haven't had any problems since. I had tried letting it sit for a couple hours before trying the uninstall/reinstall process.

OK you HAVE SP2 but,... do you have the UPDATE OF TODAY???
TODAY 6 oct there is a patch from MS UPDATE for some processors causing problems with XP. This has to be installed AFTER installation of SP2.

Greetz ;-))

I know you were quoting the person above me, but yes, I checked yesterday and again this morning and I'm all caught up on MS patches. Although my problem went away now and what seemed to fix it had nothing to do with MS patches.

Just my 2 cents,

Ooops!

I misunderstood the problem ...

Belay my last!

I know why I don't see the problem ... I never have gotten close to running out of work ...

I took my own advice and have a 4 day queue size and also do manual updates every once in a while so, with 3 projects (two only on the Mac) I get and keep a fair supply of work on hand ...

Thx for the reply, but just to be sure that nothing ELSE is in this case the culprit - ie. to get the focus on the origin of the bug all other possibilities should be excluded. That is keep our OS clean and uptodate...
MS connected to warn us for possible problems with "some" processors and XP Prof.

If this is a BOINC?-Seti? bug it shurely is a nasty one. The Dev's will have to look into this one.

I've been to the Windows Update site today twice and they aren't showing that I need any patches.

This is strange, we got the update automatically...
Oh yes, we are behind a router with firewall and well protected. The update really came from MS. I'll try to do some investigation, if I have news I'll keep you informed.
