Same here. Unfortunately, we have a similar problem in that the government wants to close down Jodrell Bank.

News today was that that has been averted.

I'd like to volunteer a year service to Arecibo... Assuming accommodations are provided.

Letters sent. But I feel like I'm a boob mailing three other boobs. The NSF sucks air and bends over to grab their ankles for more important people than us, I'm afraid.

(Maybe we can get the 007 fans out there to join us; isn't that where part of Golden Eye was filmed? Saving it would be sort of like saving a global historic site, right?)

Just waiting for the fireworks to begin.

Just finished reading the latest issues received of "Solar System", a partwork here in the UK on building your own Orrery.

They deal with NEO's. On reading further, they state that Arecibo is part of "Superguard" funded by Congress. Why in hell do they want to close it down for? Or have they come up with something better?

Please, also consider using the Parkes radio telescope.

Yes, yes, I know; it's smaller than Arecibo, but Parkes is still far better than no radio telescope at all.

Henri.

A radio telescope on the dark side of the moon would be nicer... No RFI at all!! It would be much easier to interprete/analys the results as natural ones (pulsar, black holes,...) or aliens.

Well right now that would be horribly expensive, But then We don't know how to build in a total vacuum, Outside of pre made modules and a big dish would have to have some sort of permanent foundation that is, Lets see How one pours concrete in a vacuum, Not.

In any case I've emailed My states 3 California elected officials(2 Senators and a Congressman) about Arecibo.

Can another country help fund the Arecibo Observatory? Why can't they / why won't they? It's kind of like a International Space Station – just on the ground. If another country could pitch in, I think it would help stabilize funding. Plus, all it would take is a North Korea or Iran to offer funding and congress would restore full funding.

I would ask your equivalent representatives in your country if they are willing to contact the U.S. and offer such a deal. Perhaps if there were enough demand, something could be done.

Good luck.
