I have not worn a watch in about 8 years. I carry my phone (or my PDA) with me most of the time and it has a clock and calendar on it, so thats all I need :)

All that watch had to say to make me like it was "All Titanium". If you can believe it, I just got this , bottom left, model GW500A-1V.

I am obsessed with watches in the sense that i feel naked without mine on...I'll be on the way to work and turn around if i forget to put it on...But that rarely happens...because i almost always have my watch on...even when i'm sleeping...Mine is just a Timex Ironman Triathlon water resistant to 100 meters...But not really a diving watch...Just a very tough watch that can handle crashing into things like i do.

I haven't worn a watch since the mid 80's. I was doing a head alignment on one of those massive CDC/MSU drives which required having the drive powered up and spinning with an alignment pack loaded in. With a funky little metal rod inserted into the actuator/head assembly, you had to gently tweak each head while watching an oscilloscope to get the alignment right. For reasons never determined, at that very moment the power blipped off to the entire complex causing the the heads on the drive to unload FAST. (WHOOSH! BANG!) That aforementioned funky little metal rod blasted back with the actuator snagging my watchband, snapping it apart, and driving the end of our friend, the funky rod, about a half inch into that fleshy area between your thumb and index finger. There in the dark I was sure it had ripped my hand clean off, but once we got some light on it, it was more of a minor flesh wound. But it scared the peewadin outta me. Never fixed the watchband, or wore a watch since then. See? I ain't as dumb as I look.

Try taking it to 60 Feet of Sea Water and see what happens.

That is a seriously nice bit of kit. Would I buy it - no. It wouldn't last 2 minutes on my wrist before it was scratched, chipped or even smashed. I am really heavy handed :D

That must have been a real scary bit!! Total darkness, noise and pain. You obviously survived the ordeal....did the drive?

Real watches don't have batteries, or any type of electronics.

Mechanical watches are marvels of micromachining. Just try overhauling a classic chronograph sometime.

For John, there's my Benrus Type II, or if you want more modern, the Seiko Orange Monster, or the Benrus homage based on a Seiko SKX009.

Standard daily wear is one of a handful of chronos - Omega Speedmaster, a sterile PVD'd 7750 chrono, or maybe the Heuer Autavia.

Have you ever tried one on? Treat yourself! You should go to a jeweller's and try one on. There's something about that smooth heavy gold that weighs a ton on your wrist that really gives you a tingle of joy. What a feeling it is to have all that weight on your arm!


This one used to be called "The President". Nowadays they call it "The Oyster Perpetual Day-Date.

It feels great to be wearing one of these. You feel like a King, it's as good as wearing a crown, better probably. :]]

@ the moment have a Seiko, witch is actually waterproof up to 50m (~150feet).
Also is very accurate, never have ' update' the time.Real light weighted too.

Watches are another manifestation of my collecting instincts. I once bought two ROLEX President's models on the streets of New York for $90. About 10 years later I bought two of the same with the diamond bezel for $15 each in a rubber plantation in Malaysia. These fakes lasted several years before the gold wore off. They told reasonable time and were good enough to fool anyone who saw them on your wrist.

You would know them to be fakes only if you hefted them up and compared them to a real ROLEX. For about $200-$300 you can get a really good Japanese fake and for around $1000 there are swiss fakes that are very hard to tell from the original.. There is a lot of scamming here in that some will try to get the $1000 for the Japanese model that they pass off as Swiss-made.

I have one of the original 18-K gold Bulova ACCUTRON space-view watches. It is now 45 years old--its the one with the tuning fork and discrete electronic components showing through an open face.

I also have one or two other cheaper SEIKO watches with just the stop-watch functions added to the normal Time function.

The SEIKO Blue Angel AVIATOR is a nice watch. I have two of these and a dressier SEIKO with all of the world time and stopwatch functions as well. These are in the $300-$400 dollar range

For every-day rough and tumble wear I have the SEIKO G-SHOCK. This sells for less than $50. It has atomic clock connectivity, Solar power, stop watch, alarm modes and world time functions. I use it to time my steaks etc when I am out on the grill. Mine is now more than 5 years old and has never missed a lick.

If I were wealthy I would have a Brietling Navigator or a Rolex Daytona.

Of course the Seiko Quartz watches will be far more accurate than any ROLEX especially with Atomic Clock corrections. Mine is accurate to the second all of the time.

It's probably not going to be easy to make a call, but then again if I was in 60 meters of sea water with my phone I'm probably in the bar of a cruise ship on its way to the bottom of the ocean!

Now about the Rolex being waterproof at 50m, yes I'm sure it is. You see, Rolex first made a name for itself in 1926 by presenting the first waterproof and dustproof watch.

"Rolex's big breakthrough came in 1926, when Wilsdorf developed a case that was impervious and waterproof. The secret was a revolutionary double-locking crown that screwed down on the case like a submarine hatch to create an airtight seal. Recalling his difficulty in prying open an oyster at a dinner party, Wilsdorf christened his creation the Rolex Oyster.

One of the main problems at the time was, that dust and moisture would enter in the watch case and progressively damage in movement. To solve, one would need to develop a completely dust and waterproof watch case. Dust and water would enter watch cases via the casebook and via the crown. Wilsdorf [Rolex original watchmaker] developed a screw crown and casebook mechanism that revolutionized the watch industry.

The first waterproof watch was cleverly advertised around the world. At the time, the public was rather skeptical if the watch would be really waterproof. However, after seeing a watch in an aquarium in the shop window, many people were convinced."
