Writer Arthur C Clarke dies at 90

British science fiction writer Sir Arthur C Clarke has died in Sri Lanka at the age of 90.
Born in Somerset, he came to fame in 1968 when a short story The Sentinel was made into the film 2001: A Space Odyssey by director Stanley Kubrick.

Once called "the first dweller in the electronic cottage", his vision of future space travel and computing captured the popular imagination.

I won't say "I will miss him", because I never knew him. But I know I will never miss his wonderful books, and that they will never be missing from my bookshelves.

Thanks for the stories.

Evening Everyone

This is a sad day. The passing of a Very Great Person, he was concerned about many things in life (in many areas of science) that he felt important. One of those small things that he felt was important is Seti.

What is not known was that the Donation Letter for the current Donation drive (and others) were always sent to Sir Arthur Clarke for approval. One other thing that followed was a small check which represented about 1/4th of the operating budget for the year.

This year, there was no response when the letter was sent and then another was contacted for approval. That delayed the donation drive for unstated reasons. As many have asked (privately), Now "we" know.

Rest In Peace, Fair Winds and Following Seas!

or the mis-quoted, "Straight on until tomorrow to the first star on the left."

Yes, Dan Wertheimer, who was the one from the admins here who was in personal contact with Sir Arthur, must be very influenced by this news.

So the death of Sir Arthur is a great loss, not only to his readers, but also to all those projects he supported through his foundation. He was not only an icon in space science and sci-fi literature, he also was a great benefactor to this project.

I hope his foundation will continue with their support of this project. I had the pleasure to speak with his representative in England last year on the phone. In fact I wondered for some days if it was Sir Arthur himself I spoke with, but after hearing his voice in a taped interview, I could determine that it wasn't Sir Arthur himself but his representative I had on the phone.

I am surprised he has died; I was just reading an article about him. I wonder, if he will be cremated, might NASA launch his ashes into space?

I agree with Andy.

When I lived in Somerset, 25 years ago, it was in Glastonbury (just below the Tor) making the Minehead journey (via Bridgwater) a little longer than Andy needs to do.

Arthur C's writings will now freeze in time, the fate of all of us.

Rest in peace
It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues

Sci-fi writer Clarke laid to rest
British science-fiction writer Sir Arthur C Clarke has been buried in his adopted country of Sri Lanka.
Music from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey was played at the funeral and members of the family which had adopted him cried as his coffin was lowered.

"Here lies Arthur C Clarke. He never grew up and did not stop growing," his gravestone in Colombo is to read, in accordance with the author's wishes.

Sir Arthur died from heart failure and breathing problems at the age of 90.

A nationwide minute's silence was ordered by the Sri Lankan government to coincide with the ceremony.

Sir Arthur's brother, Fred Clarke, attended the funeral along with members of the Ekanayake family, with whom the writer had lived in recent years.

Post-polio syndrome meant Sir Arthur had used a wheelchair since 1995.

Fred Clarke said his elder brother had "always loved" the "warm climate and the friendly people" of Sri Lanka.

"He said he had managed to escape 40 British winters and had no regrets," Mr Clarke told AFP news agency.

Tamara Ekanayake, who grew up at Sir Arthur's home in Colombo, paid tribute to him at the service, saying: "We feel so privileged that you left your mark on us."

"Your footprint will never fade. If anything, it will only magnify what we do," she told mourners.

Before the funeral, yellow roses were thrown on to Sir Arthur's body as a final gesture of respect as it lay on a white bed beneath curved elephant tusks.

Thank You!

Besides Seti and the few people that read Seti few know how much an impact he had in the world. Most have only touched on a few things, most do not know that he is one of the most prolific people in our age. Many do not know that because of his vision, many things that that were unthought of are now reality.

I count myself fortunate that I have read about 30% of his works. With that I know Seti can become a reality as was his wishes. Finding ET within my lifetime.

Regards

Al
