Have you not noticed? The 2.4V that Frozen Penny is dropped back to when not running test code is SSE4 (Crunch(3r)y) variety.

Message 733606 - Posted: 2 Apr 2008, 17:54:28 UTC - in response to Message 733513.

i have a e8400 .. need another tester ??

Hi There, Just for info ,
The r26 SSE4.1 version has been built on an E8400 and I am doing a test run on mine now, which is also running conservatively OC'd to 3.6GHz just like yours. If you are running 2.4V SSSE3 [I see you are] then you might want to compare the times ... Looks like a mid range AR ~0.38 (~74 credit) take about 4400 seconds on yours, and 2800 seconds on mine. output ratio is 1.57 times, speedup component is ~36%. Some angle ranges are better performance , some are lower than this.

Heh heh.....you are just taunting the poor lad......LOL.

About ready to cut the Frozen Penny back to 2.4v for the day, and then off to work again......

Looking forward to seeing Fred's graphs when I get home.

Thanks again Jason, for all of your efforts.....very promising indeed Sir.

So while Penny is "testing" the new port live, gaining ground on Thurston, I've scaled Thurston back to 2.4V trying to fill in the VHAR hole in the performance charts for comparison (while I've got the VHAR WUs available.) Dang nab it, I might never catch you at this rate :-(

But who?s Skulltrail might be within reach even if you aren't... I'd rather bag an 8-core OCd X9775 than a 4-core X9650 anyway. A bit more impressive when mounted and hung on the wall, if you know what I mean :-)

All in good fun, my friend, and all in good time....

Well you've scalped the MadCat: top Q6600 ATM (@47). Congrats.

Watch out Who? That rustling in the long grass is a stalking Whale ;)

And your not? Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, Funnily enough, That's similar to one of the nicknames I'm considering for the Release app, Mostly derived from Monty Python's Holy Grail:

- The legendary Black Beast of Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh!, v8.0
- ShrubMaster, v8.0 [probably my current favourite]
- Killer Rabbit, v8.0
- Black Knight, v8.0

Maybe next week I'll put up a poll at the Lunatic's forum, If the feature is functioning.

Jason

I feel rude for not offering congrats to Jason Gee and all the other contributors in this effort from Lunatics.at.

So, here it is: thanks to everyone! Your skills are truly great and the effort is truly impressive from everyone involved.

I, too am rude for not saying THANKS! to all involved in this project. In my defense, I was ignorant of how this all came to be and who all the actors were. No more. My eyes have been opened and I've seen the light. Thanks Jason Gee and thanks Lunatics.

I have great confidence in the statements above :-)

Hate to admit it, but tonight is going to filled with tension and might explain my "possum like" behavior....

A bit over 3 weeks ago, on March 8, THURSTON reached #48 on this same list, I've posted his local RAC chart and will do so again after todays close, Thurstons RAC on that "ill-fated" night was 4369. Then along comes the WU from ehll, forcing the BSOD and subsequent thrashing of a MoBo that just won't POST.

That fiery WU not only took out Thurston MoBo, but also fried his memory. It was the same memory that was in the mighty E4500 host (Lovey) when this thread started and would cause Lovey to lock up every 7-8 hours. The same memory that crunched the first WU with the original AK_WhalePort that started all this hoopla. A couple days ago I put the RMAd replacement memory back into Thurston, Crucial BALLISTIX DDR2-1066, bumped the voltage up to 2.2V, bumped AK_WhalePort from V0.2C (Core2) to V0.2X (Xeon). We come full circle.

Though this time around Thurston is running at a much more modest 3200Mhz rather than the 3600MHz and His memory has slowed from DDR2-1200MHz, He is making his run with AK_WhalePort and not skipping one single beat. But my spine is tingling as I observe with a sense of deja vu. (Or like one of my favourite all-time baseball players has said, "It's DejaVu all over again". Yogi Berra)

So in the past 3 weeks the RAC for the same position (#48) on the "Top Hosts" list has changed by ~500. And here we sit, on the same rung of the ladder, only a little bit higher in the air. Again we come full circle.

Yep, tonight I'm a bit scared, thus I'm just a whale in waiting, "playing possum" so to say. Hoping that tonight we break from the full circle and break out instead.

BOINC onward though the fog,
JDWhale

[edit]
I just realized that the performance boost being seen with v0.2X might be related to the memory speed going from DDR2-800 to DDR2-1066. After todays close at 24:00 UDT, I'll switch back to v0.2C and recheck the numbers. You can check the results yourself, the AK_WhalePort version is displayed in stderr.
[/edit]

[edit2]
On the other hand hosts Wrongway(Whale2) & Lovey(Whale1) have not been shut down in more than 2 weeks and shows similar benefits as Thurston when running V0.2X over v0.2C After all, I will not be converting Thurston to v0.2C at 24:00 UDT and will continue running v0.2X. Addin that I ran v0.2C last night for a few WUs and the results agree with the charts, V0.2X is ~8% faster than V0.2C in the mid-angle WUs.

The theme song from Jaws seems to have just popped into My head thinking of this, As to the Whale stalkin the Who, What came up 18 tons and what do I get, another day older and deeper in debt(DrWho? is in 406th right now[splat], It's going to take Him sometime to reach where I am of course, I'm at 204th for the moment). Probably not the best, But Jaws does seem to fit somehow at least. :D In any case just like a few others have said, Great job all around guys. :)

The Q6600s seem to cluster around an RAC of 3500 to 4500, with many a little higher than yours. My QX6700 seems to be in the same boat, and the limitation I think is my Asus P5B MoBo.

I would think, as soon as the Alex code port is released on Lunatics, that your Quads could each top out at between 5500 and 6000.

At the moment I am trying to find the best clock speed on the Q6600's, so every few days I bump them up 50Mhz or so. Both PC's are used for other things (Media PC = massive file server with clost to 4TB of space. The other Quad is my PC with dual 22" screens, so it gets used to watch movies, IRC, download legal items, surfing the net, email etc etc. They might not take up a lot of time, but it all adds up.

Shhhhhhh.... I'm playing possum ;-)

LOL.....Yes, I am running a basically beta build of SSE4 2.4v that Crunch3r did for me quite some time ago.....it has no hand tweaks, he just compiled it for SSE4 rather than 3...
If I recall, Fred did some graphing on that when I first started running it, and there was very little advantage over the SSSE3 2.4v code....

And BTW, the Phased Penny crashed today and was down for the last 8 hours or so....I had noticed just a few errors, and this morning changed the RAM voltage in bios from 1.9v to 1.95v....it didn't like that.....so it will probably drop a peg or two.......now's your chance to put a Whale whoopin' on da kitties...LOL.

The SSE3 AMD version functions fine [including on Phenom] and will be part of initial release. SSE3 is minimum at this stage due to Alex's advanced hand code.

What about 'Jabberwocky, v8.0' (by Terry Gilliam, 1977), Jason...?:)

And...

"Jabberwocky" is a poem of nonsense verse written by Lewis Carroll, Several of the words in the poem are of Carroll's own invention.

"Jabberwocky" has become famous around the world, with translations into many languages. The task of translation is the more notable and difficult because many of the principal words of the poem were simply made up by Carroll, having had no previous meaning. Translators have generally dealt with these words by inventing words of their own.

Does this sound to you like something, Jason...? I think it's a good name for this challenge... Very appropiated, I think ...

As you wait in trepidation that history does not repeat itself, do not become a beached Whale as this will take your breath away.

Congratulations on returning to number 48, even if the competition is ~500 CS higher. Number 38 and above awaits your attendance.

Keep crunching, and we will see the results of Jason et al's Ak post soon.

I look forwards, as many are saying, to getting my hands on the final first release.

Take a look at the UTC time of your post, and ponder the point that Fred W lives in the UK.

However, as a happy user of his vac, I've started a run. I suspect the one I'll do in the morning will be more informative, with more samples on a richer range, but I'll post here if the extract does not break in the middle.

I'm not Fred W, but it is only 9:05 p.m. in Albuquerque, so here is an initial scatter plot to keep you until morning.

Comments:
1. The luck of the Angle Range draw put some results between .72 and 1.09, with consistent huge advantage of crunch3r distribution, but no comparisons available from the various ports of Alex Kan code.

2. at A.R. of .432096 we have three Whale 0.2X averaging 2002 seconds, and 18 of the KanJasG26 averaging 2093 seconds. Given the very tight scatter, this is a convincing difference.

3. I suspect some of the unimpressive results at .3952 were transition units. If pure, however, they would mean a problem.

I've reduced the x axis range for better view--for this comparison there was nothing going on so far below .01 or above 10 for Angle Range.

I'll take another look in the morning, and post to the same URL.
