Hiya Beets!

My RAC is gonna' rise... as well as my points...
As I write, I have 50 odd tasks in my queue... on my new laptop that I type on....
Thank you for all your help you have given me over the past few weeks!!!

Also, thanks for your help on Chess notation, I'm practicing a few easy problems I've found on the net. I'll be posting in Ice's chess challenges perhaps in a few days.

Best Regards and keep on crunching,
Luke.

No need for Congress to probe NFL scandal

Union Tribune editorial

Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., has it almost exactly right when it comes to the New England Patriots' cheating scandal and the NFL's ham-handed efforts to bury it as quickly as possible.

Specter, an ardent Eagles fan, has blasted the league for its lack of candor. He has called for an independent investigation of the Patriots' videotaping of opponents' signals, contending the league cannot be trusted to tell the real story.

In fact, new details about the videotaping emerged this week when Specter revealed what he learned in a meeting with Matt Walsh, the former Patriots' employee at the center of the scandal. And, it was only after Specter met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in February that the league confirmed that the Patriots' cheating dated to 2000, earlier than previously known.

Where we part company with the senator is at his suggestion that if the NFL does not convene an appropriate outside investigation, Congress might well have to conduct hearings and “take corrective action.”

There is plenty about Goodell's handling of the scandal that deserves independent scrutiny, starting with his decision in September to swiftly destroy the six videotapes and accompanying notes turned over to the league when the scandal came to light. Then there are the piecemeal disclosures of information, changing statements and positions, and reluctance to aggressively seek out and interview all witnesses who help shed light on the matter.

Given the NFL's vast popularity, not to mention the staggering sums of money it generates, the American public deserves assurance of the league's fundamental integrity.

But with an unpopular war in Iraq, a stagnant economy, rising gas and food prices and more, Congress has plenty it can tackle before deposing Goodell and Bill Belichick, the Patriots' head coach and architect of the cheating scandal.

Hello Dear Friends!!!

It's good to be back from the Land of the OUTage!!!

Thanks very much Stealth, Albert, Tim,Champ, Richard...and especially you, Misfit...for keeping the joint alive and kicking. That was Good of you guys!!!

We had two power outages in a row, the first hit most of the town including my house, and the second one the day after hit the east and west ends of our burgh.

It was the second one that kept me real busy. I went around to friends in the east and west, especially older friends of my parents. One of them, John McL (no relation to our John McL)was old enough that he had to be at home, if he wasn't in the hospital. I called the hospital, he wasn't there. I called the police. They had their hands full and wouldn't come out to help check on him. I told them I was about to commit a crime, and I did. I committed my first Break and Enter in my life by breaking the glass pane in his side door. He was home alright, and he was in bad shape! Somehow I managed to get him into Baby and drove him straight to emergency. It turns out that a mistake he'd made in his medications (taking them in the dark) had caused him to get into all kinds of complications, and that in another few hours he might have died! I've visited John a couple of times since then in the hospital, and he seems to be doing fine. Needless to say, he's been effusive with his thanks (to the point that it's a bit embarrassing, actually). So that worked out well.

So it's "Burglar Beets", at your service. :]]

I was also trying to help out at the yacht Club, which suffered a fair amount of damage in our recent floods to our piers, some cave-ins with poles missing and such). Some boats had capsized but with The Steadfast gone, I really couldn't be of much use in that department.

Back to these power outages: they can be a pain. You can't get anything at the stores, they all close down including the convenience stores and so do all the restaurants. So stocking up on some tinned food, a working flashlight with fresh batteries (the larger ones with the big batteries are best), some votive candles, a roll of quarters for the outside landline telephones) is a must. Police and fire stations are the best places to find out what's going on. If it's winter, heat becomes a problem: a few cans of Sterno would be a good idea.

This I have to mention: Skype is no good in a power outage. Without electricity your cellphones won't work, and besides: Skype cannot place any calls to police, fire, ambulance, any emergency system. So it's a washout.

My computer is fine but I'm way behind on PMs and email. I'll catch up as best as I can.

So how is everyone? What's been going on around the forums?

Ahhh! It feels good to be back home!!! :]]
