Dear Editor: The proposed two-year moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in South L.A. will do nothing to make people lose weight. But it will make their lives less free and fulfilling. Despite the demonization of the fast food industry, places like McDonald's and Wendy's provide Americans with a convenient source of tasty, affordable food. Millions of Americans enjoy these restaurants without ever becoming obese. To punish them--as well as potential fast-food restaurant owners and employees--in order to control what they eat is a shameful violation of their rights. The government has no business dictating where and what people eat, or what their waistlines should be. Those are decisions that properly belong to individuals. The L.A. City Council should reject this disgraceful ban. Don Watkins Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! I did NOT authorize this belly writing! |

In case you weren't aware, this diatribe was a response to a new proposed law outlawing fatty foods and so forth... Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! I did NOT authorize this belly writing! |

I agree...People can get fat if they eat too much of just about anything...It's up to the individual how much they eat...and what they eat...McDonald's and Burger King are just serving the kind of food that people like...They aren't responsible if you eat too much of it and get fat. PROUD TO BE TFFE! |

True. But it seems today no one wants to take responsibility for anything, much less their own actions. As for the ban. The city council probably is trying to make it look like they are listening to those that are complaining that such places make you fat and are trying to appear that they are making an effort. And I choose not to eat their stuff. It doesn't interest me. But that's my choice. Never surrender and never give up. In the darkest hour there is always hope. |

Doesn't the fact that certain Fast food resturants produce their food in such a way as to make it addictive and mood altering negate their rights to protection? It's too simplistic to trot out such cliches as "Nobody forces you too eat this stuff", but making a bic mac addictive means somebody does, they do! Banning a company with such shoddy practices seems at the very least a step in the right direction, |

All food alters your mood!...Any food can be addicting...If they don't make a Big Mac taste delicious...who'd buy them?...People can eat too much at home and get fat...Should we shut down mom because her Angel Food Cake is addictive? It's too paranoid to infer that they are adding drugs to the food to make us want the stuff. PROUD TO BE TFFE! |

Personally, I would love to know how people get fat! For nearly 40 years, I eat what want, when I want & often upset friends & family when I just sit there enjoying loads of cream cakes & the like. My weight has hardly flucuated from 8 & half stone over those years. So if someone knows how I can increase my weight, I'd love to hear from them. |

We need more nanny state government to dictate everything we do. After all we are only children and the politicians know bestestessteestts for us. We're not adults. Besides , who are we to question those that know better than us and those that truly hold our best interests at heart? Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Doesn't the fact that certain Fast food resturants produce their food in such a way as to make it addictive and mood altering negate their rights to protection? Apparently so. That's how wussified we've become. But if you spot a spare Big Mac lying around, or if you were to be able to pick me up in a nice car and take me to attain said Big Mac I would be most appreciative. But please do not call me 'Shirley'. My aunt is 'Shirley'. Not me...I'm just questing for the last Big Mac like Diogenes. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Yuk to big macs! Never have liked them and RARELY if ever frequent their premises. What they need is portion control. period |

I don't eat all that crap. I have just one body to take care of and eating Big Macs and all that junk food is not the way to do it. I prepare practically all my meals and don't go to restaurants (fast food or otherwise) very often. Girls have some sort of protection until menopause so might be able to eat some trash until then. Of course there are many exceptions - many fat people do just darn right fine and live into their 90s. And there are the slims that die at fifty. Maybe doctors are wrong. I see a lot of medical people, especially girls, that are fat. Maybe they're hypocrites, or, downright liars. But I'm still trying to play if safe. I don't need to eat trash or be fat, and so I don't. I don't miss fat, salt or excessive sugar. |

They can have my Big Mac when they pry it out of my.....Wait a minute! I don't eat Big Macs. I eat real burgers. Hardee's Monster Burger. 2/3 lb of meat with cheese and bacon. Add two large orders of curly fries and I am set. Portion control won't work. I'll just buy two or three at a time. People will eat what they want to eat. I'm trying to get back to the weight I was 15 years ago. I don't eat as much fast food as I used to. In fact I don't eat as much, period, as I used to. It's called self control. It's tough at times but it can be done. I'm down 5 lbs over the last month. Hopefully once I reach my target weight I can start prying the other monkey off my back. Now, nicotine, THAT'S addictive. Hopefully the cosmos is not trying to reverse the charges. Moderation in all things. |

It's a known fact that fat and sugar release endorphines in the brain so of course many people like to eat fatty and sweet food. They get a kick out of it, a kick given them by their own body. This mechanism is a part of our biology and our evolution, a mechanism we would have been an extinct specie without. I like Big Mac's, I eat Big Mac's. Big Mac's are ok but I'll take a big juicy 'Heartattack on a bun' any day over a Big Mac. Hopefully the cosmos is not trying to reverse the charges. Moderation in all things. |

Of course not, why jog at least 3 miles to get a "runner's high" when you can sit in your comfy chair eating cheesy poofs, cookies, and sweets and get the same kick?
