Actually, free speech rights are rather simple: It prevents the government from interfering and gagging you...

This does not mean you get to say what you want, when you want no does it garauntee a right to social interaction.

Yep. These are private websites. You have no right to freedom of speech here or Predictor. Their toys, their rules.

Perhaps but our cpus and our electricity bill.

Which is why the one person, not Braun, said to "vote with your feet" and crunch elsewhere.

Agreed, I myself often have customers I wish would go to ... someplace else. But that's just it, like my wages, his project is fueled by "customers". You and I pay the bill with electricy and associated costs. (snip)
When dealing with the public, don't bite the hand that feeds you.

I used to deal with the public. Retail sales... I can tell you first hand that there are indeed instances where the customer is NOT "always right". I had one customer in particular that INTENTIONALLY went against what I advised him to purchase just so that he could come back kick and scream about how *I* didn't listen to his needs so he could DEMAND the higher priced item for less money. I was not on commission and I had told him my honest opinion the first time around. He didn't like the price, so he hatched a dishonest scheme to try to use that "always right" principle against the company. My manager went along with him, but only halfway ($200 off instead of $400 off).

I used to work at Best Buy as a computer geek...we had a sale on a dial-up modem, remember those days?, that included free instalation by us. Some guy came in with a no name machine and bought the modem and we tried for 2 days to get it to work. No way that thing would work in his machine!!!! So when he called he screamed and yelled and wanted to know why it wouldn't work, I told him we sold stuff of good and better quality and he had bought one of the lower quality items. I din't tell him, but it was JUNK!!!! Anyway he hung up the phone, cutting me off, and called my boss. I got a letter of reprimand and told to never tell the customer we sell "lower quality" merchandise. They guy came in to pick up his machine and after talking to me he bought a $150.00 EXCELLENT quality modem and even paid for installation! He then further upgraded the machine and ended up spending almost $500.00 dollars on it. He called my boss the next day, thanking him and telling him what a good job I had done and I got ANOTHER reprimand and told to NEVER talk about "lower quality" stuff at Best Buy again! I told my boss to pack it and I walked out! We gave the guy back his $20.00 and he then spent almost $500.00 and I got a reprimand, TWICE!!! The customer was EXTREMELY pleased and said he wished he had talked to me initially and hadn't had to go thru the troubles. We installed the 2nd modem while he waited, worked first time. He was a very happy customer, and I quit! I am better for it, and my boss got fired later that quarter! I have always believed in telling the Customer the Truth, whether the outcome be good or bad, for you or them. The Customer initially talked to a salesperson that had no clue, Best Buy hires high school age kids part-time because they do not have to pay them much money. I was a 40 some year old guy working part-time that did it because they begged me to come because the Tech Bench had no one there. They had no one there when I left either! They ended up closing the Tech Bench for 3 months before they could get someone from another Store to come over there and work. And that person didn't come until my boss was gone!!! My boss was the Store Manager! He is now pushing a broom at a Costco!

Yep, This kindof thing really cheeses off poorer salesmen, as they just cannot understand why the customers keep coming back asking for you, when you tell the truth you create a customer relationship rather than just shove them out the door with whatever c**p. they send friends and family.

My boss was the Store Manager! He is now pushing a broom at a Costco!

If it's a Costco in the San Diego area let me know so I can go there and throw some trash on the floor.

Cheating is ugly and totally against the spirit of BOINC and must not be rewarded. How the hell can anyone like W*** sleep at night or gain satisfaction from what he did?

How can any thief or hacker sleep at night? A lack of ethics. A lack of morals. He prolly sleeps very well.

Second, is in a litigous society such as we have today here in the US, one has to be mighty careful about crossing the line bewteen an opinion and libel. Lawyers are pretty creative when it comes to broadening the distribution of blame in such cases, disclaimers of responsibility not withstanding.

He would have the burden of proof to show that he was harmed financially by it. Until cobblestones represents cash that will never happen and no lawyer would touch it. In California if you file a frivolous lawsuit you'll be paying megabucks to the people you tried to sue.

For the owners of the computers where the rogue BOINC client was installed on, the cost of electricity is higher than else, so they can, in principle, sue the projects for being harmed financially? The projects received the results for their research and with this also eventual financial or personally (for the project managers with a better standing in the research world and with this some economically benefits) gain from it?

Just hypothetically, perhaps.

This is a nonsense thread. People should just vote with there feet and stop trying to foment world revolution, and poluting the Seti website. The issue at Preditor is simply not that important and there are plenty of other (similar) projects to contribute to.

People are voting with their feet... Unfortunately, they will soon be replaced by others who do not know what is going on there. This is not the first time nor is it likely to be the last, that the Admin at Predictor has acted in such a heavy handed and cavalier way towards volunteers that expressed dissatisfaction or pointed out failings of the projects administration. They would like us to just shut up and leave, if not happy, rather then remedy the situation. If the word is not put out to the rest of the community there will no reason to make changes and it will continue the status quo which reflects badly on Boinc as a whole.

The Windows comment is quite appropriate.
Yesterday morning I read a post where Braun said that he had new Linux and MacOS WU's ready to go, but was having problems with Windows.
He mentioned that he has 600 computers, with one running Windows.
Sound like he's crunching his own WU's on 599 machines--
while the members have none to crunch.

By yesterday afternoon I was getting 100% packet loss at 137.164.22.3.
My wife and I have been locked out of the entire predictor site;
can't even access our accounts--
or change teams.
