Personally, I think the BOINC wiki icon would be a better choice.
ok, i'll leave it be
if another boinc related search plugin comes along then i might change the icon to something else, but at present the BOINC Wiki plugin is the only one lol

Working like a charm for me, Lee! Nice job! As far as a suggestion, having the result page open in a new tab would make it easier to jump back and forth and cut and paste as needed. Maybe there's a FF setting that would cause that to happen... hmmm.. I'll have to snoop around. But overall, I give it 3 thumbs up.

ta,
as for opening new tabs, i'm sure there are "lite" versions of tab browsing extensions for just that, but i hightly recommend the Tab Mix Plus extension for all your tab browsing needs, there are enough options for anyone, and it works very well, but for your specific case of wanting searches to open in new tabs (that's the way i like it too) after installing the ext and obviously restarting firefox, open up the options for TMP (tools menu or extensions window) and go to the "events" section then click the "tab opening" tab, in the lower section on the tab there's some "open tabs from:" options, make sure "search bar" is ticked (and any others you want) and click ok (you may need to change other settings, or uninstall other extensions which might cause conflicts, to have things the way you like as tab mix plus covers everything you could want)
thumbs up for such a highly customisable browser :)

Now, is this where I plug my graphs???? ;)

sure is ;)
plug away dude
(seriously guys, his graphs are great :-D )

I tried the link for TabMix and it takes me to a PayPal page. Am I going crazy?

Kathryn

PS: Just tried the search and it's great. I know almost nothing about FF (only using it a few months now) and I was astonished that it installed automatically. I thought it was going to be a painful process :)

ah, that's probably because the forums don't handle https links properly, thanks for pointing it out (i just copy & pasted the URL and forgot to change it)

yea, search plugins are actually quite simple, just a small text file (with a .src extension) containing the info about how to search and an image file for the icon, that's it :)

Worked like a charm. And this one did it automatically too! I've definitely fallen in love with FF. Too bad I have to use IE at work.

Thanks!

BBCodeXtra us a good extension for our message boards here. It helps fill out things like italics, colors and url's. Here is a link if you want to give it a try.

Thanks for the tip of changing it to http. I was all over the place looking for the original link I found to BBCodeXtra. Then when I saw it didn't work I was all over the place again trying to find a different one that would work.

I've submitted an updated version, which interprets results for displaying in the sidebar a little differently. If you don't use the sidebar then don't worry, everything else will continue to work as normal, this only affects sidebar users.

Anyone who has problems using the sidebar in a few days please let me know, i've tested the new version quite a bit and i found no negative effects, my changes should make sidebar results more resiliant/reliable.

Firefox auto-checks every 7 days and will automatically get the new version, so there's no need to visit mycroft again to reinstall the plugin. If you want to know which version you've got then please ask, i'll be happy to explain :)

Just for the hell of it, i created one for boincstats, it can be found on the mycroft site
however this one doesn't work with the sidebar, because when i tried to make it compatible, it soon turned into a nightmare, and the output to the sidebar was a mess, with no easy solution,
so i thought it better to just leave it as a "tab only" search

does anyone have any suggestions/requests while i'm on a roll (it's pretty easy to create them actually)
doesn't even have to be BOINC related, can be anything

due to the recent news i've updated the boinc wiki search plugin to use the new URL (http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/)

this should be downloaded by firefox automatically before the original site expires, if it does not, then please let me know and i'll give instructions on how to remove the plugin, and reinstall it

for those familiar with firefox or wanting to try out the updated version, just find the "searchplugins" folder in your firefox profile folder, when firefox isn't running, delete the "boinc-wiki.src" and "boinc-wiki.gif" files
restart firefox and visit the mycroft site again to reinstall :)

Thanks Lee Carre.

That's another good one.

That will make it easy to look up other BOINCer's stats.

Lee.

I'll bet you would like the extension Aardvark. It is a strange extension that lets you see the different pieces of a web page and turn them on and off, among other things. On the website they have a way to test it out before you install it.

Another odd one is Nightly Tester Tools. It allows you to install and fix extensions that are not compatible with newer versions of Firefox. It came in handy when the best Firefox extension of them all Spellbound wasn't compatible with version 1.5.0.1.

I was lost without spell checking.

P.S. It sounds kind of dangerous but Nightly Tester Tools gives you an added option when installing incompatible extensions. If you have it installed and then try installing something like spellbound you will get a small box to check in the warning dialog box that tells you spellbound is not compatible and do you want nightly tester tools to override it or something like that. Once checked it will install anyways. Spellbound functions fine after that.

thanks, i didn't think about an internal/integrated spell checker for firefox (and as anyone who reads my posts can tell you, my spelling is rather poor lol)

hadn't heard of aardvark before, i hear a lot of good things about GreaseMonkey, but aardvark looks like it's a dedicated tool
although being a web designer my desire to fiddle with and correct sites will probably get in the way of browsing lol
thanks anyway

I can imagine a few uses for this, but adblock plus takes care the majority of things that i'd want to change (read as: remove) ;)

the tools will come in very handy, althought it's simple to change the max_version in the XPI file, it's still a pain having to open it up and fiddle with it

so there's the proof lol, there's an extension for nearly everything, i say nearly because i'm hoping to write one myself for a particular need i have; an interface to handle and export feeds to an external feed reader
but all in good time

I've been monitoring my various installations of firefox to see if they auto-update search engine plugins

so far none of them seem to have done it automatically, even thou the option is set to do so in the options

if you want to make sure you've got the latest search plugin then just visit mycroft again (using the links provided in previous posts) and just click the plugin you want, and it (the new version) will be installed over any existing version you might have, that's the simplest way i've found so far, however if anyone cares to differ on the matter of auto-updating, then please let me know

incase anyone is interested, i've been working on releasing new versions of the plugins so that when the sidebar is used, you'll have "next" and "previous" buttons which will show the next/previous page of results
also for the Wiki results i'll be working on allowing the user to choose how many results are returned (20, 50, 100 etc.)

I wonder if any of you guys might help me with a Firefox extention problem. After upgrading to version 1.5 some of the old extentions were outdated and I tried to update them but two didn't have any updates. These two are now stuck in the extention queue it seems. They're blocking other extentions to install. Click on thumbnail below for more info.

Do you know how to remove these extentions from blocking the queue - without uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox?

Nightly Tester Tools may be able to get them to work. After you install it you get the option to repair extensions that are not compatible. It sounds sort of risky but it has worked okay for me so far. I'm not sure if it will fix yours though.

If you use a lot of Mycroft search engines, there is a new extension that is very useful. Search Engine Ordering. You can alphabetize your search engines, drag and drop order, and right click to delete a search engine. Very slick. :)

Thanks for the tip on Nightly Tester Tools StokeyBob. I just ordinarily go into the .xpi and tell the plugin it's compatible with whatever version I just upgraded to. The NTT method sounds much easier.

Thanks for this tip, Stokeybob! It may very well be a valuable tool, but in this particular situation it doesn't help because it's also an extention and it just adds to the install queue... I also tried to reorder the queue by putting the broken extentions to the bottom, but that didn't work either... Se picture below.

I think I'll have to uninstall, cleanup and reinstall Firefox to fix this - unless somebody has a last minute tip of editing a file or something to get these out of the queue.

But it bothers me to think about that this thing can happen again with extentions in the future... I can be restrictive with what I install of course, but then again there's no guarantee the few I select will be OK either. Plus, extentions is one of the reasons I use Firefox and it'll be less useful without them.
