Thanks for all the support guys! I think we have a great little community going here, and I know those posts were getting under not only my, but others' skins. Of course, I really hope that all the BOINC newbies take the time to understand and enjoy BOINC, but inevitably we're going to get those that won't bother and hopefully they see this thread before they falsely assume anyone is going to feel sorry for them!

And a Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, (**insert what my lack of religious knowledge leaves out here :-), and all around best of the holiday season to all!

Wow Jeff. Very well thought out and stated. I happen to be one of the one in 10,000 people that has been having a problem since switching to BOINC. I'm taking your "one whiner/10,000 happily crunching people" ratio at face value; I haven't actually taken a survey. Not that I'm that smart, but I also don't think of myself as a complete idiot either. I just have been having some trouble configuring my SETI screensaver to run properly.
After reading some of the other postings (very helpful people, thank you very much), I was able to get SETI @ home working. The thing is, I'm glad I stumbled into one of the other threads before this one, or I would have given up. I suppose that no one would have cared if I left. I guess all of the tens of thousands of happily crunching people that you speak for would have realized that I am the problem, and that I suck.
To anyone who is having problems setting up BOINC and happens to read this post: don't give up. Don't listen to people who say you suck because you are having problems with the program. Remember, for every whiner that says you suck, there are 10,000 (give or take) people who would actually try to help you out!

I'd say you missed the whole point here. You did what any reasonable person would do and that was to look around, read about and possibly explore a little bit. Sorry if I missed the point. And I also apologize to everyone if I sounded sarcastic. It's just that while I searched for help I was this close (holding fingers one millimeter apart) to quitting. From my own frustrated, ready-to-toss-my-computer-through-the-window point of view, I just wanted to let people know that there is hope for them to figure BOINC out. After all, if I can do it, anyone can!

Sorry again for disturbing everyone's silent night. Merry Christmas to all!

I'm glad you posted what you did dauph - It helped point out what Mr & Mrs Anon mentioned: That the original post was to discourage disgruntled BOINC newcomers from posting "BOINC sucks, I'm leaving just try and stop me" threads. Of course I encourage any newcomers to read around and ask for help! Any newbies reading this can be assured that I'm not trying to be hostile - These boards are generally very friendly and always welcoming of newcomers and I consider myself no exception.
