I originally posted this in the Science Forum here, but thought it might be of interest to people here in Number Crunching:

Here's a relatively new article I hadn't noticed before, It may be of interest to some here:

A Conversation with David Anderson

And a short passage from the article:
Q Where is BOINC headed over the next few years?

DA BOINC has several long-term goals. First, we would like to increase participation by two orders of magnitude, so that BOINC runs on most of the computers in the world. This means making it easier to participate. We’re working on support for account management systems that let people browse and sign up for projects with a few mouse clicks. Second, we would like to see hundreds of projects in all areas of science. This will require us to reduce the system administration and database expertise needed to create and operate projects. Finally, we would like BOINC to handle a wider range of applications, including those that have very large data sets or that require low-latency communication. Some nice mechanisms have been developed in the context of file-sharing and instant-messaging networks, such as BitTorrent, jxta, and Jabber, and we hope to incorporate aspects of these into BOINC.

Sometimes I think we are alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we are not. In either case the idea is quite staggering.

I hope you're not expecting me to provide some well thought out and reasoned comment!

I'm not that intelligent :)

I just thought that the future of BOINC as envisioned by the Seti Head-Honcho himself might be of interest to people who use BOINC.

Roll BOINC Credits :)

Actually, as it is PBS, the language is a little bit different...

The BOINC Chit-Chat hour is provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation (slackers who suckle the teet of the taxpayers). Corporate sponsorship provided by Sun: Old boxes who run old boxes. And by Micro$oft...Micro$oft, substandard software for a substandard world. What do YOU need to patch today. And by Conoco...Conoco, at least the Chinese didn't buy us. And support from viewers like you...suckers.

Stewie: So, is there any tread left on the tires? Or at this point would it be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway?

There is a difference between saying "we're adopting BitTorrent" and "there are some good ideas that we might be able to adopt from P2P networking."

I'm wondering if this P2P stuff might have something to do with the fabled shared-storage-on-users-drives that doesn't seem to have materialised (except for CPDN, and they're only using the available storage capacity for dead crunched wu's that'll never be looked at again).

You've never seen a signature with scrollbars? ;-)

I'm personally waiting for someone to link to a banner ad in their signature, and then get flamed to a crisp.

I have actually seen sigs that might need a scrollbar! Plus the ones that some people hardcode into their posts!

Thank God for Adblock!

If Dr Dave has such an important view, I have to ask why he never posts here!

Without an exception, the other BOINC projects I'm running, the "person in charge" does appear and post on the forums!

Does Dr Dave put on his "Boinc hat" when it's a seti problem and put on his "Seti hat" when it's a Boinc problem?

I think Dr Dave is just contained in his Ivory Tower and won't lower himself to talk to the masses...

That may be exactly why other Boinc projects are running better than seti/boinc!

Dr Dave is a very busy man. He not only works directly on some of the development, but also oversees much of the adminstration, fund raising, publicity, etc. While it would be enjoyble if would post here once in a great while, he does deserve some time off. Like many adminstrators, he has to sub-delegate some of his duties to others. Can't be everywhere all the time.

Cut the man some slack. Most of us here could not work his schedule, or accomplish what he has accomplished.

So why is that different from the folks in charge of other BOINC projects? Why is that an excuse?

Not "everywhere at all the time" but maybe HERE when then there's been a 1 week outage!

Yup.. I couldn't work his schedule. I'm awake by six and wouldn't know what I'd do if I didn't have to be at work until 10! :)
