Hmm...I have noticed that people seem to be getting ever angrier and almost violent as this backlog continues. I ain't no peace lover. But, when has a million people yelling over one another ever led to a decent solution. It doesn't...ever. I don't really give a crap if this causes anyone to flame me, but all of us really need to calm down. The ONLY people who really should have a big problem with the backlog are those who are spending large amounts of money to keep the program running. As it has been said before. The backlog will clear. It's going to clear whenever it can. It's going to clear whether or not people yell and scream. There's no reason to be calling anyone morons, or ridiculing actual 'useful' suggestions. FLAME AWAY! I'd like to know how many people are sick of the attitudes here. And yes, I know I can leave if I don't like it. But, I'm not going to leave and none of you are going to make me. What's everyones opinion? Open the gates! I'm here to STAY!

No flame here. Although I'm not sure this is a "new" development :) Maybe yet another peak though. Basically any time something big goes wrong with the project tempers seem to flare. Some people accuse the project admins of being inept, others suggest fixes and some say "they know it is broken, they will fix it". Somewhere in there things usually end up getting a little too hot. Then you get people jumping down each others throats and the whole thing goes to hell in a handbasket :) I do feel sorry for new members who come into the middle of it. I don't think these message boards are overly "inviting" even though they should be. That has actually been a common complaint among people on the classic message boards.

I guess it is hard to fight human nature :(

I see two parts of the problem - one is as you describe, the shear volume of posts and tone of some of them make _everyone_ more "edgy" and likely to "flame"... and two, because everyone is seeing so many flames, they are taking offense at comments that really weren't MEANT as flames, and "retaliating", and it gets out of hand...

I was "short" earlier with someone who started an entire new thread just to make a suggestion that a) belonged in one of several existing threads, and b) had already been made, discussed, commented on by Matt, and dismissed. But otherwise, I've tried very hard not to say ANYTHING to anyone who _isn't_ helpful, and to thank those who are, and to just ignore any flames directed at me.

People who don't understand the problem don't bother me - I was there too short a time ago myself. People who REFUSE to understand the problem, or claim there are problems where there aren't, deserve one reasoned reply from someone, then ignore them and let them rant to themselves all they want. Answering in even a reasonable form just seems to encourage them.

I'm a "noob" here, but was a moderator on another board for over five years...

So what triggered Shaun? I've never read such a weird post. Maybe that pseudo-doc on the other threads makes house calls?

I'm not sure and I've been looking. I hate missing out on the good stuff. I think this thread what did I do wrong is the straw that broke the camels back.

It sounds like someone wants to be a journalist (with a very small 'j') and report on the demise of SETI at the hands of the government fools (someone else's assessment) who funded it and are now disappointed at the failure of it (again, someone else's assessment).

(begin rant mode, half throttle)

Whatta bunch of whiny little techno-know-nothings that wouldn't get off their asses parked front of their TVs to walk ten meters to save their own grandmother from a burning trailer (but they'd bitch about how long it took the fire company to get there from across town after someone ELSE called 911).

(end rant mode)

Cats have an affinity for burying turds like that...anyone have a few metric tons of kitty litter they're not doing anything with?

Stewie: So, is there any tread left on the tires? Or at this point would it be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway?

Hehehe, I got a cat, i can start savin the litter for ya and mail it to ya, but it'll cost ya! :-) J/K

As far as stayin on topic here. This is nothing new. Every time an outage occur's, you get the whiners, the complainers, the bitching, and moaning and groaning. You can't please everyone. They just like to point fingers, blame UCB that the program isn't 100% error free, and its not working 100% of the time. They just like to add to the pile.

Although, you do have a great number of people who love to offer assistance, help one another, and not do the above, and thats what makes it fun. :-) Keep on crunchin, the guys and gals (dunno if there are any that work at UCB for SETI or not) are working on it, things take time, and as always there will always be problems.

Perhaps you are referring to my 'perhaps this is too obvious' thread when you say you were "short".

I have to say that I did search other threads before I posted and couldn't find anything relevant. Perhaps that's because these pages are full of people being short with each other.

It's interesting isn't it? When I posted I was particularly keen to make sure that my thread was not critical in any way of the project. I just wanted to make a helpful suggestion. As I have said I did look for previous posts and found none, yet I still attracted a "short" reply.

I understand that tempers are short and that there is a lot of uncalled for critisism floating about but surely "short" posts are just going to make the situation worse. Personaly I would have found it more helpful (if that's what you were intending to be) if you had just referred me to one of the existing posts. :)

Hmm...I have noticed that people seem to be getting ever angrier and almost violent as this backlog continues. ...

The "Tech News" author has made a beautifully careful and thorough description there (August 22, 2005 - 18:00 UTC). All in very readable terms for the "not-so-techy". Looks like the Devs very definitely keep an interest in all the users and respond to peoples' perceptions and passions.

Hopefully, the clear information will allow people to relax a little amidst all the FUDD.

Happy crunchin',

My apologies for taking my frustration of that moment with others out on you. In my mind at the time, the "short" answer had two purposes; kill the thread quickly so it would drop to the bottom, and tell you that a search would find what you were referencing if you were truly interested.

Thread "Penguin doing too much?" - http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=18355 and thread "Penguin's new status" - http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=18594 and original thread "Status Page Not Updated in 6 Hours?!!!" - http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=18291

Your suggestion/question itself was not "stupid", it was perfectly valid, and the wording was not critical in any way. Knowing however that Penguin had been discussed over and over again, as had the WFV (not WVF) situation, I made the assumption that you had not done a search. Again, my fault for assuming, and my apologies. Searches are always iffy beasts, and the abilities here to do one are extremely limited.

My only suggestions to you, to help avoid a "short" answer from someone else next time, would be when stating something that you acknowledge could be "obvious", include in the message what searches you have run looking to see if it has already been discussed; and "pick a thread, any thread" that is close to on-topic, rather than starting a new thread if at all possible. Generally around here a new thread is started seemingly about half the time by someone who primarily wants to "bash" or "flame" rather than help, and the first post in any thread is viewed with suspicion. Sad, but true.

Keep on crunchin!

Hmm...I have noticed that people seem to be getting ever angrier and almost violent as this backlog continues. I ain't no peace lover.

The problem is one of expectations and beliefs. There are 3 "poles" or "camps" here, the "cheerleaders", the neutral, and, um, hmmm... well, they have never have been given a name. :)

The neutrals are, probably for the most part, silent readers. And probably silent because they have nothing to say, and or don't want to say it because of the expected/anticipated reaction.

The other two groups tend to want to convince the other camp/group that they are mistaken. Which, in most cases is probably futile. Each side's "facts" is the other sides nonesense. As hard as I try to stay neutral, I know that I am considered by many to be firmly in the "cheerleader" camp. Not that I am ashamed of that, I think BOINC does very well on its own merit.

However, we also have those that would rather "stir the pot" than accomplish anything useful.
