Personal background |
A psychologist once told me that the way to find out what a person really thinks is important in life is simply to say "Tell me about yourself". The response will be in their order of importance - age, family, job, wealth etc. Let's see now: Well I am close to retirement and that is a big step in my life. But that's a temporary hurdle. The enduring element of my life is, no doubt, my family. Married thirty four years, two children both early thirties. I'm very proud of both of them and my wife. I am a software designer. In the industry since 1963 and am blessed to have enjoyed practically every single day of my working life. Hobbies? Writing (Sci Fi), sport (I live in the UK and support Manchester City - yes there is another team in Manchester), astronomy, reading (Sci Fi). Politics - left of centre. Religion - atheist. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Does extraterrestrial life exist? Statistically, I just have to say yes. There are so many galaxies, let alone stars, that just by sheer chance life must have evolved elsewhere. Will we discover it? Given enough time and effort we may detect some signal. Let's hope we find some remnants of microbial life on Mars. Benefits? The attainment of knowledge and some extra wonder in our lives. Dangers? Can't think of one. Should we transmit a beacon? If Einstein was right, and he has been so far, then the speed-of-light limit to travel will prevent any aliens visits, friendly or not, so yes let's transmit. As to the information to send - well we have enough difficulty understanding each other on Earth - so the information should be as simple as possible, maybe just some kind of number sequence. Just so they know we can count. Why do I run SETI? Well I have been blessed to have lived during the start of the space age and I find it awe inspiring. I would love to be around when we detect extraterrestrial life and SETI is just my way of helping. The project? Brilliant. Suggestions? Don't stop. |
