Hmm, whose ISP has ever said "Oh sorry for all the downtime, we'll give you some money back!" ?? ;)

Hi Steve,
I just called myself after sending an email, and they gave me a similar response also adding "things should be back to normal soon". I hope not...that will mean more down time.
LOL

Maybe they shut Cogent down for the weekend to save energy? Just kidding, of course. Down again. Running out of work for my computers, yet I set the contact time with BOINC on 5 days. But, I only get a 2-3 unit cache each time.

Actually, my DSL was out for a few days and my provider voluntarily gave me a credit on my bill. So, it does happen.

They have the nerve to state on the company home page how reliable their network is ! Up times should be transposed and then taken with a pinch of salt!
Maybe if ALL of us took the time to write a short email to Cogent informing them of this problem then it may be repaired before Monday.

While it might be fun to hammer on Cogent, it probably won't do any actual good, and it may use up a whole bunch of goodwill between Cogent and Berkeley.

For the most part, we are not Cogent customers.

While it may be fun to call, it probably won't make things go any faster, and if we (the users) all call and complain on Cogent's dime, they could decide that this customer (SETI) is not worth having.

I don't see them on the Sponsors page. If they are sponsors the must be pretty minor ones.

Give 'em hell.

Message 108548 - Posted: 7 May 2005, 15:37:50 UTC

I spoke with cogent at 11:30 EDT asking for any kind of update or info..evidently the number posted on here is the network backbone operations department and they were not too pleased that John Q. Citizen called to ask the status of the outage. Not happy at all. After I explained I thougt it was a customer service number and not operations the rep was kinder though refused to divulge any info as to the relationship with Seti or if there was indeed a problem. I explained as the previous poster did that it's best to leave it in the hands of the pro's and not hinder their relationship with SETI. We can do no good calling their ops center and complaining..they know if a problem exists and they will fix it when they fix it.
I just wanted to mention I have used Classic for over 2 years...am not interested in data analysis for projects other then SETI right now...what if any advantages are there to switching to BOINC at this point in time. I use spy, and monitor and they handle all my analysis and acquistion/distribution needs. THanks

Just leave them with the impression that you might work for one of - and have some influence in - their major corporate accounts and are a touch concerned at the service levels...

Just to pickup on your second part, remember that BOINC can allow SETI (or any project) to issue new and modified science applications automatically. This can be done simply and without needing to persuade the user to download and install a new application.
In the little over 6 years SETI has been going, the only releases I recall were security related. Getting users to update for any other reason would be difficult to say the least. Your point about being quite happy with classic is demonstration of just this.

I finally got SETI@home/BOINC running under HP-UX and now such a outage. That's too bad. I hope it will work ASAP.

Anybody have some change? It seems we need to deposit some more coins into the fiber optics metering box...

Are cogent shares dropping on the stock market yet?

98SE XP2500+ @ 2.1 GHz Boinc v5.8.8

And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer.

It's not so much "leave it to the pros" as "we are not their customers"

If everyone called Cogent we'd be launching a Denial of Service attack against their NOC personnel.

We don't want to do that, we want them to work the problem.

Besides, the outage could be on the campus side of the circuit.

I appreciate the desire to call Cogent and complain, but all parties involved are aware of the problem and are looking into it. That's all we know so far, and basically all we can do is wait.

It might be worth telling Cogent (or telling CNS to tell Cogent) that a number of us out here in cruncher-land also buy bandwidth from companies like (gasp!) Cogent.

I understand that it may not be their fault, it could be an SBC problem, or something broken on Campus, or the CNS link from campus to the exchange point.

... and it may be partially finding the folks that are on call and interrupting their saturday.
