Starting this thread to discuss the relationship between the Government of Mainland China and how it's interaction with two of it's closest neighbors affects the World.

I was moved to this action by today's news from the Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam that she agreed with the Beijing Leadership that a new 'Security Law' will be implemented to "guard against, stop and punish any separatism, subversion of the national regime, terrorist group activities and such behaviours that seriously harm national security”.
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/05/22/asia-pacific/politics-diplomacy-asia-pacific/hong-kong-security-law-asap-lam/#.Xsf8bDl7m00

IMHO this is the beginning of the next 'Tienanmen Square' and will destroy the city-state's role as 'Financial Capitol of Asia'. That would seem to be indicated by the crash seen today in the Hang Seng Index

Beijing, whether responsible for the World Pandemic or not, has shown by it's actions in the last 6 months a total disregard for the well being and freedom of the rest of the world by concealing information and outright aggression. This is just the latest offense perpetrated by the regime following threats against Australia, Taiwan and, of course, the US.

The response of the people of Hong Kong will be interesting to observe in the coming weeks and months.

Tear gas was fired as protesters ignored rules on social distancing to demonstrate against Beijing’s plan to impose security legislation that they see as a threat to freedoms.

I have to wonder why this subject suddenly turns up now, after all this time, and not almost 2 years ago when these things started to happen.

Methinks Beijing thinks the rest of the world is so preoccupied with the pandemic that it does not have the band width to deal with it.

But evil has been going on in the U.S. for hundreds of years also and looks at the results today.

What is the difference?

I'm going to ask a question.
Have any of the contributors to this thread actually been to China, including Hong Kong in the last ten years, or is your impression of China gained from the media in your respective countries?

I asked this previously. The answer is a resounding "No". personally I've been as recently as this past October, and have made 4 trips there in the last 3 years.

no country is without sin, but the thread will continue on with whataboutisms from all sides.

what about China's treatment of Uyghurs?
what about US's treatment of black people?
what about Australia's treatment of aborigines?
what about ...

China warns against travel to Australia, citing discrimination

China advised the public to avoid traveling to Australia on Friday, citing racial discrimination and violence in connection with the coronavirus pandemic.

"There has been an alarming increase recently in acts of racial discrimination and violence against Chinese and Asians in Australia, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic," the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in a statement. It did not give any specific examples of such discrimination or violence.

Apparently the Communist Chinese Government has stolen another thing from the US. This time from the Radical Left.

"When you have no counter argument in a debate, accuse your opponent of racism."

China has also stopped purchases of Beef and Barley from Australia in retaliation for widespread calls for an investigation into the origins and concealment of information relating to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Funny how our problem with China started when that far right racist U.S. warmongering nutter Pompeo was here visiting our right wing P.M. and then suddenly our P.M. started firing his month off at China while sounding just like that U.S. lunatic (he certainly didn't sound like himself) don't you think?

The backlash that our P.M. got here at home from all directions over it and with the repercussions from it I now bet that he wishes that he hadn't listened to that yankee nutter B.S. at all (he certainly doesn't like talking about that subject now).

US offers to build UK's 5G and nuclear stations

America has offered to build Britain's 5G and nuclear power stations so that the "coercive and bullying" relationship with China can end, Mike Pompeo has said.

In a statement released yesterday the US Secretary of State said America stood with its “allies and partners against the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) coercive bullying tactics”, as he sighted reports that Beijing had threatened to punish HSBC and “break commitments to build nuclear power plants in the United Kingdom unless London allows Huawei to build its 5G network”.
Huawei: America accuses China of attempting to bully the UK

The reassessment follows new sanctions in the US which would prohibit the Chinese telecommunications company from using any computer chips designed by American firms, and not just those manufactured in the US.
Buy our kit from coercive and bullying China, or buy our kit from coercive and bullying USA? Decisions, decisions.

Wait - didn't we once build our own kit?

!!!...........a realization SLOWLY dawning the world over...........

When you purchase another Country's/Culture's/Government System's technology, you are tied to that source for maintenance, repair, upgrades and expansion. A lesson that has been unintentionally (?) taught by the Covid crisis. This is also especially true with "defense" systems. The members of NATO are pretty much stuck with US aircraft and weapons manufacturers and the client states of Russia and China are dependent on staying in the good graces of those governments.

"If you sell it or use it here, you must build it here", should be the new world motto.
