I was watching YouTube and learned about Seti@home.
I am on Fedora 30 and it my have boinc installed by default but I am not sure.
So, how do I get to contributing to Seti@home

I failed with the download shell script but found a web page https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Fedora so I believe it installed and I have set boinc to run at boot. It appears to be running now. However, I don't believe I have it set up correctly. I do need some help.
I wish to have boinc use one of my two Radeon wx 5100 pros I'm not using it directly so it might as well do some work. I have no clue at the moment on how to designate boinc to use gpu and use only that specific gpu
So I am working on how to set up accounts. the Boinc manager says it's not connected to the core client.
Okay well this is a work in progress. I have an 8 core AMD 9590, 32 GB of ram, all the disk space necessary and a AMD Radeon WX 5100 Pro not doing much. Let us put it to work and see if ET is phoning :) ( my attempt at humor )
So how do I set up the configuration and how do I get Boinc to use the GPU.

I believe I managed to get it going!
I am running the seti@home.
I also created a different account in the process of getting up and running. Seemed to be best to follow along.
I see that it is running all 8 cores at 100%
I am not sure if it is using the Radeon wx 5100s I have two installed. I do hope it will use them. I just watch movies and surf the web :) I have normal heat from the first in line 5100 and the second has actually gone cold. That is unusual.

Perhaps the Moderators will simply delete these posts.
All went well following the web page and rebooting after writing all the configuration data.
It was rather painless once I stopped panicking
I'll look into getting it to use the Radeon wx 5100. Why not.

This Boinc is looking like great software! I see every detail of my system and it knows i have two GFX cards! That is so cool! I was worried I would have to do surgery.

Okay So the moral of this story is follow the web page, install from the Fedora repositories. configure exactly as the web page says. Save that long password someplace you can cut and past from easy. And reboot to get it all going right after it's all done. The Script downloaded didn't work for me but hey maybe I didn't understand how to do that right.

You must have two accounts now. The one you posted with shows no computers. Try and login to BOINC with the account that shows your computers.

Without anyone being able to see your computers, no one can help you with troubleshooting or configuration.

The AMD cards can only run the SoG app and that requires OpenCL drivers which are not usually installed by any of the AMD driver packages.

This is the account I was prompted to create when i finally got the install going.
I let the SETI@home run over night and it has work to go out. Sadly I turned on my VPN after the BOINC started and it says "Notice from "BOINC
BOINC can't access Internet - check network connection or proxy configuration." So there is work to go out but I can't get it to send. I currently have no remedy for when this happens.

Also I have no need for the other account so we can delete that one. I'm just so green. It is exciting to join up.

I see work returned on your host now that is only two hour from current time. So assume you got the comms through the VPN figured out. There is a setup configuration for proxy server in the Manager Options menu. Also if you have a firewall on your VPN connection you need to let out Port 31416 so that BOINC can communicate with the client and the servers.

[Edit] I also don't see any sign of gpu tasks yet in your onboard cache. You probably still haven't loaded the correct OpenCL drivers. I see OpenCL 1.1 in your host bio but normally the OpenCL drivers are identified with 1.2 version. The POCL drivers do not work on Seti. There are several AMD driver packages and many others have issues with the OpenCL drivers. I have this info from someone over at Einstein that goes through the AMD OpenCL installation steps from the AMD docs.

I dropped the VPN and then it upload so that is how that went. I will research further on that. I see a few more tasks are ready to upload again. I believe in using VPN, my ISP, well ... Not my friend let us say.

Um.. On the OpenCL 1.2, there isn't any official support, from what I can tell, for Fedora these days. 1.1 is the latest for Fedora apparently. Ubuntu I read, appears to be supported with 1.2 and all AMD/Drivers but not bleeding edge Fedora. That is what I understand from trying to learn and write for OpenCL. Lots of work to keep up with new Fedora releases.
So yeah, I think all is well except for the automatic network connection and using these wonderful scientific type graphic cards.
I'm open to suggestions on the OpenCL!! I'd love to be able to write and compile OpenCL. You see like the Collatz Conjecture Challenge I work with not just [3x+1,x/2] ( the brackets are my notation for cycle is all) I also explore all [3x+d,x/2] I have a candidate that could have a cycle size of over a quadrillion elements. Yeah that is just the size of the cycle. There really isn't any way to parallellize that so it will benefit if I could run it on one of the gfx cards.
Well there I go chatting away.
So yeah any help with the OpenCL would be heaven.

Can't help with Fedora. I have only Ubuntu experience. It seems Fedora has its own ecosystem and way of doing things fairly different from Debian distros.

Hey thanks for your help. Sometimes stress causes me problems. Now that you know what i just went through with OpenCL I was feeling stressed when i tried to use the download script to install Seti@home and it resulted in fail.
Anyway, IBM looks to have bought or is buying Red Hat. Maybe Fedora will get OpenCL 1.2 at some point..
I have never attempted to run virtual machine so that stresses me. But, I understand I could run Ubuntu or a pay for Red Hat subscription again. Those guys at Red Hat hate dealing with newbie problems even when you pay. I don't blame them.

Yeah, I just read the news about IBM buying Red Hat. I think in the end that is going to be a positive outcome for Fedora. IBM is very active in the Linux space. They are constantly submitting new code for Linux. Their Clear Linux distro is the fastest out there with the most highly optimized code.

Linux sure isn't going away any time soon. The apparent focus for the merger seems to be cloud storage/computing.
I agree with you. It should be a net positive with IBM.
I just checked out Fedora's Virtual system "Boxes." Very easy. Installed Ubuntu (live). So some issues to figure out but getting access to the GFX cards is very attractive.
I selected the (live) but I could have installed the server. Any suggestions? I believe I can simply delete VMs

Can't help there. I never played with any VM's. I only understand the concept and never dealt with the actualities.

Our mission objective is high output participants and high output, multi-gpu hosts who strive to maximize their contribution to the project, both through hardware and monetary gifts to the project for keeping the lights on and providing the server hardware for the project. We also have the application developers that provide the science apps for the project. Most of the team has converted over to Linux to run the CUDA9 or CUDA10 application we have developed which are the current best performing applications. Our Team grew out of the early Lunatics Team that developed the science apps of ten years ago. The Windows stock apps are the products of the Lunatics Team. But the Linux apps outperform the Windows apps by 4X to 10X now.
