Happy Anniversary! On this date in 1999, SETI@home came online. Since then millions of our volunteers have helped us sift through petabytes of data from multiple radio telescopes. ET still hasn't shown up to the party. We're not discouraged. We're able to examine less than a tenth of a percent of the radio spectrum, over only 1/3 of the sky and a limited number of additional stars. But our capabilities are increasing every day. In 1999 it took up to a week to process a single workunit on a home PC. Now, on a machine with a GPU, it might only take a few minutes to do a far more detailed and more sensitive analysis. Who knows what the next 20 years will bring? @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) ![]() |

Congrats! Even though ET has not shown up, it is a endeavor worth the hours of CPU and GPU time. |

Keep it up! You never know what might be out there. Hey,I have a question. There use to be a SETI screen saver that had some nice graphs all going up and down with all sorts of different data and it would rotate with a star field in the background. I really liked that...but I have not seen that for a long time.....there is no SETI screen saver anymore, and there has not been one for a long time. What happened to it? PLEASE bring it back! I really enjoyed it and I MISS IT!!!! |

Keep it up! . . If I remember correctly that screensaver is disabled when certain choices are made in the host set up. Is it when GPU/Anonymous is active? . . But congratulations on 20 years SETI. And yes, the power available now is mind boggling compared to that when the project started. There are many hosts working furiously now that can complete a WU in less than 1 minute. Even my modest units are taking only minutes to complete most tasks on GPUs and generally less than one hour even on the CPUs. But so many stars, and just us relative few, there is always hope we will get lucky. Stephen :) Stephen ? |

The screen saver is still there. But since nobody uses CRT display any more, the operating systems don't really prioritize keeping screen savers functioning. And as operating systems have gotten more security conscious they don't seems to want to put in the effort to support 3rd party screen savers that they fear may do dangerous things. I find that on my home Windows 10 box, the screen saver works about half the time. The next update may break it entirely. On Macintosh, we made an update a while back that was supposed to fix the screen saver. I've heard from some people that it does, and others that it doesn't. If you use the BOINC Manager, the "show graphics" menu item (or button in the advanced view) still seems to work if you are jonesing for graphics. @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) ![]() |

Congrats on 20 years! Dr. Korpela, I think you make a good point in the progress you and your team has made with distributed computing in that time. Although we are still searching, hopefully each year we are able to cast out a bigger and bigger net. Seti@home classic: 1,456 results, 1.613 years CPU time |
