US taxpayers contribute almost $ 100,000 a minute to modernize the country's nuclear weapons. This is what ICAN - the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons - writes in a report released this week. The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize 2017.
ICAN states that they have documents showing that about 50 US universities receive funding, access to research facilities and career opportunities in return to support the "nuclear weapons complex".

In the United States, theTrump Administration has expanded plans to upgrade the nation’s nuclear weapons arsenal.
Over the next ten years, the Congressional Budget Office estimates U.S. taxpayers will pay nearly $500 billion to maintain and modernize their country’s nuclear weapons arsenal, or almost $100,000 per minute.
A separate estimate brings the total over the next 30 years to an estimated $1.7 trillion.
In a July 2019 report, National Nuclear Security Administrator Lisa Gordon-Haggerty wrote, “The nuclear security enterprise is at its busiest since the demands of the Cold War era.”

Deputy Prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson files the preliminary investigation against Julian Assange on suspected rape. New hearings have been held during the summer, but the evidence is not enough, she said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Once again, the preliminary investigation against Julian Assange is closed. Deputy Prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson resumed it last spring at the request of the plaintiff's assistant, after Assange left Ecuador's embassy and was arrested by British police.
According to Persson, Assange and the plaintiff have given consistent information in some parts and completely different information in others. The prosecutor wants to stress that it is not the task of the plaintiff that caused the investigation to be closed.
- The plaintiff is credible and her information is reliable. But the supporting evidence is not enough. It has not failed her tasks, but the supporting evidence has weakened, says Eva-Marie Persson.
The evidence is weakened by the time factor
One of the causes of the weakened evidence is the time factor.
- It's been nine years. Time is a player in this. The oral evidence has weakened as a long time has elapsed. The memory fades for natural reasons, says Persson.
SVT News reported in September this year that seven new witness hearings were held during the summer, of which two witnesses had not been heard before. One of the new witnesses has been heard in Denmark, says Persson.
- My assessment is that all investigative measures have been taken, but the supporting evidence is not sufficient.
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is now in a high-security prison in London, pending court to decide whether to extradite to the United States, where he is suspected of violating the spy law. We Scandinavian people already do have a high proficiency in the English language. But that doesn't mean that we stopped talking Swedish, Danish or Norwegian. And there are some here that speak Swedish but not having a high proficiency in English. If you ask a Swede what "Purchase approved" means you wouldn't get many correct answers:)

Government by tweet, again (where did we learn that from?): the wording appears in the second tweet by our current Home Secretary, Priti Patel.

But both the law, and the timing, are far more complicated than that.

In 2012, Khan was sentenced to indeterminate detention for "public protection" with a minimum jail term of eight years after being convicted for his part in a plot to bomb the London Stock Exchange.

This sentence would have allowed him to be kept in prison beyond the minimum term.

But in 2013, the Court of Appeal quashed the sentence, replacing it with a 16-year-fixed term of which Khan should serve half in prison. He was released on licence in December 2018.

The Court of Appeal would have known, very clearly, exactly what their replacement sentence would entail: eight years behind bars, followed by eight years on licence - and subject to immediate recall to prison without a further court hearing for any breach of that licence.

Boris Johnson appears to be calling for a determinate prison term, with no subsequent monitoring or potential for recall to prison. I imagine that the Court of Appeal would have set to original term to eight years under that regime: nothing would have been gained, and a lot of potential could have been lost.

The original sentence to "indeterminate detention for public protection" was introduced by a Labour Government, but repealed by David Cameron's Conservative Government in 2012.
