There still is the 16C/32T Ryzen 3000 model to debut. I predict it won't show up till later this year. I still think Threadripper 3000 will appear eventually but not until next year first or second quarter. I know I have seen rumors of the 16c/32t Ryzen but given the high model # of the 12c/24t "3900x" I have to wonder where it will fit in? I can understand that if AMD were to announce anything like the 16c/32t Ryzen it would depress the 12c/24t (3900x) sales in July seriously. Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

The 16C/32T SKU was supposed to slot in at Ryzen R9-3850X in the pre-release rumors. It was supposed to be a 135W TDP product. So maybe it will launch as the R9-3990X or R9-3950X. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Read a news story that quoted the AMD CEO as saying the ThreadRipper is not going away. Something about a 64 core version.... what my memory says (but don't quote me) that the 2920x/2950x would basically go away as models because whatever model it is called, the Am4 socket 16c/32t "IS coming". @Jsm, I see your Threadripper 2990x RAC is running at 38k + and your cpu tasks are ranging from just above 1 hour to about an hour and a half. How many threads are you running now? ==================== I was looking at your Ryzen 7 1800x's and it occurred to me that you might be able to speed up those systems by switching to something called the "lunatics distro" (Windows only). I am pretty sure that has a faster cpu app. You would lose the Seti screen saver though. Tom ps. Gtx 1060 3GB's used are pretty cheap on eBay and run a gpu task in about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes under Tbars All-in-One. Even one would possibly double your ThreadRipper RAC :) A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

Here's an update comparing the latest for Windows vs Linux on Threadripper: Linux Still Yields Better Multi-Threaded Performance On AMD Threadripper Against Windows 10 May 2019 Update Curious whether the recent Microsoft Windows 10 Version 1903 (May 2019 Update) improved the multi-threaded performance at all for the likes of the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX, I recently carried out some benchmarks looking at Windows 10 1903 against the former Windows 10 Version 1809 release benchmarked against both Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS and the latest Ubuntu 19.04... Some rather interesting results there... A good question is why such a difference? The OS should be such a low overhead so as to make no noticeable difference... Or? Happy fast crunchin'! Yeah, you're probably right. I don't think the new boards will be at the same introductory MSRP of the last generation. Most boards are adding more VRM stages to handle the high core count cpus and the fan over the chipset adds to the cost. The board material itself is actually going to be a major cost increase because if now needs to handle PCI Gen. 4 clock speeds. So all the added or upgraded bill of materials almost has to increase the board prices. Saving grace is that AMD boards traditionally have cost 2/3 of the price of Intel boards. So might have some leeway to keep board costs still below Intel. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

While mucking around in my ASROCK bios mb (which I am running my 2400G on) I noticed it has the ability to limit the power level the cpu can run at. Makes you wonder if you put in say the 3900x (12c/24t) and limit the power to 65 watts will it boot and/or run :) It is a B450 Pro+ Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

The BIOS just lets you override the builtin default power targets that the cpu announces to the BIOS and motherboard. Of course you can either raise or lower the builtin power targets of Ryzen. You can achieve much greater clocks in XFR2 when you change the limits. You can also limit the power targets which clamps down harder on the default power boosts in XFR2 so both your clocks and power thresholds are limited. Could be used to stabilize an all core clock rate much lower than what the cpu would want to do boosting only a few cores. All it takes is a few new numbers input the BIOS settings. The competition isn't sitting still either. Intel is at Computex with some of their Ice Lake 10nm chips. No real details yet on what they're called, but apparently the integrated Iris graphics are 2x as powerful as the present ones, they can play games comfortably at 1080p. It's got integrated Thunderbolt 3 in the CPU, as well as Wifi6. want to hear more, watch this video from Linus Sebastian. And posted this here, because I don't want to make a separate thread on Intel CPUs. :) |

I have stabilised on 50% because 45% gives a ratio of .9 and 55% gives 1.13 but 50% gives nearly 1.6. Unfortunately I suffered a complete blank screen shutdown during the tests and all attempts to scrutinise the logs do not show the cause. I had to power off and on to restart. This upset the tests and then this was followed by my ISP losing connectivity to the world for half a day and then a few days later lost all dns service - all of which meant that the 2990 used up its backup saved tasks quickly while the two 1800X carried on. I now have incontrovertible evidence of 'cool n quiet' on the ASUS Rog Extreme and will share this when I sort out how. Following your suggestion to buy an used 3gb 1060 I have one on order. Under Ubuntu do I just plug this into a PCIE slot and it will be automatically recognised by Ubuntu at restart and by Boinc as it re-runs benchmarks? jsm |

Following your suggestion to buy an used 3gb 1060 I have one on order. Under Ubuntu do I just plug this into a PCIE slot and it will be automatically recognised by Ubuntu at restart and by Boinc as it re-runs benchmarks? Yes the card will be recognized by Ubuntu at restart. No, BOINC will not recognize the card at restart. The card will not be usable for any distributed computing. Ubuntu has only the default Nouveau drivers installed for basic desktop display. Those drivers are incapable of any distributed computing using either CUDA or OpenCL. You will need to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers to get CUDA and OpenCL support for the card so that BOINC can use it. I suggest using the graphics-drivers ppa to obtain the drivers. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa Then you can either add the drivers in via the Terminal or use the picklist of drivers in the Additional Drivers tab of the Software&Updates application. sudo apt install nvidia-driver-410 Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

This is an attempt to display an image file from my google drive. The subject is an apparent "cool 'n quiet" type behavior on the part of JSM's 2990wx motherboard. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dY6EsB3h1CtycWj4-n3at26FDzO0FBoR/view?usp=sharing If you click on the above, in theory it should display. Not sure what you are trying to prove or show. Are you concerned what the graph shows? That is similar to what mine shows. What do you expect to see or what shape of the graph do you expect to see? Jsm thought it showed that "cool 'n quiet" was active. And it doesn't look like the "top" that I see on my other boxes. Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

This is an attempt to display an image file from my google drive. That Windows CPU count looks very messy... Just for the sake of aesthetics, can the CPUs be numbered sequentially down the columns rather than scattered across the rows?... Regardless, that's an impressive number of threads :-) Happy fast crunchin', Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |
