Ah, yes, the only idiosyncrasy I had the new system do was that it couldn't find the NAS in Network. But that's due to Windows Features having set SMB 1.0 Sharing support off by default. Turn that on and the NAS will pop right up.

If you have SMB 1.0 on anything just be damn sure your firewall is up to the task. SMB 1.0 is the most common method ransomware gets into a local network and infests everything.

While the advice is sound, it's also something of a scare tactic as most ransomware infections require a user clicks an infected link to download the payload.

Please note that file sharing over SMB is normally used only on local networks, and the SMB ports are typically blocked from the Internet by a firewall. However, if an attacker has access to a vulnerable endpoint running SMB, the ability to run arbitrary code in kernel context from a remote location is a serious compromise.

Which is what I am planning on doing, install Win10 on my older system as well.

And additionally, my Zyxel NAS540 should be able to use SMBv2, so perhaps it is something in my network that prevents Win10 from seeing it.

My Win 7 used to "see" my NAS boxes in Network Neighborhood, but no longer does, fo reasons that I'm unaware off ;-) My other Win7 pc's have no issue. Since I can browse the boxes via their IP address I'm not that bothered. The comment in the quoted link, didn't apply to me, since I have the same NAS he's talking about, and the WS setting was ON by default.

I've disabled all of SMB v1/CIFS File Sharing Support and mapped the four separate drives from my NAS into Windows as Network Drives. I can also fill in \\NAS540 as address into File Explorer and then for that session only, it'll be available in Network Neighborhood and can be navigated on.

I just watched this video and it seems like it was a good idea to do so. :)

Micro$oft has created a Y3K BUG in its "latest and greatest" operating system. Well that's what Carry calls it anyway. ;)

This video is somewhat long, over 40 minutes, but it is very important to see and understand what Carry has discovered in this video. Doesn't matter if it's on an AMD or Intel system, it doesn't matter which type of Windows 10 is trying to be installed be it Pro or Home, whatever. We humans do make mistakes and hit wrong keys on a keyboard. I do it all the time which is why I use a spell checker at all times. I see it in posts on this forum all the time. It happens. That is why it is important to watch this video for future reference.

Ok, so it's not REALLY the fault of Micro$oft, true. And it's not REALLY the fault of Gigabyte for allow dates that far into the future. There's no real reason that I can think of for allowing a RTC to be set beyond say 50 years from the current date. I like what one person said about Carey:

Carey is a over hyped hack who likes to toot his own horn. Blaming MS for this is rather disingenuous as I'm sure they never considered having the install check for a date 1000 years in the future.

But still, Micro$oft could have a tiny little check of the date in the RTC and post a warning that the date is set to far in the future.

Hi Mike,

I used to follow him, watching his live streams and such, but not much any more. Most of his videos are 1.5, 2.5, 3, etc hours long and most of that time is him preaching about this , that, and something else. He just does WAY too much preaching. I just happened on this video and was interested and it was less than an hour long. The videos I watch from him now are the informational, how to videos that are less than 2 minutes to no more than 20 minutes long.
