GPU time isn't measured separately. The run time (also known as elapsed time) is the total time the task was active on the machine, and would normally be the longest duration recorded.Anytime that run_time is longer than cpu_time indicates the cpu is overcommitted. A 4 minute deficit over 50 minutes is acceptable in my opinion. That is for CPU processing times, not GPU processing time that was being referred to. In an ideal world, a task designed to run on a GPU would utilise that GPU throughout the whole running time, but would only need support from the CPU for a tiny fraction of that time - and in that ideal situation, recorded CPU time would be 5% or less of the total elapsed time. But because of the nature of the calculations involved in the SETI project, and the programming languages chosen, we are stuck with this high CPU utilisation. If you spot a task run with one of the CUDA apps under Windows, you'll see that CPU time is very low - but elapsed time is much longer, because it's using the GPU inefficiently for the current tasks. One other edge case - it's possible to have applications which are 'multithreaded', and use multiple CPUs on the same task. In that case, the total CPU time - measured across all cores - can approach four or eight times the elapsed time. But we don't have any of those here. |

In general, I'm against recycling these old GPUs, because they are so much less power efficient. Your 'free' gift - however well intended' - can saddle the recipient with a significant and ongoing extra power bill. Of course, for somebody living off-grid with their own solar, wind, or hydro power, that wouldn't be a problem - but in most cases, a modern GPU with higher productivity and lower power usage is a better way to go. |

I'm really liking the data discussion. The guardian published an article about breakthrough listen project. Basically said we haven't found anything yet. It is very quiet except for the noise that we make. Still thinking we should make a separate thread for data discussion, so this thread can be for warning signs and true panics.Second the suggestion about separating the data discussion from this server thread. But before you go, you might like Breakthrough Listen News http://seti.berkeley.edu/listen2019/ both published yesterday. Haven't collected today's Guardian yet. |

Most likely different than other topics in here....but I have an extra "old" but working GPU. Is there any group in SETI that we can "donate" it to? . . "old" as in what brand/series/chipset? Stephen ? |

Hi, I am wondering. Is everyone's processing times slowing down? The reason I am asking is I may have "finally" gotten one of my AMD boxes stable at 3.9Ghz. It was running 3.7Ghz. I remember having average processing times for my cpus of under an hour at the 3.7Ghz. The times have ballooned to slightly over an hour. When I examined the Leaderboard RAC's for the places above me, a few were going down slightly. `1 was the same and 1 was still climbing. So I wonder? If you mean task 7783673928, you need to quote it in full: Exit status 0xC0000005 STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION That's a difficult one to track down, and happens deep down in the relationship between SETI and Windows. They can happen without apparent cause (cosmic rays corrupting memory is one suggestion). If it just happens once in a blue moon, I wouldn't worry about it - provided good tasks are processed in between. If it happens more regularly, checking temperatures and dust bunnies could help: the more frequent it gets, the more likely it is that some component inside your computer is about to fail. |

Simples (for a recent failure anyway) Project - Account - "computers on this account" (view) - the computer you are interested in - error, and there's the list of errors. In your case there is only one computer and only one error, so easier than for some who have hundreds of computers and thousands of errors.... Then select the task you are interested in, press control A to grab the text and paste it into a file. and we get (for the error you have reported): Task 7783673928 Name blc24_2bit_guppi_58340_36216_HIP112191_0023.17796.409.20.29.184.vlar_1 Workunit 3525328048 Created 19 Jun 2019, 12:35:21 UTC Sent 19 Jun 2019, 17:54:49 UTC Report deadline 11 Aug 2019, 22:54:31 UTC Received 20 Jun 2019, 14:05:48 UTC Server state Over Outcome Computation error Client state Compute error Exit status -1073741819 (0xC0000005) STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION Computer ID 7986014 Run time 17 min 38 sec CPU time 16 min 26 sec Validate state Invalid Credit 0.00 Device peak FLOPS 2,043.39 GFLOPS Application version SETI@home v8 Anonymous platform (NVIDIA GPU) Peak working set size 112.71 MB Peak swap size 143.04 MB Peak disk usage 0.03 MB Stderr output <core_client_version>7.14.2</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> (unknown error) - exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)</message> <stderr_txt> Priority of worker thread raised successfully Priority of process adjusted successfully, below normal priority class used OpenCL platform detected: NVIDIA Corporation BOINC assigns device 1 Info: BOINC provided OpenCL device ID used Build features: SETI8 Non-graphics OpenCL USE_OPENCL_NV OCL_ZERO_COPY SIGNALS_ON_GPU OCL_CHIRP3 FFTW USE_SSE3 x86 CPUID: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1650 v2 @ 3.50GHz Cache: L1=64K L2=256K CPU features: FPU TSC PAE CMPXCHG8B APIC SYSENTER MTRR CMOV/CCMP MMX FXSAVE/FXRSTOR SSE SSE2 HT SSE3 SSSE3 SSE4.1 SSE4.2 AVX OpenCL-kernels filename : MultiBeam_Kernels_r3584.cl ar=0.011495 NumCfft=115261 NumGauss=0 NumPulse=45899238272 NumTriplet=58870371488 Currently allocated 201 MB for GPU buffers In v_BaseLineSmooth: NumDataPoints=1048576, BoxCarLength=8192, NumPointsInChunk=32768 Windows optimized setiathome_v8 application Based on Intel, Core 2-optimized v8-nographics V5.13 by Alex Kan SSE3xj Win32 Build 3584 , Ported by : Raistmer, JDWhale SETI8 update by Raistmer OpenCL version by Raistmer, r3584 Number of OpenCL platforms: 1 OpenCL Platform Name: NVIDIA CUDA Number of devices: 2 Max compute units: 13 Max work group size: 1024 Max clock frequency: 1228Mhz Max memory allocation: 1073741824 Cache type: Read/Write Cache line size: 128 Cache size: 212992 Global memory size: 4294967296 Constant buffer size: 65536 Max number of constant args: 9 Local memory type: Scratchpad Local memory size: 49152 Queue properties: Out-of-Order: Yes Name: GeForce GTX 970 Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Driver version: 417.58 Version: OpenCL 1.2 CUDA Extensions: cl_khr_global_int32_base_atomics cl_khr_global_int32_extended_atomics cl_khr_local_int32_base_atomics cl_khr_local_int32_extended_atomics cl_khr_fp64 cl_khr_byte_addressable_store cl_khr_icd cl_khr_gl_sharing cl_nv_compiler_options cl_nv_device_attribute_query cl_nv_pragma_unroll cl_nv_d3d9_sharing cl_nv_d3d10_sharing cl_khr_d3d10_sharing cl_nv_d3d11_sharing cl_nv_copy_opts cl_nv_create_buffer Max compute units: 13 Max work group size: 1024 Max clock frequency: 1177Mhz Max memory allocation: 1073741824 Cache type: Read/Write Cache line size: 128 Cache size: 212992 Global memory size: 4294967296 Constant buffer size: 65536 Max number of constant args: 9 Local memory type: Scratchpad Local memory size: 49152 Queue properties: Out-of-Order: Yes Name: GeForce GTX 970 Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Driver version: 417.58 Version: OpenCL 1.2 CUDA Extensions: cl_khr_global_int32_base_atomics cl_khr_global_int32_extended_atomics cl_khr_local_int32_base_atomics cl_khr_local_int32_extended_atomics cl_khr_fp64 cl_khr_byte_addressable_store cl_khr_icd cl_khr_gl_sharing cl_nv_compiler_options cl_nv_device_attribute_query cl_nv_pragma_unroll cl_nv_d3d9_sharing cl_nv_d3d10_sharing cl_khr_d3d10_sharing cl_nv_d3d11_sharing cl_nv_copy_opts cl_nv_create_buffer Work Unit Info: ............... It would appear to be associated with Windows having a transient timing issue when granting the lock on the results file. No worries if it happens once in a blue moon, but if you start to see them regulary it could be indicative of so many issues, mostly to do with hardware. The most usual are thermal, but it can be a sluggish disk drive, a poor cable, a damaged motherboard track etc, etc, etc....... I was trying to load my handy dandy link to the boinccmd tool cheatsheet but no go. Found the manpage for boinccmd. Seems you can't set logging flags via the tool. Oh well, nano cc_config.xml works too. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours ![]() ![]() A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

It's the EVGA GeForce GTX 560ti |

It's the EVGA GeForce GTX 560ti If you were lucky enough to get a stable card, the GTX 560Ti was a good performer in it's day, if somewhat power hungry. The biggest issue with those cards was that many were clocked to the ragged edge- they were OK for gaming but would produce nothing but errors when used for compute work. Grant Darwin NT |

Still have it on the shelf. I wouldn't want to foist it on anybody I had respect for. I don't know where else to put this note, feel free to move it. Folks, I’ve been a member since 2003 and have greatly enjoyed participating in the hunt for extraterrestrial signs of life. I went from a very lowly production rate to earning a two-digit ranking over the years I’ve contributed. My highest rank has been 79. That said, the costs to participate at the level I am adds about $115 to my monthly electric bill. I also find that I’m not willing to spend the capital to radically upgrade my three crunchers to the current technology and somewhat lower my electrical footprint. I am also 13 years into my diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and am losing my ability to trouble shoot and maintain my systems to the levels I desire. All my life, I’ve been able to learn something new every day. Now I seem to be losing something I’ve known for years, every day. I’ve been very lucky over the years to have joined SETI@home. I attended a SETI@home Christmas party a couple of years ago and met many of the SETI@home staff and luminaries such as Frank Drake, Dan Werthimer, and Jill Tarter. Of all the folks that have helped me over all these years, I wish to recognize Richard Haselgrove. Richard is among the ‘gods’ of SETI@home with his knowledge and patience in helping me and so many others with our attempts to contribute. I’ve never met any of my fellow participants of SETI@home although it would have been nice to have done so. Live Long and Prosper, John McClelland |

Well, that's incredibly generous of you to single me out amongst all the others who offer their wisdom and expertise on these boards. As it happens, I'm coming up to my personal 20th. SETI anniversary in a couple of weeks, and I'm celebrating by making my own pilgrimage to the mother-lode of SETI next month. After attending the BOINC workshop in Chicago, I'm heading west and should arrive in Berkeley on Wednesday 17 July (Amtrak permitting!). I'm cheating by flying over the, well, flyover states, but greatly looking forward to checking the train-ride from Denver off my bucket list. I'll be staying in the bay area at least until Sunday 21 July - hoping to visit both the SETI lab, and the sights of San Francisco - so if you and/or anybody else are close enough to revisit the spirit of Christmas Parties past, drop a note here and we'll see if Eric or Angela can suggest a venue. |
