Quite some years ago I suggested that a customer mirror all his data, rent a SR-71 Blackbird, load all the mirrored volumes into it and fly his data across the country. This was in response to his anger that it would take years at that time to move all his data across the country via the internet of the time. His sales rep totally lost his cool in the meeting although the customer finally realized the limitations of networks and physics. John |

A big thank you to Eric and Jeff for getting new data for us to work with on a Saturday evening. Once again, beyond the call of duty, guys. Meow! "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

What's the hurry? We've got all the time in the world. Not all of us. I turn 75 years old today. |

Yes, a big thank you to Eric and Jeff. What a pleasant and unexpected surprise tonight. Fully expected to be out of work till Monday. . . Or worse still, until Tuesday, something about President's Day over there? I was dreading a mad scramble for work with the outage breathing down our necks. Stephen Oiks! |

Crunch data mapping about asteriods meantime! Our biggest enemy for space travel for hundreds of years at least. I also had the same problem trying to add Asteroids@home. Thought it was just me. At least I received new SETI work this morning. |

I assume that Jeff worked the magic to get at least some data in place. I would imagine that talk this week will be about shipping drives and the hardware needed to support it. @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) |

It depends if you are looking for a short term, or long term solution. I'm sure the network problems will be resolved at some point. I don't know what you use for drives (SATA/SAS) in your systems there, but if you could get a pair of Small Business NASs, and use the same drives - you would have spares that you could use later on. I just priced 2 x Synology 5-Drive (4TB ea) Raid5 systems on Newegg for $903 CAD each. That's around 2 weeks of files per shipment of the entire Raid, with plenty of time to fill/unload them. Definitely not Enterprise level ... but you are only reading/writing ~6 times per load with verifying data. But do you need that much. If you use 12TB SATA drives in your systems, shipping one at a time could be fine. But have to connect it to a (desktop?) box each time and have the spares for later. Or get by with a pair of 4/6/8TB consumer drives? |

I found a slight bandaid to this problem would be to max out the work days to 10. Helps fill in the gaps. Even then, it only buys a little time to crunch. Thanks for all you guys do! I appreciate your dedication to this project! Cheers! Eric |

Doesn't help at all with the scheduler hard limit of 100 tasks per cpu or gpu. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |
