Re: the RAM shortages.. maybe this has something to do with it?

https://wccftech.com/power-outage-at-samsung-fab-destroyed-over-3-of-global-nand-flash-output-in-march-wont-help-gpu-prices/

Bad news for those feeling the brunt of higher priced NAND Flash products like SSDs, RAM and Graphics cards. A power outage estimated to be for over 30 minutes at the Pyeongtaek fabrication plant in South Korea owned by Samsung has slowed production and damaged tens of thousands of processed wafers. The aforementioned issue happened on March the 9th according to Taiwan based TechNews that cites further South Korean reports.

Bad News For GPU, SSD, RAM and other NAND Based Products
The report claims that the outage damaged 50,000 to 60,000 of wafers with V-NAND flash memory this represents 11% of the total monthly output for Samsung. he report further estimates that the said amount equates to approximately 3.5% of global NAND output, but does not elaborate whether it means wafer output or bit output.

This means that the current high cost of products using NAND memory like Graphics Cards, and RAM will likely not be getting any cheaper anytime soon.

From the same article

Power outages can occasionally occur at various semiconductor plants and at times they harm production wafers. Companies can usually deal with the brunt of the situation and unless manufacturing lines get damaged, major shortages of memory generally don’t happen if problems at fabrication plants do not happen during peak seasons when manufacturers are building up stocks of new products. According to the report, Samsung has a stockpile of NAND chips, which is expected to enable to company to fulfill its short-term shipments commitments. Samsung has also produced numorous Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ Smartphones for channel sales in the coming months and will not require much NAND memory to keep up supply.

Any inflation could be nipped in the bud by Samsung and other NAND flash makers significantly increasing production through this quarter. Samsung will begin expansion of its NAND flash plant in Xi’an, China, which currently outputs 120,000 wafers per month, and is expected to put out 320,000 wafers a month after the expansion.

So, maybe there is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel, if they are going to be ramping up production, at least in one factory, by nearly a factor of 3. All depends on how quickly the expansion will be completed, and if there are any teething pains getting it up and running to full capacity.

Power spike leads Chinese police to 600-machine mining rig
Six Bitcoiners cuffed for electricity heist

Chinese media is reporting the seizure of 600 Bitcoin miners in the northern municipality of Tianjin, on the grounds of electricity theft.

... What better way to cut costs than to bypass billing entirely? That's what Xinhua and other agencies say happened in Tianjin: six people have been arrested because they allegedly bypassed the power meter in a junction box to get free power for their miners.

The Xinhua report said the electricity company noticed a 28 per cent increase in line loss (implying an increased load current) on a circuit, and notified authorities.

Found this article, too.

Samsung, Hynix And Micron Slapped With Class Action Suit Over DRAM Supply Collusion And Price Gouging
Price fixing in the DRAM market is nothing new unfortunately. As recently as January this year, a Chinese regulator accused Samsung other chip manufacturers of artificially increasing prices to pad their margins. Samsung is also no stranger to price fixing, as a $300 million judgement against it and Hynix was handed down in 2006 here in the United States.

A class action lawsuit was filed today in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and alleges that Samsung, Micron and Hynix conspired to artificially limit the supply of DRAM chips in an effort to keep prices high. As a result, device manufacturers that rely on DRAM chips had to pay inflated prices, and those costs were of course passed on to you, the consumer.

Well, hopefully things might just be starting to turn a little bit in our direction, finally. About a month and a half ago (mid March) I was looking at a EVGA 1070Ti AIO 08G-P4-5678-KR, it was priced at $659, and looking today, it was back down to $599. Not even close to what it apparently was in late 2017 ($530 at Newegg, per PCpartspicker website) when it was released, but at least it's going in the right direction. Hopefully the trend will continue, and it effects all the SKU's up and down their line. Maybe the mining thing is actually dying down, again, for a while at least?

That's what I'm thinking, that 1080Ti even has an MIR! $769.99
(with Instant Rebate & after MIR) Whoda thunk a couple 3 months ago that they'd be offering rebates on them? Of course, there's none in stock ATM.

Sorry Al, didn't think you were looking for an more GPUs, otherwise I would have dropped you an email. 6 hours is a long time now a days for a GPU to be hanging around these days, hahaha..

I've been getting Newegg emails advertising various manufacturer Nvidia cards at *unbelievably* actual original MSRP prices. So the drop in Bitcoin/altcoin miners grabbing all gpu cards because of the new ASIC Ethcoin miner hitting the market is getting availability and pricing back to normal.

I don't know whether the rumored 1180 is having that much of an impact on 1080 pricing. The leaked specs don't look all that different from 1080. The only obvious difference is the drop in process technology size from 16nm to 12nm.

Hey Z, oh god no, I am good ATM, but I like to try to keep the finger on the pulse, it's interesting to be a spectator for once, though one never know when the need might arise... ;-) Always good to be aware of the current situation.

It would seem there is light at the end of the tunnel.
GPU sales to crypto miners are expected to fall by about two-thirds in the current quarter, Nvidia said.

'Twould be grand if the whole mining thing turned over to ASICs and left the consumer grade GPUs to gamers and crunchers. But at least the market seems to be returning more to normal now that the miners are not sucking it dry.

That's exactly what's happening. The difficulty has now increased past the point where a consumer gpu is economical to run for its payout. The nail in the coffin was the introduction of the new BitMain ETH0 ASIC miner. I assume that it will sell like hotcakes and make the case for BitMain to design and build other ASIC miners for Monero and the other altcoins that have used consumer gpus to mine.

Good to hear. Hopefully that will mean no further pressure on GPU supply and pricing. And maybe a few bargains on ebay as some of the GPU mining farms are taken offline.
