With the install route you took, I think your seti (boinc) folder is in your 'Home' folder. Ohh,yea the BOINC log window will tell you where it is.

I will look at the Cinnamon change, I know it was possible with Ubuntu, and most of the distro's are just basically a different GUI.
I just don't know what direction to point you at the moment.

Don't have a SATA DVD drive so I figured I would just use the USB Flash drive install from the utility listed in the thread. I have a 2 GB USB Flash drive that has my original Win10 ISO on it and was going to just reuse it. Yes, I was wondering what I was going to use for system monitoring since I won't have SIV at my disposal as usual. I will be certain to grab those utilities that you listed.

I ran Ubuntu Linux and CPU BOINC for about 6 months in the transition from OS/2 Warp/eComStation and Windows 7 about 6 years ago. Never ran BOINC and GPU apps though. Will be interesting.

Thanks for the quick reply, but nope, Home folder has Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Public, Templates and Videos. Didn't see BOINC anywhere under those. Bud did find the boinc-client in the right location, just can't get deep enough into it to extract the files. The dance is just beginning, and she's already stepping on my toes... :-/

Getting late, I think I am going to head home, been at this for about 5 hours, that's enough for one night. I think I might just start it doing some CPU tasks, I don't think Petri's program is going to step all over those once it is installed and running, so might as well having it do something till I get back tomorrow. Might post a pic of it, it looks much more respectable now, and no squeeze clamp, even. High class stuff!

*edit* do you know if the Cinnamon version is more 'windows like' than KDE? If so, any guesses as how to switch it, if it is even possible, without muffing everything I just did up?

I believe that Cinnamon desktop GUI is most Windows-like and why it is usually recommended for transition Windows users. The Mint-Cinnamon 18.2 ISO is what I downloaded. We shall see in a couple of days I guess. I will be reading your comments and posts faithfully, Al. Good Luck!

As Al found, install Mint 18.2 Cinnamon .... It is very windows like.

You will pull your hair out with Linux ... What, what, I need to tweak something! ... LOL

Add 'System Monitor' to the list, it's installed, just start it ... I recommend ticking off 'priority' for columns to display.

Hey Al, I found this:
I've often installed multiple desktop environments simultaneously and there are no issues whatsoever. Each desktop environment keeps its own settings in its own folder within home. Switching between KDE and Cinnamon (or LMDE, XFCE, etc.) is fairly trivial in my opinion. Simply open a terminal and enter:

CODE: SELECT ALL
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

When it's finished installing, log out and then choose 'Cinnamon' as your session. Viola. Setup Cinnamon as you prefer (taskbar locations, desktop icons, themes, etc.) and it will remain that way even if you switch back and forth between Cinnamon and KDE.
Ohh that just sounds WAY to easy :)

I wonder if that works in Ubuntu :D

EDIT: You may want to follow these instructions too, if you want to permanently change to Cinnamon. how-to-change-mint-kde-to-cinnamon-edition

Message 1878690 - Posted: 17 Jul 2017, 5:17:49 UTC - in response to Message 1878686.

I'll give it a shot tomorrow morning, but I thought while I was waiting for Cinnamon to DL I would start up BOINC and grab some tasks for it to run. It comes up, but doesn't connect, red dot in the icon in the tray, says Disconnected at the bottom of the client. Let it sit for 5 mins, never changed. Worst case, I will take the 1.6 Cinnamon file on a USB stick home, and create another bootable installable one with it, so if everything goes you-know-whats up, then I can at least start over with the right version. It wasn't much of a biggie to install it the first time, and will go quicker now that I have done it once I would think. Well, we'll see what the morning brings. Thanks for your help and suggestions!

Thanks for the reminder Stephen. Shouldn't be a problem as I have four spare 970s sitting on the shelf gathering dust. Probably will only install 2 because of PCIe spacing considerations. One of the reasons why I went with the new 1060 shorty card other than the power consumption advantage. I just have to decide to reuse an old case that doesn't fit the AIO without a kludge solution ... or buy another new case that fits the AIO properly.

. . Hi Keith,

. . I cannot help with the case solution ... that is a matter of best fit versus least cost :)

. . But I an assure you the 970s should really fire up with the Special Sauce ...

. . I think I have already posted the runtimes I am getting with my 970s :) (with -bs off of course :), that is in the thread Linux CUDA Special app with low CPU use )

Ok, so there it sits, but no icons, no BOINC in any menu that I could find, so I don't know how to start it to configure it, and move on down your list. Am I missing something? (obviously) lol
Me and Linux, back at the dance again, but this time. I'd like to lead... Grr

. . I think I have already posted the folder the repo version installs to, but in case you missed it look in /var/lib/boinc-client for 90% of the files and /etc/boinc-client for the boot config and associated files.

Pulled the trigger on a new case that should work fine with the AIO. Don't feel too guilty about spending $50.

With a good air flow it keeps the hole system cool.

My Corsair 600T in conjunction with the Noctua D15 does a pretty nice job here with my Ryzen 1800X.

CPU full load at 51°C
Mobo at 31°C.
GPU R9 380 full load at 55°C.
Ambient temp 27°C atm.

Very True, proper airflow makes a big difference, and a bit of playing to get it right.

CPU AIO 280mm @ 53C ... max 59
3x 1080 EVGA 6188 @ 43-49C
4x 140mm (one is x38mm) filling the case
2x Hybrids removing air

Board is @ 52C though I'm dumping the AIO and one Hybrid into the case.

I'm happy. And all air entering the case has super fine filters, so it's clean! Even in this dusty old 1907 house.

Remind me once again ... which BOINC is available from where and which is more desirable and easy to work with? The ones in the Linux distro repositories or the Linux BOINC installation from the BOINC download server? If I remember the details in the thread, the direct sourced BOINC installs into the Home folder and the ones from the repositories get scattered into two different folders.

The direct sourced BOINC has ownership already set to the Home profile and the repository ones have to have ownership changed. Correct?

I'm using the repository version on all three of my Linux boxes (all running the same version of Mint). The only thing I have to remember is to make sure I set the execute permission if I load a new application. No issues with scattering, the installation is in the var/lib folder rather than the user home set of folders. There are advantages and disadvantages with both locations.

Those are great temps Brent. I think you are just running stock clocks on the 1800X. I was running from 58° - 62° C. on the overclocked 1700X but I'm up to worst-case 64° - 65° C. now since I added the 1060 ACX cooler card which dumps into the case. Using a 280mm AIO myself. Three ML-140 fans exhausting the case and two NF-A14 IPPC2000 fans pushing air thru the radiator. The 1070s are reference design exhausting.

I looked at the BOINC installer and see that is relatively old at 7.2.42. I think I remember seeing that the distro version is 7.6.31. The notes on the Linux BOINC download page were good reading. Even they suggest getting a repository version as it has many advantages over the local sourced BOINC installer. Looks like that is the way to go. Just wanted to make sure I understood the advantages/disadvantages.
