Mine has to be Alien.I think it's a classic and is better than most modern horror, sci fi films as now they tend to be all effects and not very good storylines.

Agreed, but all films directed by Ridley Scott around that time are 'more than average'.
E.g. Blade Runner, Black Rain...

My all time favourite is clearly "Ghost in the shell". If you like anime you'll have to see this one!!!

Gosh. I love Alien and can watch the series again and again.

One of the things I find about some sci-fi is that at the time it comes out it is great but because the focus is on showing technology as that cultural moment believes it will be in the future it tends to fail when some time has past.

Alien focusses its visuals on the 'industrial' as well as the 'flesh' which makes us feel our mortality darkly but has no real boundaries on which to pin a sense of age or time.

In fact I quite like most 'organic' sci-fi.

I actually like Lexx.

For horrors I quite liked Deathwatch (2002) about the WW1 soldiers lost in the trenches.

For animated I loved the movie Kaena (The Prophecy) which is not technically a brilliant animation but was a nice story.

I liked Lexx, but the "organic" show I admired most was Farscape. This is the first series I'd ever seen that very obviously tried really hard to break the Star Trek "they look like us, they act like us" mold in their treatment of aliens. Of course they don't always succeed in this measure, but still the efforts were quite novel.

On topic: If you forced me to pick just one movie to be favorite, it'd probably be Highlander.

http://www.farscape.com

There was quite a nice Kate Bush song floating around the internet overlayed on some farscape video clips some time ago.

Farscape is quite an emotional sci-fi in some ways. I fell in love with the Chiana character.

I'm not sure if I have a 'favorite' movie of all time but I do love the movie DragonSlayer. Probably cuz thats the most bitchin dragon you'll ever see. Much better than the girlie-dragon from Dragon Heart, and much more realistic than that computer animated crap in Reign of Fire.

Hopefully when The Hobbit is made (I think it'll be by Universal) they make something that looks as good for the dragon Smaug.

"The Day The Earth Stood Still"

It was the first movie that dealt with an extraterrestial visitor in an intelligent way rather than in a "creature feature" manner.

Very good choice.

Thinking about it, my favorite movie would definitely be Highlander. I've watched it over and over many times. There's just a combination of factors involved. First I love sword fighting scenes. I love the theme of immortality not being quite as much of a gift, especially for those who love, as one might think. I love the cinematography; the camera angles are just beautiful in so many places, like the long shot of Conner's family sword marking Heather's grave while their hut (and metaphorically their brief happy life) burns to ash in the background and he is walking away leaving it all behind, with Queen playing "Who Wants to Live Forever" on the soundtrack. Clancy Brown as the Kurgan is just the Ultimate Bad Guy for me ("Hi, I'm Candy" "Of COURSE you are...").

I might have gone with Blade Runner or The 13th Warrior, but Highlander is still slightly above them for me.

I have most of the films already mentioned above in my collection!

If I really had to pick a 'number one film of all time' it would have to be
'Brief Encounter'...............
