What is the best sub $200 video card for SETI? I was thinking about a overclocked EVGA 960.

I think the best bang for the buck has been decided on the 750ti.

Hey Mark, What would you suggest in the $300 range? Been looking around, but hard to put all the info from posts together.

This is a tough one since the 960s just came out.

The GTX 960 and the GTX 750 Ti Boost with ACX are very close. The 960 just edges out the 750TI boost.

But the 750Ti are definitely more affordable.

If you got extra cash lying around then you can look at the GTX 960SSC with ACX at $209

http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=02G-P4-2966-KR

GTX 960 with 1024 cuda cores vs GTX 750 with 640 cuda cores

If you don't want to spend all of that $200 then go with the GTX 750 Ti Boost or even the GTX 750 FTW with ACX

http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=02G-P4-3757-KR

Hope this helps...

Edit...

For Brent... below $300

EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB FTW ACX 2.0+

http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=04G-P4-3968-KR

This version gets an increase of 2 GB of Ram on the Card which helps when running more than 1 work unit per card.

Above $300

http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=04G-P4-3978-KR

same Ram but pick up an extra 640 Cuda cores

I have not really been shopping them. As my budget for such is nil.

I think that the best card is the most expensive, LOL.
Although it seems that the 980s are getting mixed reviews.
Some complaints have surfaced, and I am not sure they are what they should be.

Since Mark can't help, I could suggest one of the GTX770 cards, since they can be found for about $300 or so, these would be used cards of course.

700s are dogs.
Really, Vic. Oh, f.

When I did my computer build I found the R9 280 3 Gig Card (tahiti) a great bang for the buck

I bought the XFX R9 280 Double D for a little over $200. This card ranks well as far as processing goes and I think it rates really well in SETI Stats Page
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/gpu_list.php
Listed 2nd in Windows

I am not a Super techie guy so I could be schooled on this but I am still tinkering with this card to max out my RAC with it.

The DB being down for a few days did a number on my tweaking but it's all good.

I just wanted to mention this card as I think it rocks for bank for buck wise

Question, do dual slot cards take up the slot above or below the PCI slot? I think it is below.

Best answer is anything other than ADI.

I see more questions than answers regarding other than NV cards on these boards.
I have 22 NV cards running. And I have fewer issues than some.
I load the drivers, and they work. Not much snot with them.

I dunno what to tell ya otherwise.
I just report my experience.

Nv works. AMD seems to suck by many accounts.

I ordered 2 750's, Question, will my downloaded tasks for AMD run on the 750? Or should I run them out first?

what is the size of your PSU?

I like this calculator as it gives you lots of options and will help you figure out if you PSU is big enough or not

thanx, My AMD seems fine but What do I know

The R280 is easy to overclock and runs at a decent temp.

what am I missing? Like I mentioned at around $200 for a 3 gig card it fit the bill

I think what he was referring to with the AMD is that depending on what model you have, you have to know what version of Catalyst you need.

I stopped trying to figure out what version went with what model sometime ago but that is because I found NV cards easier to remember.

That being said, I know many other including TBar use AMD but are far more knowledgeable about compatibility of what drivers go with what model of AMD cards.

If I recall there is even a list somewhere that list all the cards and what version of GPU driver goes with that card.

So for a novice, I could see where not knowing much could lead to frustration regarding what drivers go with what cards.

An there are many threads from AMD users asking why their new or old cards don't start on the first try. The majority are driver version issues. Not to say NV doesn't have the same issue as well but it's easier to narrow down based on the generation of GPU.

But ultimately it is the users decision which way he wishes to go.

My main computer has a whopping 350W, but I have a new, basically unused, 500 W here. that should handle the new card.

Second computer is a slow one, 400W (and I think its flaky) but it does work if you throttle it.

Thinking, I know the 350 is good, put it in the weaker computer (will it work? IDK), 500 in the main one.

I am running a AMD XFX R7 260X. Boinc lists is as a Bonaire gpu. I run it stock with 1 wu at a time (7.03 (opencl_ati5_nocal)). IDK how many are being used, but I know it is in the gpu list regularly.

The R9 280X I have, I just started running 2 WU's at a time with it. And it handles them with ease. MB's are being knocked off in about 7 mins each, 2 at a time. I am going to give it a few days and then up it to 3 at a time to see if the efficiency improves with it. It is not a titanX by any means but I still think it is the best 3 gig card for the price. Like I mentioned it was a tad over $200. I don't know what driver I am using, AMD prompts me to update when a new one is available. Right now it looks as all the calculations are running as opencl_ati5_nocal.

Again not a techie, it runs pretty darn quick from what I can tell. I shut this rig off when I go to bed so it only runs 18 hours a day give or take. I have never been an AMD fan with CPUs but I think GPU's work.

I currently have a R7 240, it likes 2xMB or 1MB + 1AP, or 1 AP + 1 E@H, but 2 AP is to much for it.

I don't think they will, I'd run them out on the old cards if I were you.

As an aside, I have a couple of 750Ti running great guns and to be honest, my research threw up that not only was the number crunching ability of the 750Ti pretty damned good, the power requirements are virtually nothing compared to some other cards.

They're PCIe bus powered, that could well be a biggie for people with smaller PSUs
