OK solved my problem, it appears that you have to have IE 11 before you will get the necessary update.

I never use IE so had not updated from IE 9 on my main or gaming machine, so I installed IE 11 and then went to search for updates, installed them and lo and behold the icon appeared.

So if you are having a problem check you have IE 11 installed and working.

That's an odd way for them to do it. Given there are versions of Windows that ship without IE installed/enabled in the Euro market.

Is it possible to download a later build than 10074 from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-nz/windows/preview-iso Through the registration for the insider program I do not see any option for private users the only option I see is use for your company. I just thought it may save on bandwidth downloading updates would certainly save time

Ah but perhaps the required download was pushed out on its own for those markets.

Or perhaps I was wrong but it worked for me as soon as I installed IE 11 the update appeared, that was on 2 machines.

Windows 10 will be offered as a free upgrade to most Windows 7 and 8 users for one year after its July 29 launch. This has led, inevitably, to a number of questions about what happens to those who want or need to reinstall their operating system.

Microsoft's Gabe Aul has provided some much-needed clarification on this issue. On Twitter he confirmed that once upgraded, Windows 10 users will be able to perform clean installs of the operating system at any time, even after the one-year free period has ended. Users won't be required to install Windows 7 or 8 and then re-upgrade, and they won't need the Windows 7 or 8 product key, with Aul confirming that clean installs from an ISO will be possible.

Hi Phil,
That upgrade is available in the UK, both my rigs have it and the icon, which even if you set the taskbar to hide the thing, it just shows up again after a reboot.

I've reserved copies for my 3 Win7 ult os's but given concerns over win 10 drivers and no install media, I may only install it on a backup copy of Win7 ult not on the OS's I use for crunching.

Also I'm unsure if one can back out of a Win10 upgrade if it creates problems.

I'm going to check it out on the backup OS for a while and wait to see what problems any early adopters have..

I also note that the retail version costs a bomb for the pro or enterprise versions, and I'm dammed if I'm going to pay those prices just to get install media.

I'd rather be sure any OS I install doesn't have crud like forced updates or suchlike, there have already been problems with the NVidia drivers under Win 10

Hi OzzFan,

Any idea 'where' one gets the iso from? As I understand it MS is using windows update to send a single 3gig file as an upgrade, not as an iso.

And the ArsTech article doesn't provide any clarification on that score.

For a view of reality aptly from the sharp observations from The Register tech news:

Windows 10 upgrade ADWARE forces its way on to Windows 7 and 8.1

Microsoft: Here's what you'll cough up for Windows 10 next year

So... Microsoft have now subverted their "patch updates" to now update you with their new Marketing. How soon to also including additions from other "trusted associates" who have bought into the Microsoft program?...

All tricky stuff... And a good reminder of who really owns and runs your computer?

Who owns your data and your work?...

Also I'm unsure if one can back out of a Win10 upgrade if it creates problems.

That was my question.

I would say absolutely as long as you have a legit Windows 7 or 8.1 key. Goes without saying of course that you would lose all of your data unless you back it up as you will have to do a clean install of your chosen operating system

Ecktually it seems like it could be quite a problem for A.N Other as well, how many folks remember or have hardcopy of ALL the keydata of ALL the software they have installed? Like that little old proggie you got when M$ stopped its gadgets in Win7 and you wanted a replacement for the calendar or weather gadget or whatever?

I know its a problem:-/ I have always had software key problems when doing a clean install, not only keys but loadsa updates as well, can take hours
even with a fast cable feed. And I have a hardcopy list of keydata [for most] of the software, but not all, especially stuff I only use now and then:-(

Cheers,

Cheers,

There are tools that can recover the entire product key for Windows 7 out there, I found one, though I can't remember where I got that from, now the key is in a text file, in a usb stick. https://www.bing.com/search?q=recover+the+entire+key+for+Windows+7&pc=MOZI&form=MOZCON

Hi Zoom314,
Windows keys are not a problem, lavelys Everest program records all M$ keys when its run:-)

Its the keys for the odd little programs you only use once in a blue moon:-/ Those tend to get lost over time.

I like ProduKey as it is portable and handy for Techs that have to go and do any work and so forth. The ability to point it to a different windows folder if you've installed another computer's disk in another machine to try to fix it, or to even just point it to a registry hive, etc. It's a pretty handy utility to have.

Also relevant to this thread: Neowin - Here are the features that will no longer work when you upgrade to Windows 10.

Just make sure that you backup all your personal files before you attempt a clean/upgrade install.

Having an updated backup restore image of the previous software is always the best option. ;-)

Cheers.

So if you are having a problem check you have IE 11 installed and working.

Greetings Bernie,

This PC has IE 11 on it. I don't remember if I upgraded my laptop to it or not. I will have to check. Win10 is reserved on my laptop, so if this is essential for the icon, great to know. My other half is having the same problem of the icon not showing up. She does not use IE, she uses Chrome (yuck). ;) I'll have her check her laptop as well.

Thanks for this info, Bernie! :)

Greetings Hal,

Not only that, but Win10 will no longer have IE. They are coming out with an all new browser... :\ I forget the name off hand...
