I see the status page with AP one minute and then they are gone.
I have given up doing them which has caused my RAC to be cut by half.
It is just insane as to why this is going on.
I used to be able to fill a cache with 200 now lucky to get one

That has been going on for weeks, I have a big case of not understanding what is going on.

Perhaps some are "not playing by the rules". I assume that even the SETI@Home server code is crack-able.

Although I am not sure exactly what that achieves other than a larger RAC.

Of course there are people out there who would do it just to prove they can.

That "tape" has already been processed with AstroPulse. So splitters just run through it and no AP's are splitted.

That was my first thought......and if you're running a server farm you would certainly have the knowledge. The reason would be testing, load 'em up quickly, run 'em at full bore for a week, note the results and dump the remainder of the cache........pure speculation, but one 'oneders'........

About a year and a few months ago ...

I had only two GTX780's. My RAC was 114,000. That was because of a two week continuous AP splitting. During such extreme conditions just anyone could have downloaded tons of AP tasks.

Nowadays a host machine even with AP only setting can not get more than mere resends.

Hi,

One also has to bear in mind that the problem doesn't only exist with S@H, any other project that uses BOINC and the same server code has the problem as well,
and that can cause considerable loss of credits to those who don't play fast and loose with the option.

E@H gives 4k4 cr & 1k cr for WU completed... And if some anon user gets a cache of 5000 WU and borks the lot over 2 weeks plus, then those same WU got to another similar user and history repeats itself, until the server picks a user that actually does crunch WU..

This actually impacts on folks who ar'nt getting corporate finances but having to scrimp and save to pay to keep their rigs functioning & crunching.
Dispite whatever others may think of some corporate jokers efforts what they effectively do is sabotage the efforts of others, simply to make their work easier.

I don't believe they deserve anon status, rather that their employers should be fully aware of what the kit they pay for is used for, if they are OK,
with such use there is no problem at their end, if however the employer doesn't like the kit so used, they can put a stop to it, as is their right.

When people have utilised work kit without consent in the past and been found out it reflects badly on DC Projects as well, since they have made such activity very easy.

I have no bleeding idea, if I had, I'd launch a pre-emptive strike on the servers:-)

I don't know if this can be considered exploiting the system, but it's not really a new concept (I've known about it for several years, myself).

So with APs being split presently, I tried snagging as many as I could get. When asking for 2.6M seconds of work, I got 6 consecutive "no work available" replies. I changed the 10-day cache down to 1-day, and the next request resulted in getting a single AP. And so did the second, and third.

I figured now that I've got something, I could go back to 10-day and just let it continue filling, but that resulted in three consecutive "no work available" replies. Dropped back to 1-day, and got three more consecutive replies, each with one AP.

Once I got to a point where BOINC decided my 1-day cache was full, I changed it to two days, to keep the "requesting work for [x] seconds" value fairly low, and again, success.

I don't know what the rough cut-off value is, but I know that it is quite difficult to get work when asking for 2.6M seconds of work on an empty cache, unless there are 10+ tapes being split, but asking for smaller amounts of work seems to end up with a higher success-rate.

I'm in 'Love' with Tape 15my12aa, got 52 AP's across
5 machines... :)

@Cosmic_Ocean, Yes working your Cache level's does have
a effect...

Also I beleave that your 'Net' bandwidth to the Seti Co-location
also has an effect, been watching the last few hours and
there is a preference for my remote machine that are have
better 'Net' band-width to receive a measure of AP's first...

Well that was fun, for the brief time that lasted. I managed to get 14 of them from 15my12aa.

Wonder how many of these server farm anonymous guys got hundreds across dozens of machines... *rolls eyes*

Try not to Beat-up on Server farms, they make significant contribution to the Science of SETI... :) Tho dropping there WU load at the end of there Testing phase is un-sportsmen like...

I remember the Lab's punt back in '99', 'Why would anyone participate, because of the science of it and a little sportsmanship'... :)

I would have to agree. Could I suggest that the work unit numbers to get shifted to own thread. I feel this is no bearing on how the servers perform. Don't get me wrong I am pleased that people are getting these work units

The servers have been performing very well over the past week and a half not more.
