I tried for 30 minutes to figure out how to shut it down and ended up having to google it. Yeah. Right-click the "Start" button. It's there among a lot of other stuff, your 'normal' old Start menu, really. |

W8.1 works OK for me but I find both versions of W8 to be weird with 8.1 a bit less strange |

But what crap for a new user to encounter at that point in the process. If there's a limit, state it - and if the user makes a mistake with the unknown limit, at least try to address the real problem with the error message. Why give any sensible error messages to Windows users? I have never encountered a Windows user who could actually tell me what the error message said, or even vaguely was about. It always goes like User: So I tried to start this program and all I got was an error. Me: What was the error message? User: Error! Me: No, the details after Error: User: I don't know, I just clicked OK. Me: |

I am truly thankful that you folks are willing to do this testing. And so far the Information that I'm getting is going a long way in helping Me decide if I even want their FREE Upgrade. <EDIT>Does it actually work as an Upgrade or does it overwrite everything?</EDIT> |

I am truly thankful that you folks are willing to do this testing. Beta are normally clean install only. I did a clean install & have not tried to see if the installer supports doing an upgrade from an older OS yet. This thread has finally got my attention enough to start acquiring parts for a new computer build. The heart of it will be the latest Intel Extreme CPU, on an ASUS Rampage V Extreme motherboard with a clean install of Windows 10 on a Samsung 850 Pro, 1TB SSD. It will take me a while to gather (pay for) the parts, so when Windows 10 is actually released, I should be close. I'm right behind you Steve, though I may get 4 Asus GTX980 Poseidons or just go with 4 Asus MARS 760 cards with My Asus Rampage IV Extreme, i7 3820 cpu, but I'll stick to a 2.5" WD Scorpio Black 750GB hdd. I still need a case for it though, an Azza GT1 will do. Yeah I'm still building My replacement PC. I'll still need some ram though, 16GB(2x8GB) G.Skill 1866 DDR3 will do. Oops, I forgot, is anyone crunching on Windows 10 yet? The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

I'd be wondering what's in 10 that they want to just give it to people for free, when every other new windows version, the date of release you're field destroying all the old version in the stores just so people can't ask for it or find it at a discount like other old software.. Either what's in it that people won't want it, what's the catch, or is it really that bad that it's free? |

The fact is Microsoft does not make much money from selling Upgrade licenses these days, so giving it away for free isn't harming their revenues. I alluded to this earlier when I said most people buy a new Windows license when they buy a new PC. As to good or bad, that would be incredibly subjective. I'm personally looking forward to my free upgrade to 10, and I'm sure it is going to only be slightly better than my 8.1 I'm currently using. Such is the evolution of OS upgrades. |

I downloaded the free Tech Preview the other day and installed it in a virtual machine. I have to say.. I actually really like it. A lot of you don't really know/remember this about me, but I was like Mark for the longest time.. I think he and I were among the last people to be using win2k..even when win7 was out and available. I moved up to XP only because all of the games I wanted to play required NUMA, and that didn't come along until XP SP2. I only finally moved up to win7 in January 2012. Yeah, I had some gripes about it, but I got used to them, and used to the ease-of-use and functionality that were lost along the way. Then a few months ago, I got brave and tried 8.1 in a VM. I absolutely hated it. A friend of mine swears by 8.1, and I've seen and used it a little more on his machine, and I started finding small details that I do actually like about it in comparison to 7. And the Tech Preview of 10 made me happy, because it feels like 7, but has the cool stuff from 8/8.1 that I like. That being said, I know I will upgrade.. but I won't be jumping on the bandwagon right away.. I'll give it a few months for updates and patches to fix the major issues (there always are some). I have 8.1 running with Virtual Box and two CERN programs. Today I installed all the 31 updates Microsoft sent to me and the CERN programs restarted OK. I am a UNIX and Linux user but since I got 8.1 on a HP PC I am using it and it seems OK. Tullio |

Well a SSD sitting spare (1 used over in the Linux box), and both 32 bit and 64 bit tech preview ISOs downloaded to see how far they've got to go. Will see if I get a chance to get up and running. I usually wait until effective service pack 2 (Win7 and win10 have tech previews, so I'd call usable release SP1 for me). Glad to see I might get some of the 8/8.1 benefits and still be allowed to use a desktop. Not sure how important that'll be after I migrate coding environment to the hololens and flap my arms about to make Cuda programs. (actually I do it that way now, but nothing happens) "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. To me the Windows 10 UI is a big improvement over windows 8.x for desktop usage. I think I'll still go with ClassicShell for the start button. As I don't care for the tile based one they have decided to implement. SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |
