From one second to the next... I tryed monitoring the temperature, if the crash happend, because i was thinking it would be a Themperature Problem but no system was going over 40°C wich is very low... and should be no problem...but in the second seti@home activates the GPU Prozessing the system crashes...! now my problem in the settings are for buttons to enable all 4 were enabled even tho i had no ati gpu... how does boinc figure out wich gpu is pressent in the system, does it try to work with all? ... in my case i have a intel prozessor with GPU options and, my i think is much faster Titanium GPU could it be that both prozessings interuppt eachother...? or is it a Thermal pike wich appears so fast that the Computer goes in Emergency Cooling Hold, wich it not stop to cool, i tested it out and let it run a longer time? iam not realy shure what chauses the Problem but all i figured out so far is that it has do to something with GPU settings, because after i flipped the button in standart Boinc Mode to dissable GPU allways, the constant Crashes vanishes... unfortunaly this prozess of fining the error chaused me to reinstall boinc with lose of all wus i had stored... :( well numbercrunshing is now running on CPU only, what do i have to do to use my full System Potential, with GPU Prozessing, Nvidea driver is the last i updated it yesterday...but it had no effekt on the crashes... if i search for nvidea crashes, there are multiple options i found into surfing the net, seems to happen, since 310 driverversion, alot, but iam not shure if this is realy a driver Problem, because everything other is working fine, no problems working with the pc, no problems playing high graphic games... First thing did you allow Windows to install the drivers for your Nvidia card? I ask this because there are known problems with the Microsoft supplied drivers - reinstall using the drivers from Nvidia, and make sure you do a clean installation. HI, I had the same exact thing start to happen out of the blue at the end of December. I run a AMD FX-8350 (8 Core) (clocked to 4.4 Ghz) 8GB ram, Windows 7, Radeon 5450 HD (1 GPU). I've tried two different motherboards, two different video cards. I upgraded from a Phenom II 3.8 Ghz to the FX (I run it at 4.4 GHz) and everything else works. I dropped the over clock and ran it at 4.0 GHz and the same thing takes place. I load Bonic, and BOOM, screen goes black and the pc restarts. I uninstall, and the PC works fine without it. I've been running Bonic for years and this is my first problem of any kind. I am really baffled, these are the newest drivers from ATI, and I've also used the Windows plane VGA driver, the only difference is the Windows driver restarts my pc at random times with no rhyme or reason. I have even tried to install an older version of Bonic (7.0) and I get the same problem. Windows log file tells that there is a driver problem, but like I said, once I remove Bonic, the problem goes away. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

I know others will say I'm wrong but it might be your FX-8350. First, are you crunching on both the CPU and the GPU? I had the same chip. I found that it would randomly shut off, freeze, restart without any warning. I finally found that if I only did GPU work and not any CPU that it was fairly stable. Now, others will say that's not true but it was for me and several others here. From what I have learn is that although it may be an 8 core, there are actually only 4 floating points that are shared among those 8 cores. So at any time, you have 2 cores fighting for that 1 floating point. That leads to the lock ups, freezes, or stalls. Once you only allow the GPU to crunch and don't stress the CPU with other things too much it's pretty stable. Just something to think about. Zalster |

Unless its a faulty FX-8350 then I would be surprised if it would cause the problems described. For a short time I ran my systems that has an FX-8350 full bore, clocked at 4.4GHz and 8 cores processing while supporting a GTX980. The problem there was the response was very poor, which was cured by freeing up a couple of cores. Subsequently I have let the FX-8350 run at its native speed. HOWEVER I had the same problem when for no good cause an MS update decided to update the GPU drivers, and then the PC became totally unstable, crashing not only when S@H was running, but also at random other times. This was cured by making sure (again) that MS never updates device drivers, and then installing the Nvidia supplied drivers (go to nvidia.com and find the drivers). You have to use "administrator mode", and do a clean installation to get rid of the garbage that MS install - and expect several re-boots during the process. (Aside - BOINC do no processing, so has no interaction with your GPU other than identifying it at start up. It is the SETI@Home application that does the calculation, which if selected, use the GPU) Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

I run two systems with the FX-8350 overclocked to 4.4 GHz with no issues. Currently running two GTX970 GPUs in each system. Previous GPUs were GTX670s. No issues with either system. You need to free two cores to feed the GPUs as Zalster said, the FPU units share a common core so you need to free CPU cores in multiples of two. I run with six cores crunching CPU tasks for SETI only, the GPUs crunch SETI, MilkyWay and Einstein tasks. This configuration keeps the CPU cores utilized at 80-99% utilization with the GPUs utilized at 95-99% utilization, crunching 3 tasks per GPU at a time. This workload leaves the systems still responsive enough to use browsers, anti-virus and financial applications completely responsive at the same time with no issues. I only run Nvidia cards so don't have any suggestions other than to read up on the perpetual problems with ATI cards and their driver issues and to keep the ATI drivers up to date. It's not just your system. I have the same problem on 2 different machines, they can run bonic all day but if I set it to Use GPU then after about 8 seconds the screen goes black and get a message from windows saying the display driver crashed and restarted. Both are Win 7 64, newest video drivers, one has a Radeon 5500 the other a Radeon 6870. They both ran bonic with GPU computing enabled for along time (years ?) then one day one started crashing and shortly after the 2nd computer did. Now for the past 2 or 3 months I have not been able to use the GPU option. Updating the video driver has not made any change. I can use the gpu computing options in other applications (video editing/encoding) with no problems. |

There are options to make the computations less demanding (and reduce lag) Find the corresponding files in your SETI@home directory (<BOINC_Data>\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\) and put the line with options/switches in them: In file with name similar to ap_cmdline_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_ATI.txt put: -cpu_lock -unroll 2 In file with name similar to mb_cmdline_win_x86_SSE_OpenCL_ATi_HD5.txt put: -cpu_lock -period_iterations_num 100 (the options will be in effect for the next restart of GPU apps (e.g. by Snooze GPU)) Also check for any Readme files in ...\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\docs\ Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

I too have been having Thermal/Screen freezing for about 2 months. Before the latest BOINC update, I had random freezes for a couple weeks. The screen would just freeze. No errors. My fans would go high for a few seconds and then slow down and repeat. When I disabled GPU processing, it would run without any issues. SO I updated my video drivers, ALWAYS do a clean install, and before I could really test it out the latest version of BOINC was released. SO like a n00b I installed the latest version. BUT since I updated to the latest BOINC I have had multiple thermal issues a day. I have never had thermal issues with BOINC before this. Heck, I wasn't having any thermal issues before this. AMD FX-9590 8 core 32gb RAM Gigabyte 990x UD5 MoBo eVGA Geforce Nvidia GTX 790Ti Windows7 64-bit I have 6 cores dedicated to SETI and run the GPU as well. When I suspend BOINC the fans run at a constant speed, no thermal events and no screen freezes. I reject your reality and substitute my own boincstats.com |

Very similar set up to one of mine. When using the GPU default settings I had a similar fan issue. Cured it by using one of the board manufacturers applications that allows me to fix the fan speed - since the computers are out of ear-shot I've pinned all my fans at 100%, but could probably run them quite a bit slower. Another thought is that your PSU is struggling - check for dust clogging the heatsink fins and coating everything - its a job I do every few moths, take the PSU out, let it sit for a bit to discharge the capacitors, then open the box (loads of small screws) and, using a soft paint brush remove the mountain of dust, then put it back together - its amazing how much quieter the PSU is after this treatment... Very similar set up to one of mine. Ya, I blow mine out about every 6 months. I'm looking at getting a small air compressor, 15 gallon or less. It's a 1300w Antec HCP Platinum PSU that I've had for about a year My power connectors are CPU contained water cooling unit, GPU requires 2 power connector, 4 Internal SCSI drives, 1 external running on USB 3.0, 4 120mm Fans. I've never checked the PSU to see how hot it is getting because I should only be using maybe 1000w at peak usage. Since it's still under warranty, I won't crack it open, but I will make sure I'm blowing it out really good, especially if it is getting hot. Based upon the information you posted, you're likely only using around 630 watts peak usage. |

Based upon the information you posted, you're likely only using around 630 watts peak usage. aye, that is probably closer. I haven't ever really looked at it. But I have disabled CPU/GPU Processing and playing World of Warcraft for 5 hours doing everything I could to work out the system. I have the settings at maximum. The fans on my PC have been speeding up and slowing down, but no thermal events. BUT then I enabled just the CPU processing and it shutdown in about 5 minutes. Again, these thermal events were not happening before I updated BOINC last week. How would I downgrade to the version before that to test out to see if I still get the same problems? But I have disabled CPU/GPU Processing and playing World of Warcraft for 5 hours doing everything I could to work out the system. I have the settings at maximum. The fans on my PC have been speeding up and slowing down, but no thermal events. Distributed computing will be far more system intensive than any game you can buy on the market today. 5 hours of WoW is likely a break for your system. ;-) BUT then I enabled just the CPU processing and it shutdown in about 5 minutes. I would be curious to know what your temps are running at. If you don't want to crack open your case, try running CoreTemp to give you an idea. Post your temps here or do a Google search to see what your model CPU should be running at. Again, these thermal events were not happening before I updated BOINC last week. How would I downgrade to the version before that to test out to see if I still get the same problems? Since BOINC doesn't actually do any processing, I would be seriously surprised if the version of BOINC has any effect on system temperature. BOINC is simply the traffic cop, downloading/uploading work, managing your local work queue, and telling the science applications to do the processing. However, to truly rule it out, you can always try to find your old version here. Hope that helps. |

The fans on my PC have been speeding up and slowing down, but no thermal events. Thank you very much for the suggestion of CoreTemp. I installed it and ran it for a few minutes with nothing running. All 8 cores ran at about 1406 Hz and the temps stayed at 8c. Then I enabled BOINC and all cores jumped to 4017 Hz and after just a couple minutes temps were at 80c on each core and so I suspended BOINC again. I'll downgrade BOINC and post what happens. BOINC version will not have influence on the temperatures Since the idle temperature is 8°C (do you really have so cool cooling fluid?) but the CPU heats fast when computing - maybe bad contact CPU/heatsink? Or the fluid do not flow fast enough (or air in it)? What is the rate/speed that CPU cools after you "suspended BOINC"? Probably you can find some graphs/reviews on the Internet that show how fast your CPU/heatsink combo heats/cools on load/idle  - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :)  |

Ya, that's what I was thinking was that the heatsink wasn't making good contact so I took it all apart, cleaned it up and put it back together. It took a bit longer, but it still shutdown. I even adjusted SETI from 100% to 75% core usage, again it still shutdown. Took a bit longer but . . . I did downgrade to the version I had installed previous to 22 Jan 15 and I still have thermal events. SO it would appear to be more of a hardware issue than a software issue. Only problem is is it CPU or Cooling . . . I bought both the CPU and the cooler at the same time. I reject your reality and substitute my own boincstats.com |

I would doubt the CPU is malfunctioning, otherwise you'd have all sorts of errors in any program you launch, including booting Windows. 80c seems quite hot to me. Adding in the fact that the 9750 is a 220w TDP processor, and my guess is that this this just isn't supposed to be cooled on air while running full bore. What if you kick the CPU back to 25% (2 CPUs)? Does the thermal shutoff still kick in? How about 50%? WoW uses at most 2 CPU cores and doesn't have a problem, so my guess is you'd be able to run BOINC with 2 cores and be OK. Any more than that and you're going to need liquid cooling. |
