We have had much heated debate, denial, disbelief, trolling, and disfigured trees on the previous thread:

Climate Change, 'Greenhouse' effects: DENIAL (#3)

The heat continues with some ever more stark realization of in-your-face reality as the Politics and political lobbying and Fossil Fuels industry corruptly linger on...

Some recent examples and news and comment:

Nasa animation shows stunning year in the life of carbon emissions

This is what your atmosphere looks like in carbon dioxide (CO2). And it’s not a pretty sight. Nasa provides a stark and stunning view of a year in the life of our planet as humans continue to emit greenhouse gases that warm the planet...

... Since the industrial revolution, CO2 has been rising in the atmosphere due to human activities. Seasonal cycles mean that CO2 rises progressively throughout autumn and winter before peaking in late spring. At that point, a flurry of plant growth in the northern hemisphere — where most land is located — draws CO2 levels down over the summer before the cycle begins again.

That process is made clear in the saw-toothed Keeling Curve, which shows ever rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. This past spring, it topped 400 parts per million for three months, a symbolic milestone.

But while the Keeling Curve is derived from atmospheric CO2 measurements in one location, a new dataset and visual from Nasa makes clear that CO2 isn’t uniformly distributed across the world...

... Long tails of CO2 extend from the US, China and Europe, the world’s three largest emitters. The deep reds and purples show the highest concentrations of emissions coming from these locations as well as the pooling of CO2 in the Arctic throughout the spring.

Emissions from rainforests in central Africa and South America also show up due to forest fires of both natural and human causes. But ultimately, it’s human emissions that have thrown a pretty finely-tuned system out of whack...

Canada pledges $265m to Green Climate Fund

The Canadian government has revealed it will give $265m to a UN fund aimed at helping the world’s poorest countries invest in clean energy technologies and cope with the effects of climate change...

... the offer is significantly lower than other major developed countries, but will be seen as significant given the government’s recent hostility to climate change talks...

What It Would Really Take to Reverse Climate Change

Today’s renewable energy technologies won’t save us. So what will?...

... We felt that with steady improvements to today’s renewable energy technologies, our society could stave off catastrophic climate change. We now know that to be a false hope—but that doesn’t mean the planet is doomed...

... Trying to combat climate change exclusively with today’s renewable energy technologies simply won’t work; we need a fundamentally different approach. So we’re issuing a call to action. There’s hope to avert disaster if our society takes a hard look at the true scale of the problem and uses that reckoning to shape its priorities.

Climate scientists have definitively shown that the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere poses a looming danger. Whether measured in dollars or human suffering, climate change threatens to take a terrible toll...

... the obvious first target is the energy sector, the largest single source of global emissions...

... Our study’s best-case scenario modeled our most optimistic assumptions... Even if every renewable energy technology advanced as quickly as imagined and they were all applied globally, atmospheric CO2 levels wouldn’t just remain above 350 ppm; they would continue to rise exponentially due to continued fossil fuel use. So our best-case scenario, which was based on our most optimistic forecasts for renewable energy, would still result in severe climate change...

...reversing the trend would require both radical technological advances in cheap zero-carbon energy, as well as a method of extracting CO2 from the atmosphere and sequestering the carbon...

... So rather than depend on politicians’ high ideals to drive change, it’s a safer bet to rely on businesses’ self interest: in other words, the bottom line...

... Incremental improvements to existing technologies aren’t enough; we need something truly disruptive to reverse climate change. What, then, is the energy technology that can meet the challenging cost targets? How will we remove CO2 from the air? We don’t have the answers. Those technologies haven’t been invented yet. However, we have a suggestion for how to foster innovation in the energy sector and allow for those breakthrough inventions...

Climate change is not just about science – it’s about the future we want to create

... My hope lies with the engineers. But the right conditions need to be in place for innovation to occur. Progress is hard when other economic drivers inhibit the transformation. Fossil fuels are estimated by the International Energy Agency to receive subsidies of $500bn per year, six times the incentives to develop renewables.

Suppose we fail
to take the action needed to stay below the 2C guardrail. The IPCC working group I predicts that by the end of the century, if measures to mitigate emissions are weak, we could have committed to more than a 4C rise.

No nation would be immune to the impacts of that level of climate change. Our infrastructure was built for the climate system we inherited and is not designed to cope with the climate system we are provoking...

... Science can inform, but it cannot arbitrate, it cannot decide. Science can say that if we burn another half-trillion tons of carbon the atmospheric content of carbon dioxide will go up by another 100 ppm and that will almost certainly lead to a warming of the planet greater than 2C, with major disruption of the climate system and huge risks for the natural world and human wellbeing. But it can’t answer moral questions.

Do we care about the poor? Do we care about future generations? Do we see the environment as part of the economy, or the economy as part of the environment? The whole point about climate change is that, despite having been revealed by science, it is not really about science. It is about what sort of world we want to live in and what kind of future we want to create.

Canada ofcourse is infamous for what must be the dirtiest supply of oil on earth for vastly expansive pollution with their Alberta tar sands... Even so, we are ALL complicit.

We are not doomed yet but something has to give...

Can you deny that?

Martin

Whether or not we are the prime contributor to the observed global weather trend over hyping the threat has numbed the public to a large degree relating to the believability of some of the more radical claims about how bad the day to day weather might get. It's been several years since The Day After Tomorrow and I don't see a noticeable degradation of weather in general.

It's pretty obvious to me that changes will be gradual enough for man and beasts to adapt. Some species will adapt and others won't but that's the way it has always been.

I don't think it matters very much what we 'poor' people argue about amongst ourselves, the billions and billions of Dollars, Deutschmarks, Pounds or whatever being made by a few and the jobs created means this isn't getting better any time soon, no matter what (or which government you have and country your from)
I'm not a complete idiot, but, I'm working on it.
I have an opinion and I'm not afraid to use it

Would you believe this?!

Religion and political affiliation beat boring old reality for the USA!

Americans would rather adapt to extreme weather than curb climate change

A collapse of the ocean conveyor belt would mean drastic cooling in northern climes, rising sea levels, and prolonged drought conditions in some areas.

There it is, global warming causes global cooling.

No it does not...

Unless that is you do not understand what "global" means...

Or unless that is you are pushing for the end-game where all the ocean heat conveyors fail and then we get the "snowball Earth" example where the very strong feedback from ice encroaching from the poles is almost unstoppable...

Meanwhile, nearer term, there is still the fossil fuels corruption and pollution to clean up...

I looks like that every time the earth has warmed up
over the last few thousand years, people did better.
Colder, less people living well. Warmer, more people
living well.

Come on global warming!

Against the continuing painful political procrastination into ineffectual noise:

Time is running out on climate denial

But is it running out fast enough?...

... Greg Craven summarized why by examining the extreme possible outcomes in his viral climate ‘decision grid’ video...

... tackling climate change is becoming a generational issue. 61% of Republicans under the age of 50 support government action to cut carbon pollution. Conservative policymakers in the USA, Australia, and Canada are among the last major holdouts obstructing action to curb climate change, but in the face of physical reality and growing public will, that’s not a sustainable political position.

The longer they hold out and the more carbon pollution we pump into the atmosphere, the greater the risks of dangerous climate consequences. Climate action is inevitable, but the clock is ticking.

New Year's Resolution? Or is a new revolution needed to overcome the old Fossils corruption?
