Message 1599830 - Posted: 11 Nov 2014, 9:41:07 UTC - in response to Message 1599765.

There are 31536000 seconds in a year. That would be 286690 work unit slices. However due to the overlap we generate twice that many or 573380 slices. There are 14 channels or 8027320 possible work units a year. We have assumed 1/2 of them are not recorded due to maintenance projects at the dish. That gives us 4,013,660 possible work units. With the $12M budget that results in a cost per work unit of $2.99 per work unit for telescope time.

We (Seti & Crunchers) are glad someone else is paying that REAL cost. I can just imagine say Nez having to buy work units to process at $2.99/each!

Four million work units a year? We process 66,000 an hour (yearly average), or 1.5 million a day. I think you've forgotten that each 110 second data block is split into 256 frequency sub-bands. That makes Arecibo's recording rate somewhat greater than our combined processing power, and brings the unit cost down to around 1 cent per WU.

I think I did forget that factor.

Message 1599923 - Posted: 11 Nov 2014, 17:42:47 UTC - in response to Message 1599576.

I took the comment about Angela forcing Eric to post an update as being exaggerated for humor.

Of course it was. In fact, it was a follow-on to a comment Eric made some time ago about Angela prodding him to post something. So the comment was a little "inside joke" for people who remembered Eric's comment. And I smiley-faced behind it just to be sure everyone knew it was a "tease."

I was commenting as though I was a long-time friend and "playing."

The warped reception that comment got (and you don't know the half of it) reminded me why I don't post as much in public as I used-to. Walking on eggshells and needing to use my "professional voice" when engaged in my hobby just wears me out. I have a hobby to get away from having to be "professional" and watch everything I say as if on the witness stand.

I think most people got what you meant and I don't see why it would be offensive to assume that Eric is smart enough to know when to listen to his wife.

Ok, so no useful updates, just piles of junk posts. I am fairly sure other projects would like my support or none. One costs me, the other does not. I have in the past stopped assisting due to extended outages or other issues. A week or so is not so bad with updates. But lack of specific info, is less than reasonable. Please post some facts about stats, status and the issues.

Royce,
You talk the talk, now do the walk, I'm pretty fed up with the whinge and whine that prevails from some folks. It does nothing to alter the fact that S@H is running with minimal financial support, and I'm pretty sure that if I'd been trying to sort out servers all day, the last thing on my mind would be trying to appease someone who just moans because HE/SHE aint been kept right up to date an everything.

If you want more info, why just saunter on down to SetiHQ and get stuck in sorting out the problems, that way you'll be right up to date on everything

Cliff

I am a nobody here and my opinion is worth exactly what you are paying for it, but it would be really nice if the posts here were made only by the boys in the lab with perhaps a few “Thank you” postings after the fact. It is a little frustrating to select a “Technical News” thread time after time because the “Last Post” indicates new information has been posted only to find there is no new information from the lab, only postings that really belong in “Number Crunching” or another area. This is not directed at any one poster, just a general observation and request.

Sounds good, apparently you talk for them all.
I have no issue with problems, just the lack of notice and details.
But like your comments, keep up the idiot remarks, rather than state the facts. If the DB issues, mean that stats are not working, but data is sent or resent, then unlike governments that cant tell the truth, a site that needs free support, then honesty it is the most important. So while you respond with socialist style answers, the owners the answer is preferred in a few days. Have a great life.

By the way putz, I have over achieved you how many times and donated finally unlike you, unless your hiding it, then my fault.

Is it really that hard to understand that a request for info, is just not that bad. If it is then this is not what I believed it was. So don't try to spanky pud me.

Socialist? Humm, theres me thinking I was somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun, after having assorted shades of governance leave the armed forces lacking in just about everything from kit to accommodation..

I've pretty much held the opinion that a collar with 5oz of semtex and a lie detector should be fitted to all politicians on election..

And I still have no time for people who want to chuck in the towel when they get in a huff over a lack of info.
Most of my life I've been in places where the info was next to none existant, and the lack of it could very easily kill you.. So lack of info on a computing project in civi street.. BaH Humbug.

Upload Server Problem
Our upload server (bruno) is currently unstable. We are working to fix the problem. UPDATE: uploads are now working although some bruno based services are still off. 5 Nov 2014, 3:24:51 UTC

Stats update to 3rd party websites runs on Bruno. Bruno is down. Engage brain cells, ergo 3rd party stats sites are not updating.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=76068&postid=1598792
1. Bruno started hanging with a "stuck cpu" linux kernel message. I don't know what causes this sort of thing. Moving all the services except uploads to other machines seems to have solved the problem, so far. Next week we're planning to replace Bruno with a Sun X4540 that the Lab was removing from service.

engage brain cells again, oh they know there is a problem and there is a plan in place to fix the issue, but it may take some time. Shoestring project, so 1 week could easily be 1 month.

Now what more do you want? Do you want Eric to call your cell phone with status updates every hour?

Why do you care if some 3rd party website gets stats updates anyway? The question is: Is science being done? The answer is yes. Are you getting credit? The answer is yes. What was your question again?

Totally OUT OF LINE! There is no place for comments like this in a thinking persons forum. As a Veteran and staunch supporter of those who serve and have served for the US AND Britain, I find it disgusting that anyone would disparage that courage and determination the British displayed from 1939 to 1945 in the face of tyranny.

Standing pretty much alone until Pearl Harbor brought the American giant awake.

Don't denigrate others because of your own frustrations.

If you bothered to read the update in technical news you should know:

FACT- Bruno is DEAD(may Asimov rest his soul) and will require 7 days to replace.
FACT- The rest of S@H is functioning.
FACT- Redundant explanations of the obvious takes time away from FIXING THE PROBLEM!

SOLUTION- Deal with the facts and STOP WHINING!
